TOY PISTOL.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Ma1z16, 1920.
Application filed August 7, 1919. Serial No. 315,822.
T all 1.0700222, it may concern:
Be it known that I, MORTON B. SULTZER,
a citizen of the United States, residing at.
New York city, in the county of New York and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Toy Pistols, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to a toy pistol designed for the projection of a boomerang device. j r
The object of my invention is to provide a simple toy by whicha boomerang may be automatically projected to describe evolutions in the air similar to those of a boomerang projected manually by those skilled in the handling of weapons of this kind.
The projecting device is herein shown in the form of a pistol, but it will be obvious that this form has simply been arbitrarily selected and that any other embodiment may be used which will effectuate the purpose.
The invention is illustratively exemplified in the accompanying drawing, wherein Figure 1 is a plan view showing the boomerang in position; Fig. 2 is a side elevational view with parts broken away; Fig. 3 is a detail view of the actuating mechanism; and Fig. 4: is a fragmentary view showing the trigger and parts cooperating therewith.
Referring to the drawing in detail, denotes the barrel of the piston and 10 the handle thereof. 7
The barrel is longitudinally slotted at 11 in its upper face and is provided with longitudinal slots 12 in each of itslateral faces.
At the front of the barrel is a block 13 into which is extended one end of a rod 14 the opposite end of which bears in a second block 15 at the rear of the barrel.
Coiled about the rod 14 is an expansion spring 16, and mounted slidably on the rod let in advance of the forward end of the expansion sprin 16 is a sleeve 17 having an upwardly pro ecting arm 18 and a downwardly projecting arm 19. The sleeve also has formed integrally therewith lateral wings 20 which extend through the slots 11 in the side walls of the barrel.
Pivoted near the rear end of the barrel is a trigger 21 having its upper face apertured as at 22 to act as a catch inengaging a notch 23 formed in the lower edge of the depending arm 19.
side of its upper face, is a shelf or support 2st, upon which the boomerang 25 is adapted to rest. The boomerang is triangular in shape, and when in position to be discharged has one of its arms extending across the upper face of the barrel in the path of the arm 18. Attached to the arm 18 is a cushion device 26 which may be in the form of a pad of leather, felt or other suitable material.
The trigger 21 is mounted on a spring plate 27 which imparts a normal upward tendency to the trigger, the latter being movable about a pivot 28.
The operation of the device is simple, and may be briefly described as follows :When the boomerang device has been placed in proper position (Fig. 1) on the shelf 24 the side wings 20 are engaged by two fingers and the sleeve 17 retracted until the notch 23 engages the aperture 22 in the trigger. In this position of the parts the spring 16 is Y., .Assrcrnon T0 HENRY a. nrvornn, on NEW YORK, N. Y.
strongly compressed. T0 dischargethe de- I vice pressure is exerted on the trigger where- I by the sleeve 17 is released from engagement with the trigger enabling the spring 16'to expand and forcibly project the sleeve and the parts carried thereby. As the cushion 26 strikes the arm of the boomerang in its path, such boomerang is thrown into the air and caused to describe the evolutions peculiar thereto.
What I claim is 1. A device of the character described, comprising a casing, a. shelf carried by said casing and adapted to support a boomerang with an arm thereof extending transversely across such casing, and means in the casing for forcibly striking said arm and projecting the boomerang.
A. device of the character described, comprising a barrel having a longitudinal slot therein. a shelf carried by said barrel and adapted to support a boomerang with an arm thereof lying across said slot, and boomerang projecting means movable in the barre]. and having a projection traveling in said slot in position to strike the arm of the boomerang.
3. A device of the character described, comprising a barrel having a slot in its upper face and a slot in each of its lateral faces, a rod extending longitudinally within said barrel, a sleeve slidable on said rod, a coil spring compressible by retraction of said Secured to the barrel 10, preferably at one sleeve, an arm carried by said sleeve and projecting through the slot in the upper face of face of the barrel, and a trigger 'adepted to the barrel, side Wings carried by the sleeve engage and become disengaged from said and projecting through the slots inthe latsleeve;
eral faces of the barrel, a shelf carried by r In testimony whereof I have affixed my I the barrelrand adapted to support a boomsignature. 4 V erang with an arm thereof in the path of the arm prejeeting threugh the slot in the upper MORTON B. SULTZER.
