BED- -GUARD.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, EDMUND J. ScHMIDT, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of the city of Chicago, county of Cook, and State of Illinois, have invented certain. new and useful Improvements in specification. p
My invention relates to improvements in bed guards especially adapted to prevent children or illipersons from falling out. of the same, and has for its object the provision of an improved constructionof tl1is-character which is simple and efiicient in use, may be readily attached to any bed, andmay be readily shifted from position of use into position of .nonuse. p
Other objects will appear hereinafter.
The invention consists in the combinations and arrangements of parts hereinafter described and claimed. g
The invention will be best understoodby reference to the accompanying drawing forming a part of this specification, and in which,
Figure 1, is an end view of the bed equipped with guards, embodying the in- Fig. 2, a section taken on line 22 of Fig. 1, and
Fig. 3, a section taken on line 33 of Fig. 1- V I The preferred form of construction, as
illustrated in thedrawings, comprises guard.
members 4 in theform of longitudinal slats or strips adapted to be secured along the sides of a bed above. the normal supporting surface thereof, asindi'cated. Each of the guard members 4 is surrounded at each end 7 thereof by a strap or band 4, which is preferably longitudinally adjustable thereon;
Each of the bands 4 is providedat the bottom with a downwardly extending eyelet 5 pivotally connecting with another eyelet 6,
which is rigidlyconnected with one link of a flexible clamping chain 7 adapted to surround and clamp upon the corresponding 7 carries a perforated ear 8 connected with of an adjusting bolt 10, the ear 9 being equipped with a hook 11 adapted to engage the links of chain 7 to facilitate the adjustment and clamping of the chain around the bed posts of various sizes and shapes, as will be readily understood.
At its upper end,
each of the straps 4: is provided with an Specification of Letters Patent.
of which the following isa-- top and downwardly perforated ear 9 by means I Patented Mani), 1920. Application filed July a, 1918. ;Seria1No.243,738.
upwardly extending eyelet 12 pivotally engaging an eyelet'13 swiveled toea flexible strap 14: adapted to embrace the correspond:
means of a suitable buckle 14. Aguard 15 of leather or'other suitable material is arranged over the head of the stud ,of eyelet 13 to prevent marring of the bed I post.
By this that one or more of the guard members may be readily attached to beds of' different lengths or having bed sizes: or shapes; and that when not in use the guard members may be readily swung posts of different.
ing bed post and being secured thereto by V arrangement, it will be observed downwardly into the positions indicated in I dotted "lines in Fig. 1, where they will be out of the way but instantly available for re-use.
1 While I have illustrated and described t 1e rying my invention into effect, this is capable of variation and modification without departing from the spirit of the invention. I therefore, do not wish to be limited to the guard comprising a guard mem preferred form of construction for carprecisedetails of construction set forth, but I desire to avail myself of such variations and v the scope of bands embracing each end of said guard member; eyes extending upwardly from the from the bottom of each of said bands; adjustable clamping chains having eyes pivotally connected with the eyes at the bottoms of said bands, and
clamping straps pivotally connected with the eyes at the tops of said bands substan;-'
tially as describe In testimony whereof I have signed name to this specification in the presence of two subscribing witnesses. I EDMUND J. SCHMIDT. Witnesses: V
