UNITED STATES JOHN H. STARIN, JR,
PATENT OFFICE. d
on NEW. YORK, N. Y.
IMPROVEMENT IN OYSTER-OPENERS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 133,267, dated November 19, 1872.
Figure 1 represents a side view of my invention. Fig. 2 is a plan or top view of the same.
Similar letters indicate corresponding parts.
This invention consists in a tool composed of two jaws, which are connected by a pivot and provided with handles similar to those of ordinary shears, one of said jaws being furnished with a knife -blade which projects therefrom beyond its tip or outer end in 'such a manner that, by means of the jaws, the edges of the oyster-sh ells can be conveniently broken off, and, by inserting the knife-blade between the shells, the oyster can be opened, and thereby the labor of opening oysters is materially simplified, and all danger of having particles of the shells mixed with the oysters is avoided.
In the drawing, the letters A B designate the two jaws of my implement, which are connected by a pivot, 00. Each of these jaws is provided with an extension, respectively, and these extensions form handles 0 D similar to the handles of ordinary tailors shears. The jaws A B B are roughened on their inner surfaces, and they are so shaped that, by their action, the edges of oyster-shells can be readily and conveniently broken 011'. From the jaw A projects a knife-blade, E, which may be made solid with said jaw, or which may be rigidly secured to the same by any suitable means. This knifeblade is similar to an ordinary oyster-knife, and after the edges of the oyster-shells have been broken off the knife-blade is inserted between ,them, and the oysters can thus be opened with ease and facility.
By the use of my tool the operation of opening oysters is rendered comparatively easy, a saving of time is effected, and the particles separated from the shells are not liable to get mixed with the oysters.
What I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
An implement for opening oysters, com: posed of two jaws,-A B, provided with handles 0 D, and connected by a pivot, to, one of said jaws being furnished with a knife-blade extension, E, all as shown and described.
This specification signed this 1st day of October, 1872.
