Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Feb. 24,1920.
Application filed February 24, 1919. Serial No. 278,669.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, HENRY A. SoHWARz, a citizen of the United States, residing at College Point, in the county and borough of Queens and State of New York, haveinvented certain new and useful Improvements in Clothesline Devices, of which thefollowin is a specification. 1 r
y invention relates to improvements in clothes lines, and has particular reference to means for automatically clamping the numerals are employed to designate like parts throughout the same:
Figure 1 is a side elevation of a device employing my invention; j
Fig. 2 is a plan view of the pulley equipped with the clamping means;
Fig. 3 is an end elevation of the same; and
rig. 4 is a central vertical longitudinal section through the same.
In the drawings, wherein for the purpose of illustration is shown a preferred embodiment of my invention, the numeral 5 designates a preferably grooved pulley, disposed within a preferably horizontal U- shaped frame 6. The closed end of this U- shaped frame is provided with a stationary clamping element 7 having an inclined face, as shown. The element 7 is rigidly secured to a screw 8 or other attaching element. It is thus seen that the frame 6 may be rigidly secured to a post, wall or the like. The pul-- ley 5 is pivoted upon a transverse element or pin 9 passin through the sides of the frame 6, as shown. An inverted U-shaped line guide 10 is rigidly secured to the forward end of the frame 6, as shown.
The numeral 11 designates an inverted preferablv U-shaped swinging clamping element, which straddles the pulley 5, and has the lower ends of its sides apertured for pivotally receiving the pin 9, and at its outer end this clamping element is provided with a transverse portion 12, the outer surface of which is serrated or milled for engagement with the line.
v The numeral 14 designates a coacting pulley, pivoted within a frame 15, as shown at 16. The frame 15 is adapted to be rigidly secured to asecond support, as is obvious.
Surrounding and engaging the pulleys 5 and 14 is a flexible endless element or line 17. This line has its upper run passed through the guide 10, and over and in contact with the serrated transverse element 12.
In the use of theapparatus, with the parts assembled, as shown in Fig. 1, the clothes are attached to the lower run of the flexible endless element 17 When this element or line breaks, it is obvious that the weight of the clothes will tend to pull the lower portion or run of the element 17 downwardly. This movement will cause the upper portion of the element 17 to swing the clamping element 11 downwardly, so that its serrated portion 12 has clamping engagement with the line held upon the inclined face of the clamping element 7. The line is thus supported at its upper end, and the clothes prevented from contacting with the ground, it being understood that the pulleys 5 and 14 are arranged at a suitable height so that this is possible.
It is to be understood that "the form of my invention herewith shown and described is to be taken as the preferred example of the same, and that various changes in the shape, size and arrangement of parts may be resorted to without departing from the spirit of my invention or the scope of the frame, an approximately U-shaped clamp ing element straddling the pulley and pivotally connected with the pin and having n inclined se r edcl p ng lace, an pstanding guide connected with one end of the frame, a flexible endless element engaging the pulley and passing through the guide and contacting with the inclined ser rated clamping face, and a second pulley supporting the opposite end of the endless 1O element.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature in, presence of two Witnesses,
I HENRY A. S CHWARZ.
Witnesses AEUGENE -WEBER I Josey Konmo.
