. portable typewriting machines in.v whichr TYrWRITINMACHrNE. l' Y To all whom t may concern.' Y
Be 1t known that I, Guiones` W. CAMPBELL,
a citizen of the United States, residing inl Hartford, in the county ,of ,Hartfordand VState of Connecticut, have invented certain new and useful improvements in Typewrit-y 'ing-Machineg .of which the .following is I a specification.
. This inventionv relatesto. thek construction ofpaper-carrlages of typewriting machines,
and to means for supporting and* guiding g The improvements belong ,to theiclass of compactness, lightness, reliability and low cost of manufacture are sought. I Y v. .1 I construct the carriage frame principally i' of sheet-metahwhich is light, inexpensive I tion of the carriage, and it is made in anguand. compact, The carriageV .comprises -a sheetmetal struck-up body portion and ends which rise therefromto support the platen, upon the front of which the types strike. f
Said bod-y portion preferably comprises frontand rear bars which, for' strengthfand stiffness, are made angular in cross-section. The front bar may constitute the floor por` larcrossesection in such afway as to form Va'longitudinal groove struck up in the bottom of the floor. A ycompanion groove, forming the front rail upon which the carriage runs, cooperates withgthe first-menq tioned groove to forni araceway for aset f of` rolls upon vvhlch the floorofthe carriage is supported'and guided. This supporting frame is preferably located near the forward portion of, the carriage, so as-to constitute thev main support of the weight of:
the carriage; and thereis also provided for lthe carriagea rearroll'to `run upon a track which is also formedupon said frame.
Sai'dsupportingframe is preferably used v'for shifting the carriage thereon up and f down, to enable dierent types `to print; and
suitable hooks or guards are provided for preventing the carriageY from vrising accidentally from the rolls at eitherfront;` or rear.y Y i It' is'found, in practice, that the rail portion of the `supporting frame may be made` of sheet-metaland that the rails and grooves may be successfully struck up V and used `without grinding or otherwise exactly finishing either the tracks or the groove `1n the carriage,` and'that the carriage Lruns freely Y f y Specification of-Lette'rsPatent.: fr Patefed Mar.9, 1920.j Application med March/30,1918; serial 110,225,633. f
.- about centrally, 'of a front-strike` portable typewriting machine embodying the present improvements.
rig. 21S a' plan fthe Carriage; f'
Fig. plan of the rail frame. -upon which the carriageis supported andshifted` K Fig; 4isavperspective ofthe ioor portion of the carriage, detached.
`The paper-carriage `comprises front Vand e rear bodyportions 10,y 11v in y,the form of angle-bars and -end plates or portions 12, 18
rising therefrom; all'fof these parts being made of'sheet-metaland secured-together by means of rivets 1li passing through suitable ears 15 formed in the end plates.- The body portions 10,11,`may also be secured together by stilening members 15 vif desired. VJ ournaledY in the-latter is an axle 16 carrying a platen l1 7,.around which the work-sheet is fed tol position` to be struck bythe types 18 carried upon the forward ends of type-bars 19, the latter being suitably fulcrurned at 20 and operated by links 21 and bell-cranks 9.2, `the latter connected to key-leversv 23.
The front orbody portion `1()l of the car-"- riage is formed with a struck-upor inverted V-groove1211, which ,not vonly ,stilfens the bar andth'us conducesto rigidity, compactness and low cost, but 'also cooperates with, a Vf rail or'traclr 25 to .form a raceway 2,6 in
which run rolls 27 to'support and guide the carriage, said rolls being set at right angles v to one 'another and connected-by a suitable spacer 28 t0 form a truck.
f The `carriage is held dovvn upon the rail by means of a guide-roll 29, which Vruns upon the -under side of the rail 25'to prevent` lifting ofthe carriage therefrom, said roll 29V being pivoted upon Vthe lower end of Aan armj 30 which-projects downwardly and e forwardly'from thecentral portion of the Y {carriage-Hoor, to which it is secured.
The, struckfup groove 24 in the carriagebody is formed at about the middle portionv sof the barl 1.0,.considered from front to rear,
so that portions ofthe bar extend both for- .vvardl-y and rearwardly from the grooved portion, thus making a bar having a double angular` (or corrugated) cross-section, which is very compact and riid.' At about the middle or" the'V rear anglebar 11 of the carriage is attached-.a pendent bracket3l, carrying a roll 3:2 to run upon a rear rail 33.` The front andrear rails form portions. of a frame, .Whicln-'in this case, shifts up and down to enable different types to print. The roll29 previously `described prevents ythe forward portion ofV thecarriage from overthrovving upwardly at the shifting operation, and a hook 34 formed uponthe lower end of the bracket 31 of the rear roll extendsrunder andV close to the'iear rail 33, to prevent accidental lift-ing of the carriage at the rear side thereof." Therear rail 33? is preferably in the form of a struck-upl Hange provided i upon the upper edge of a verticalplate 35V which forms the body of the shift-frame;
' side .plates V36 extendingpforvvardly, one at each end-of the `vertical plate 35, and hav` ing` pivotal connections at 37, 33 toupper andjloive'r guidingarms 39, 40, the latter journaled upon the main frame;` atl of .the typewriting machine.
The track25 is secured to the side plates no, and preferably by suitable angleplates 36a; the -plate 35 beingsecured `to said plates 36 by ears35fL on said plate 35.
Said rear plate of the shifting frame is .preferably vstlened by forming it with a U-shape liange 42, tocause it to resemble a hook in cross-section, asshovvn at Fig. V1,
` the upper portion of the hook forming the rear rail 33 upon which the 'carriage runs, and the bracket 31 which carries-the rear roll 32 has thelinger'3t hookingV under said rail, 'to prevent lifting of the rear portion of the carriage. i
The carriage movements may be controlled by escapement mechanism comprising a rack le on the carriage, which meshes with a pinion 45, the latter connected to an escapement `wheel 16 of ordinary construction and operation. Said rack may be carried upon arms 47 pivoted to the side plates of the carriage to swing the rackup away from the pinion, to'release the carriage from the control of the Vescapement mechanism. Y I
Variations may be resorted to within the scope of the invention, and portions of the improvements may be used Without others. Having thus described my invention, 1 claim: v
