Patent-ed Mai-.16, 1920.
A pplicati on file'd December 19, 1916. Serial No. 137,754.
To all whom e't may concern."
Be it known that 1, CHARLES O. BURGESS, a citizen of the United States, residing at Monmouth, in the county of Warren and State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Dilators, of which the following is a specification.
My invention consists in a new and useful improvement in dilators, designed more particularly for that type of a speculum, which is to be used with a syringe, for the purpose of dilating a cavity for treatment with a liquid to be applied therein by means of the syringe.
My invention resides in the novel combination of an automatically adjustable blade of the dilator, for securing the proper dilation, with a shield to secure the proper application and discharge of the liquid supplied by the syringe, together with the syringe and drainage conduit for accomplishing same.
The novel feature of the automatic dilation is not limited, however, to the particular use in connection with a syringe, and I desire to claim this novel feature for any and all uses for which a dilator may be adapted.
My invention consists in the details of construction hereinafter pointed out.
In the drawings:
Figure 1 is a perspective view of a device constituting my invention.
Fig. 2 is a longitudinal sectional view through the center of Fig. 1
In the drawings:
The numeral 1 designates a dilator provided with a shield 2, to which is rigidly aflixed a blade 3 with which is hingedly connected a blade 4 by means of the pivot bearings 5, 5. The blade 3 is fixed at an acute angle to the shield 2. The blades 3 and 4 are provided with longitudinally slotted portions 3' and 4 respectively. To the inner edge of the blade 4 adjacent the pivot bearings 5, 5, there is afiixed the lever 6,
corresponding in form to the adjacent half of the shield 2. This lever is adapted to move the blade 4 in the pivot bearings 5, 5, through an arc of substantially 45 degrees. Opening through the center of the shield 2, from the side which is opposite to the blades 3 and 4, is the douche 7 in the form of a hollow truncated cone provided with the conical wall 8, to serve as a handle, and
the conduit 9 passing through the center of the douche 7 and provided with the syringe head 10. At the outer end of the douche 7 there is provided the drainage conduit 11 provided with a nipple 12 for attachment to a waste pipe.
The operation of this dilator douche will be readily understood from the description of its structure. When the blades 3 and 4 are inserted in the cavity to be dilated the lever 6 bearing against the wall surrounding the mouth of the cavity will move the blade 4 away from the blade 3, thus distending the dilator and dilating the cavity to any desired degree until the-lever 6 comes in contact with the shield 2. During this operation the half of the shield 2 adjacent the fixed blade 3 and shield lever 6 form a.
complete shield around the opening of the cavity, thus efiectually securing the dilator inoperative position and preventing any leakage of liquid which is supplied to the cavity by means of the syringe 10 and discharged therefrom by the discharge conduit 11. The slotted portions 3' and 4 permit the liquid to reach the portion ofthe inner surface of the cavity covered by the blades 3 and 4. During the operation of the douche the device may be revolved in the cavity to give thorough treatment to all portions thereof. The operation of the lever 6 and the blade 4 make the dilation of the cavity automatic with the insertion of the dilator into the cavity, as the degree of pressure, exerted upon the lever 6 by the wall surrounding the mouth of the cavity against which the lever 6 contacts in the application of the dilator, determines the degree of dilation of the cavity.
Having described my invention, what I claim is:
1. The combination of a dilator provided with blades adapted to be dilated automatically when the dilator is applied to a cavity; means for introducing liquid into the cavity; means for discharging said liquid from the cavity; and means adapted to surround the mouth of said cavity to prevent an improper discharge of the liquid from the cavity.
2. A dilator having a plurality of blades adapted to be automatically dilated by contact with the outer face of the walls surrounding a cavity upon the insertion of the dilator into the cavity; means for introducing liquid into the cavity; means for dis-' charging said liquid from the cavity; and an occlusive shield to prevent improper discharge of the liquid from the cavit i 3. In a vaginal douche, the com ination of a handle provided, at its center, with a supply pipe and, at one side, with a discharge pipe, an elliptical occlusive shield surrounding said handle adapted to contact with the surface of the body surrounding the vagina; and a dilator provided with two coacting blades, one of which is attached to one side of the elliptical shield, the other of which is pivoted to the first and provided with a shield corresponding in shape to one- 15 half of the shield surrounding the handle.
In testimony whereof I afiix my signature in the presence of two witnesses.
CHARLES O. BURGESS.
