To all whom it may concern Be it known that 1, PAUL J. KiivnNnY, a citizen oi the United States, and a resident of Bloomington, in the county of McLean and State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Angle Cocks and Actuating Means Thereior; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the characters of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.
This invention relates to improvements in angle cooks for use on railroad trains that are located at the ends 01": the cars and in the train lines (steam or air) for conveying the material from one car to another car coupled thereto through the usual flexible hose and angle cock connections, and the invention refers more specifically to improvements in means for operating angle cocks themselves from the sides of the cars, so that it is unnecessary for the trainmen to enter between the cars to operate the angle cock to cut oil the material passing th rethrough, and refers also to a novel form of angle cock to adapt it to such operating iechanism.
The purpose of the invention is to provide a construction of this character which renders it unnecessary for the trainmen to go between the cars to operate the angle cock when coupling and uncoupling cars and when adjusting the air or steam connections between the cars. In respect or" this phase or" the invention it embraces novel actuating means, as bars, rods, or the like, which are connected at their inner ends to the moving part of the angle cock and extend at their outer ends to about the planes of the sides of the car, each car having two of said operating mechanisms or handles extending in opposite directions from the angle cock to the opposite sides of the car.
Another object of the invention is to provide a novel actuating deviee, as the hand piece or bar, and a novel means oi connecting it to the moving part of the angle cock, so that the device as a whole may be adapted to standard cars, while avoiding clashing of the operating devices with other equipments at the end of the car, such as the coupler heads, draw bars, and the like.
Another object of the invention is to provide, in combination with such means for operating the angle cook, a novel form of the structure or" the angle cock which avoids the presence of any projection of the operative part of the angle cock above the plane of the general structure such as is liable to interfere with the passage of a trainman between coupled cars, or such as may result in the operative part of the cock being opened or closed by the foot of the trainman while passing between the cars.
The invention consists in the combination and arrangement of the parts shown in the drawings and described in the specification, and as pointed out in the appended claims.

It will be understood that my improvements are adapted to all types or" cars, and the cars herein shown are diagrammatically illustrated to show the manner of the application of the invention thereto without restriction, however, to the particular manner in which the operative parts of my improvements may be applied to any given car.
As shown in said drawings, 10, 10 designate the adjacent ends of two cars; 11, 11 the coupling knuckles, and 12, 12 the draw bars connected to the frame structure and the end sills in any known or preferred manner. In the following description it will be asvsumed that my invention is adapted to the angle cocks that are connected in the air line for the air-b *ake system of the t-ain and will be so described, without limitation,
'however, to the particular material which the angle cocks are designed to control.
14, 14C designate the angle cocks at the adjacent ends of two coupled cars. Each of said angle cocks is connected at its inner end to the train line pipe 15 by the nipple 16 in the usual manner, whereby said angle cocks are rigidly conn cted to the train pipes. At the other or inner ends of the angle cocks are nipples 17 to which are connected the flexible hose sections 18, which latter drop below the coupler heads and are con nected at their free ends by the usual hose coupling not herein shown.
The construction of the valve is shown most clearly in Figs. 3 and 4. The valve casing 20 comprises a chambered casting of 7 suitable shape which is formed with a through chamber 21 in free communication the horizontal plane of the valve so that,"

Referring'now to the operating'mean's for rocking the valve piece of the angle cook, the same are made as follows:
40, 41 designate operatingbars which are loosely connected at their inner ends to the stems 28 of the valve piece and are directed outwardly toward the sides of the car and may be there supported by any suitable form of hanger 42 attached to the car structure, the ends-0f the bars terminating in hand piece 43. It willbe noted by reference tov Figs. 1 and 2 of the drawings that the angle cock of each car is located at one side of the draw bar and above the plane of the lower side of the bar, theangle cock oit one car being on one side of the car craw bar and'the angle cock of the adjacent car being at the other side of its draw bar, as usual, with the flexible hose drooping obliquely across and beneath the coupling knuckles. For this reason, one of the operating bars, the operating bar 40, extends from its associated angle cock beneath the adjacent draw bar'to its side'hook 42. It thereby becomes desirable, in order'to bring the outer end of the operating bar'40 to:a convenient suspending positionatthe hook 42 to curve said bar 40 at 44, where-it passes beneath the draw'barand thence incline it upwardly to its suspending'hook; It is also desirable that the other, or shorter, operating bar be inclined upwardly from its point pending hook. In order to accommodate "said operating bars to the conditions dethe valve controlled thereby by joints which permit the operating barsto be rocked to open and close the angle cocks regardless of the angle and curvature of the operating bars. With this construction and arrangement, it will be observed that the outer ends of the operating bars 40 and 41 may be elevated at anysuitable angle for suspending connection to the car body frame adjacent to the sides of the car and that the knuckle or universal joints formed by the parts 46, 48, and 49 will transmit rocking movement to the valve piece, regardless of the angles of the operating bars.
