DEVICE FOR OPERATING GUT-OUT COCKS.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Got. 14, 1913.
Application filed May 31, 1912. Serial No. 700,613.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that 1, ROBERT E. ADREoN, a citizen of the United States, residing in the city of St. Louis and State of Missouri, have invented new and useful Improvements in Devices for Operating CutOut Cocks, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to devices adapted to be operated from the side of the car for opening and closing cut-out cocks of train pipes, and is more particularly in the nature of an improvement on the construction covered in prior Patent No. 755,918 of Nicholas F. Niederlander, dated March 29, 190-1.
In the accompanying drawing, Figure 1 is a plan view of a device for controlling train pipe cut-out cocks from the side of the car, embodying my improvements; Fig. 2 a side elevation thereof; Fig. 3 an end view thereof; Fig. 1 a side elevation of one of the keystems employed with the above construction; Fig. 5 a plan view thereof; Fig. 6 a side elevation of the other key-stem; Fig. 7 a plan view thereof; and Fig. 8 a side elevation of a slightly modified key-stem adapted to be employed where the cut-out cocks are operated independently.
As shown in the drawing, brackets 1 are secured to a portion of the car frame for supporting the cut-out cocks 2 and 3 of the train brake and signal pipes 4: and 5 respec tively and clamping members 6 are placed over the top of the cut-out cocks and secured to the brackets 1 by means of bolts 7. A hanger or key-stem support having depending arms 8 and a lower plate 9 connecting said arms is suspended below the brackets 1 and is secured in position on extended portions of the bolts 7 which are provided with additional nuts 10, so that the hanger may be applied and detached without disturbing the supporting brackets and clamps of the cut-out cocks.
The key-stem 11 for operating one of the cut out cocks, preferably the train brake pipe cock 2, is provided with a squared socket for engaging the squared end of the cock key and, as shown in Fig. 4, has an integral double arm lever 12 the opposite arms of which are adapted to be connected to operating rods extending to opposite sides of the car. The key-stem 13 has a similar socket for engaging the cock key of the train signal cut-out cock 3 and preferably integral therewith is a single arm lever 14. The lever 1 1 is detachably connected to the lever 12 by means of a link 15 and a detachable pin 16, so that the signal out-out cock may be operated with the brake cut-out cook or by disconnecting the levers, the train brake cut-out cock may be operated alone. The hanger plate 9 is provided with openings adapted to serve as guides for the respective projecting ends 17 and 18 of the key-stems 11 and 13. Then the hanger, with the key stems 11 and 13 mounted therein, is secured in position by means of the nuts 10, it will be seen that the levers 12 and 14 rest on the top of the plate 9.
By making the levers integral with the key stems, lost motion between the key stems and the levers is prevented and by supporting the levers on the hanger plate, danger of levers dropping off is obviated.
if it is desired to operate each cut-out cock independently by separate rods from the sides of the car, a key-stem 19 such as illustrated in Fig. 8 may be substituted for the key-stem 13. This key-stem is provided with a double arm lever 20 similar to the lever 12 but located at an intermediate point on the stem so as to clear the pull rod levers attached to the lever 12.
Having now described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is:
1. A device for operating train pipe cutout cocks comprising a key-stem for operating the cock key, a lever mounted on said key-stem, and a hanger suspended beneath the car frame having side arms and a horizontal connecting plate upon which said lever is adapted to rest.
2. A device for operating train pipe cutout cocks comprising a key-stem for operating the cock key,,a lever integral with said key-stem, and a hanger provided With a horizontal member upon the upper surface of which said lever is supported.
3. A device for operating train pipe cutout cocks comprising a bracket secured to the car frame, a clamp fastened to the bracket for holding the cock casing, a keystem for operating the train pipe cut-out cook, a hanger for supporting said key-stem,
and bolts for securing said clamp to said 10 bracket, said bolts having extensions for securing said hanger in position.
In testimony whereof I have hereunto set my hand.
