Description
l'UNITED STATES PATENT Grrrcn.
EDWARD H. OUTLER, OF CANTON, OHIO.
IMPROVEMENT IN STEAM-ENGINES.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 133,305, dated November 26, 1872.
' To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, EDWARD H. CUTLER, of Canton, in the county of Stark and State of Ohio, have. invented certain new and useful Improvements in Steam-Engine Frames and Guides; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawing and to the letters of reference marked thereon which form a part of this specitication. v
My invention consists of an improved form of guide for steam-engines.
By this invention the method heretofore prevailing of casting the guide in one piece with the frame is done away with, and the device of a guide cast separately with brackets with which to attach it to the frame is substituted. My object in making my guides in this form is evident. By the method now in use of casting the guides and frame in one piece, if the guides become damaged or Worn out, the whole frame has to be thrown away, necessitating a loss of money and perhaps of time, but by my method, if they become broken or in any Way rendered unt for use, they may be thrown aside and new ones substituted in a short time and economical manner.
yThe advantages gained by using a guide of this construction are manifest-time and money are both saved, as also a considerable increase of strength and durability. I .also claim some advantages for the style of frame shown in the drawing. It is cheap, simple, and is possessed of great strength and durability, and I prefer to use it in connection with my guides; but, of course, do not confine the use of the guides to any particular form of frame, but use them upon any and all frames Where guides of this pattern are required. y
Figure l is a side elevation of the guide and frame. Fig. 2 is a section ofthe guide andan end view of the frame.
Arepresents the frame of the engine. B is the guide constructed in the usual manner with V-shaped ways and having the brackets a and a. The guide B is attached to the frame by means of the bolts b and b passing into the frame.
What I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is- 1. The guides B constructed with the brackets a and af, substantially as and for the pur pose specified.
2. The combination of the guides B, constructed as described, with the frameA of the engine, as and for the purpose described.