An advantage of the construction de-' scribed is that each angle cock at the end of the car is provided with two operating rods that extend adjacent to the sides of the car so as to be accessible to a trainman standing at the sides of the car and thereby avoids the necessity of the trainman entering between the car to open and close the angle cock. It will be further noted that the two angle cocks of adjacent coupled cars may be operated from either side of the car by a single trainman, thus avoiding the necessity of the trainman passing therebetween or over the coupling connections.
It has been found in practice that where the operating handle or device of the angle cock is located at the upper side of the angle cock it not only exposes the trainman to danger in reaching the operating device for opening and closing the angle cook, but also presents an upward projection from the body thereof, which is liable to be struck by the foot of a trainman passing between the cars and over the coupling or draw heads. This may result in either of two adverse conditions; first, the trainman may catch the bottom of his trousers on the actuating device so that he may trip and fall under the car, thus endangering his life, or contact of his foot with the actuating device may accidentally open or close the same inadvertently. If the angle cock be connected to an air train line, the condition of the brakes may be maladjusted, with the attendant difficulty of locating the pointin the train where such maladjustment occurs, thereby entailing trouble and delay in starting the train.
It will be understood that the structural details of the illustrative embodiment of the invention may be varied within the scope of the claims hereto appended and that the invention is not limited to the structure shown except as to claims wherein the structure is specifically set forth and as imposed by the prior art.
I claim as my invention:
1. An angle cock and actuating means therefor for use on railway cars, comprising in combination with an angle cock, embracing a casing and a closure member provided with horizontal, oppositely disposed stems, actuating devices connected at their inner ends to said closure member stems and extending outwardly therefrom, and means at the sides of the car to support said actuating devices.
2. An angle cock and actuating means therefor for use on railway cars, comprising,
in combination with an angle cock at one side and above the plane of the lowest part of the car draw bar, said angle cock having a horizontal rocking closure member provided below the plane of the top of the angle cock with oppositely extending stems, actuating bars connected at their inner ends to said closure member stemsand extending outwardly therefrom to the car side, and means to support the outer ends of said bars, one of said bars being curved between its ends to pass the draw bar.
3. An angle cock and actuating means therefor for use on railway cars, comprising, in combination with an angle cock, embracing a casing and a closure member provided with horizontal, oppositely disposed stems, actuating bars connected at their inner ends to said stems by knuckle joints, and means at the sides of the car ends to support the outer ends of said bars.
4. An angle cock and actuating means therefor for use on railway cars, comprising, in combination with an angle cock, embracing a casing and a closure member provided with horizontal, oppositely disposed stems, actuating bars for said closure member, having means to support the outer ends thereof at the sides of the car end, and knuckled fittings at the inner ends of said bars having non-rotative connection to said bars and to said stems.
5. An angle cock and actuating means 'therefor for use on railway cars, compris ing, in combination with an angle cock, embracing a casing having means to connect it to a train pipe and to a hose coupling and provided with a transverse, horizontal ported member, a ported rocking closure in said ported member, and having stems extending oppositely therefrom, actuating bars connected at their inner ends to said valve stems by joints permitting the closure to be actuated by the actuating bars when occupying different angles with reference to the axis of said closure, means at the car end sides for supporting the outer ends of said bars, and stop devices on the stems and said casing to limit the rocking movement of the closure.
6. An angle cock and actuating means therefor for use on railway cars, comprising, in combination with an angle cock, embracing a casing and a closure member provided with horizontal, oppositely disposed stems, actuating devices connected at their inner ends to said closure member stems and extending outwardly therefrom, means at the sides of the car end to support said actuating devices, yoke members connected to and rotative with said stems, and stops on the casing adapted to limit angular movement of the arms of said yoke,
