' To all whom it may concern:
' State of Pennsylvania,
Be it known that I, RALPH D. Rose, a citi- 'zen.of the UnitedfStates, and resident of Johnstown, in the county of Cambria and have invented certain new and useful Improvementsin Retainin Devices for Switch-Points, of which the following is a specification.
This invention is a retaining device for switch points, and the object of the invention is to provide simple and efficient means for retaining a switch point at each limit of its movement against accidental displacement, while at the same time permitting the usual manual or other operation of the switch point.
It is a further object of the inventionto dispense with the use of springs, and to employ-in lieu thereof a weight associated with a switch point rod in such a manner as to permit the throw of the switch point from one limit to the other and to retain the switch point at each limit of its movement.
In the drawingsv Figure 1 is a side elevation of the switch point retaining device of the present invention, the casing thereof being in section;
Fig.2 is a plan view of Fig. 1, the cover of the casing being removed; v
Fig. 3 is a cross sectional view on the-line 3-3 of Fig. 1. For housing and protecting the working present invention, there is proa rectangular cast metal box havlng a removable top or cover 2. A suitable opening 3 is provided through one side of the box adj acent the top thereof to accommodate a switch point rod movement through the opening. That end of the rod 4: which is within the casing is provided with a fork or bifurcation 5 straddling an upright lever 6 and plvotally con nected thereto as at 7. The upright lever 6 is fulcrumed intermediate of its ends asat 7 between a pair of bracket arms 8 preferably formed integral with the side of the box or casing 1, at opposite sides of theopening 3. Within the bottom portion of the box there is a substantially horizontal lever 9, fulcrumed intermediate of its ends as at=10 between a pair of upstanding posts or bracket members 11 preferably formed integral with the bottom of the box or casing. A pair of links 12 embracing the lower end of the lever v casing is 4 disposedin a substantiallyhorizontal position and capable of endwise Specification of Letterslatent.
6 and an endof the lever 9 which isadacent the switch point rod 1 4-." A suitable? pivot pin 13 connects the upper, endso'f'the links 12 with the and lower ends of of the lever 9.
' bottom with lever 9, and is of ears 16 disposed at bifurcation so as to lie site sides of the lever 9.
lower end of the lever 6,
a suitable pivotypin 1 1 connects the adjacent and at oppo These ears are pro-" vided with alined openings for alinement with one of a lever 9, and
plurality of openings 17 in the.
a headed pin 18 is passed through the alinedopeningsso as to retain the weight 15 at an adjusted position upon the lever. A
tachahle mea suitable cotter 19, or other de-' us is employed to removably hold the pin 17 in place. .v
In the operation of the device, the box or switch ent drawings nection constitutes placed alongside of the-track, and the switch point rod 4 is connected to the point in any suitable or desired manbeing shown in the pres ction as the particular form of conno part of the present inthe position of theparts as 1 of the drawings, the switch opposite sides of the:
Y si e tl 1 er-a l'92 Application filed July 2, 1919.- seri iNaeos'aea i 15 is provided in its point is at its remote limit, and is retained in this position by reason of the weight 15.
When the switch point is moved toward the casing 1, the the box, there switch point rod 4 moves into by swingmg the toggle connection 612 from the full line position to the dotted line position,
til v the levers allnenient, af
6 and 12 come into vertical ter which the weight 15 falls and comes to rest in its normal position with the'toggle connection at the rlght hand side of the pivots point will be retained in its new held against acci What I claim 1. In a retaining 7 and 14, whereby the switch position and ental displacement.
is: 1 I
device for switch points,
the, combination with a switch point rod, of
a lever mount stantially horizontal fulcrum, an upright lever fulcrumed between its ends and tively connected to to said first named ed between its ends upon a sub operathe switch point rod and lever and a weight ad--.
justably mounted upon said first mentioned lever.
2. In a r taining device for switch points, I the combination with a switch point rod, of
a lever mount ed between its ends upon a sub the weight 15 rising un- I ver fulcrumed' v I ed 'to the switch point rod, a link plvotally stantially horizontal fulcruni, an upright lebetween its endsand connect connecting the levers, and a weight upon the first mentioned lever.
3. In a switch point retaining device, the combination of a casing, a switch'point. rod working through an opening in the casing, an upright lever fulcrurned between its e'nds upon a bracket projecting from thejcasing, a pivotal connection between the upper end of the lever and the switch point rod, a'seca bracket extending mg; a link connection from the side of the casbetween the lower end portion'of the upright lever and one end portion of the second weight carried by mentioned lever, and a the other end portion of thesecond mentioned lever.
In testimony whereof I have hereunto set my hand.
RALPH D. ROSE.
