T all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, ORVILLE H. Knmrar men, a citizen of the United States, residing at Lewellen, in the county of Garden and State of Nebraska, have invented new and useful Improvements in Road-Grading Machines, of which the following is a specification.
This invention comprehends the provision of a road grading machine .by means of which the road material is conveyed toward the center of the road to fill the ruts and holes therein, and at the same time preserve the crowned configuration of the surface of the road.
The nature and advantages of the invention will be better understood when the following detail description is taken in connection with the accompanying drawings, the invention residing in the construction,
combination and arrangement of parts as claimed.
In the drawings forming part of this specification like numerals of reference indicate similar parts in the several views and wherein Figure l is a top plan view of the machine,

The machine forming the subject matter of my invention comprises a frame includ ing parallel side members which are connected together by means of a plurality of spaced walls 11, 12 and 13 respectively. The frame is supported by the wheels 14 at the opposite sides of the frame, and a pair oi wheels 15 arranged at one end thereof. Flexible elements such as chains or the like are connected to the forward end, of the side members 10, the free ends of the chain being connected with a transverse bar 16 at the opposite ends of which are arranged the clevises 17 to which the team is hitched. Secured to the lower edge of each of the walls 11 and 12 respectively is a metallic blade 18 which may be spaced or slightly curved, the blade serving to level the surface of the road and to cut off the projections or irregular surfaces. The wall 13 is also provided with a blade 19 which is properly arched to preserve the crowned configuration of the surface of the road after the machine has passed thereover.
Projecting from the wall 11 are divergently disposed blades which not only serve to level the road, but by reason of their relative disposition serve to convey the surplus dirt or road material toward the center of the road for the purpose of filling up the ruts and holes made therein. Each of the blades comprises a fixed section 20 and a movable section 21, the latter being hingedly connected to the fixed section as at 22. These blades may be constructed from any suitable material being preferably constructed of wood and spaced at their lower edge with a metallic strip or plate constituting a wearing surface. The outer end of each of the movable sections is provided with an eye or ring 24 which, when the sections are in extended position for use are adapted to receive the hooks 25 carried by the flexible chains 26 the latter being connected by means of the rings 27 connecting the clevises 17 with the adjacent terminals of the chains 15. hen the movable sections 21 of said blades are in the position as shown in Fig. 1, the dirt is conveyed toward the center of the road as stated. As the machine is moved over the road bed, the blades carried by the walls 11 and 12 respectively, tend to distribute said dirt to provide a smooth and level surface. As the machine continues .to pass over the road, the wall 13 gives the surface of the road the desired crowning configuration. WVhen the use of the movable sections 21 of the combined scraper and conveying blade is not desired the said sections may be swung upon their pivot or hinged connection in parallel relation with the fixed sections 20 and held in this position by means of the hook 29 carried by the fixed sections engaging the eyes 2-41: carried by the movable sections.
While I have shown and described what I consider the preferred embodiment of the invention, I desire to have it understood that I do not limit myself in this connection, and that such changes may be resorted to when desired as fall within the scope of what is claimed.
