To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, EUGENE SIMON, a subject of the King of Great Britain, and resident of the city of Ottawa, in the Province of Ontario, Dominion of Canada, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Bundle-Tying Machines, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to improvements in bundle tying machine and the objects of the inventiom are to provide a simple and effectivemeans for tying a bundle of boards or the like with wire and severin the wire after the knot has been formed Further objects of the invention are to enable the variousbperations to be performed automatically and with a maximum degree of safety to the operator. Further objects are generally to improve and simplify the construction of the device and to enable the various working parts to better perform the functions required of them, and it consists essentially of the improved construction hereinafter described in detail in the ac companying specification and drawings.

Referring to the drawings, A represents a frame of suitable construction to support the various working parts.- B and C represent reels of wire mounted on a cross shaft 10; I have shown two reels but it will be seen that as many as are desired may be used, the operating parts being duplicated for each reel. The shaft 10 is driven with belts 11 and 12 extending from pulleys 13 therein.

The belts l1 and 12 are ordinarily .sufiiciently slack to prevent turning of the shaft 10 which is only turned when it is desired to take up the slack in the wire and this is caused to take place by a belt tightening device and control lever comprising a cross shaft 20 having rollers 21 and 22 running on the belts l1 and 12, the cross shaft 20 being supported from pivoted levers 23 and 24, being adapted to be swung to and from the belts by means of a connecting bracket-25 which is pivoted to a lever 26, which lever is centrally attached to the frame audits opposite end connected by a connecting base 27 with a controlling lever 28, the lower extremity of which is pivoted to a bracket 29,. the frame member being adapted to be held in normal position by means of a catch bracket 30 on the frame, from which it may be disengaged by swinging it a short distance laterally. The wire oneach of the reels B and C extends for- .wardly and extends through the central pen forations 30 and 31 in a two part spindle respectively. The wire, after extending around the bundle 1) passes through a slot 3% in rotatable disk 35 and through slot 36 in the gear 32. The disk 35 is rotatably mounted in a semicircular recess 3'3 formed in the plate 38 extending vertically on the frame being held in such recess by means of removable bearin plates 39 and it? which are bolted to the plate 363 and have a slot 41 between them through which wire may be inserted. To keep the disk 35 in place laterally it is formed with a plurality of peripheral anmilar projectionsdfa which fit corresponding tongues or grooves 43 in the plate 38 Fig. 6 and in the bearing members, and the disk 35 is caiised to turn with the gear 32 by means of a boltsi. which forms a pivotal connection between the disk 35 and the gear 32.
In order to effect cutting of the wire, the disk is pivoted with a stud 45 which fits a slot 46 on the gear while'the bolt it extends through the perforation 47 in the gear-end corresponding perforation 48 in the: disk. The disk is adaptedto be supported undheld in alined position with respect to the 'eaf'by means'of a spring 46 elic ted to "t in a groove l6" and bear against tnaplin L5. 'llhe spindle 33 is, formed in two par s fid'iand" 54'. Fig. 6 one of which moves with a gain 32 pulleys belts extend'to pulleys (30 on' conntershaits 61 and 62, the countershafts being connected together by means of a chain 63 engaging sprockets (S4 and on the shafts. Shaft 62 is adapted to be driven from ,a suitable driving shaft 17 driven by the pulley 18 connected to the shaft 62 by means of a bevel gear 68 designed to engage either one ofthe pinions 69 or 70 on the shaft 62,-the shaft being designed to be moved longitudinally and designed to engage either gear, the longitudinal move: ment being eiiected by means of a pivoted hand lever 71 which is provided with an arm 72 engaging a collar 73 on the shaft de signed to rotate on the shaft and not move longitudinally thereon.
The b lts 59 are normally kept tight by means of rollers 80 carried on pivoted levers 81 and held against the belt'by means ol springs 82 extending from the arms 81 to the frame.
In the operation of the invention the wire is drawn from the reel B or C and threaded by hand through the central perforation 31 then wound around the bundle D and the free' end placed loosely in the slots formed in the upper part of;the spindle 33. The lever 71 is actuated to drive the gears 82 which will twist one portion of thewire carriedin the slot aboutthe portion extending through the central perforation causing a (not to be made.
