" EVICE FOR SECURINGEXTRA LEAvEs IN BooKs;
To all whom it may) concern:
hends the provision of a device for securing loose or extra leaves, such as are ordinarily used by ministers or preachers to contain notes on their sermons, in a Bible or bound book. The invention includes a air of buttons or clasps which are detachably connected to the ends of the back of the book cover at the center thereof, to which buttons a string or strand of suitable material is connected, which string or strand is adapted to engage the loose or extra leaves or note sheets and bind their intermediate portions to draw the fold or intermediate portion of the note sheet tightly between the leaves of the book, thereby permitting the note sheet or auxiliary leaves to be turned as leavesiof the book and permitting the reading of notes from both sides of the auxiliary or note leaf as well as reading the printed matter from the pages of thebook which are adj-acentto the note sheet.
Other objects of the invention appear in the following detailed description taken in connection with the accompanying drawing, forming a part of this specification, and in which drawing Figure 1 is a perspective view of a book showing the improved loose sheet holder attached thereto.
Fig. 2 is a longitudinal section through a book showing theloose leaf holder aplied. p Fig. 3 is a section throughone of the buttons ofthe loose leaf holder illustrating its manner of attachment to the back of the book cover.
Referring more particularly to the drawings, A indicates an ordinary book, the cover B of which overlaps the edges of the leaves of the book;
The device for securing the extra leaves in the book comprises a pair of buttons 1 Specification of Letters Patent.
' Application filed February 27, 1919. Serial No. 279,500.
' Patented Man-9, 1920.
and 2 and a cord 3 which is connected to these buttons.
Each of the buttons 1 and 2 comprise a pair of members 4 and 5 which may be made of any suitable material and have their outer surfaces rounded and colored in any suitable manner to conform with the color ofthe back 0 of the cover B of the book. The section 4. of the button is provided with a centrally disposed threaded recess 6 which receives therein the threaded portion of the shank 7 of an inserting member, the head 8 of which is adapted to be forced into a recess 9 formed centrally within the inner surface of the section 5 of the button. The shank 7 extends through an opening 10 formed in the'back G of the cover B of the book and thus connects the section 4 of the button or snap to the back C, preventing accidental disconnection besnapped into the recess 9 to connect the section 5 thereto.
The section 5 of the button is provided with an opening 11 extending. therethrough which opens into an enlarged recess 12 in the inner face of the section 5. The recess 12 receivesone knotted end of the cord 8. This cord 3 may be made of a silken cord, elastic or any desired material, without departing from the spirit of this'invention. The length of the cord may be cut to fit any desired book, and its ends being knotted in the recesses of the section 5 of the buttons 1 and 2, it may be stretched through the book A to bind the loose or auxiliary leaves indicated at 14 in the book A, in such manner as to permit the leaves to be turned as leaves of the book.
tachably fixing loose or auxiliary leaves in.
any type of book. 7
In fixing the loose leaf 14 in place, it is folded or creased, intermediate its ends, so
thatthe fold or crease therein will fit in the crease of the book A when opened and after the leaf 14 has been placed at the desired.
position within the book A, the, cord C is passed thereover in the crease or fold therein. Prior to the passage of the cord over the auxiliary leaf 14 one of the sections 5 of the buttons 1 or 2 has previously been attached to the head 8 of the said button and therefore the cord is connected to the book cover and upon passage of the cord over the auxiliary leaves 14, the section 5' of the other button is connectedto the section 4: thereof through the medium of the head 8, securely binding the loose or auxiliary leaves 14. in place, in such manner as to permit the reading of notes upon each side of each page of the loose leaves and also the reading of the printed matter from the facing sides of the adjacent pages of the book.
Changes in detailsmay be made Without departing from the spirit of this invention, but; a
I claim:
1. A device for securing auxiliary leaves 2. In a device for securing auxiliary leaves 7 in books, the combination with a book cover having an opening in each end thereof, of a pair of buttons each including a book carried section, a shank extending throughthe opening in said book cover and connected to said book carried section for attaching the book carried section to the book cover, a
head upon said shank, and a detachable but-.
ton section adapted for connection with said head,qand a cord connected to said detachable button sections.
