.AND INSERT rnnnnron.
Application iiled April 4, 1919. Serial No. 287,529.
To all whom t may concern.'
Be it known that LEMILE WEIL, a citizen of the United States, residing at New Orleans, State of Louisiana, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Masonry Walls and Inserts Therefor, of which the following is `a specification.
My present invention relates to imp-roveinents in masonry and like walls and a. damp proof insert for'use in the mortar or plastic joint thereof a-nd aims to provide an improved insert which may be readily a plied to the joints in any desired lengt s' or in overlapping lengths to cover any de-` sired number of bricksor blocks and preventpenetrationof dampness through' the wall. e
The invention further aims to provide an insert' which may be readily applied Iat any desired point, which will be etlicient irrespective of any irregularities-in the blocks V and arrangement and combination of parts hereinafter described and cparticularly defined by the appended claim.
In the drawings:
Figures 1 and 2 are vertical transverse sections through-,walls having my inserts incorporated in thev mortar joints thereof.
Figs. 3 to 11, inclusive, are detail cross sectional views of various forms of inserts.
Referring by reference characters to this drawing, the wall is shown as composed of blocks l which are intended to be representative of yany suitable building blocks such as brick, sto-ne or concrete. other binder is indicated at 2.
My improvedl insert may be composed of felt, metal, or any composite water Iproof material either plain'or reinforced of suffi-l cient stiifness to maintain its fo-rm or `outline andl may be made in strips of'any de- -My preferred form ofstripc-is shown in.
3 as' havingI a portion 3a adapted toglie uponthe upper surface of a layer or course The mortar or` of bricks or blocks and a vertical portion 3b adapted to abut the vertical face of such course. The horizontal portion is providedwith a longitudinal corrugation 3 of a height corresponding approximately to the thickness of the mortar orother binder.
' Instead of making the corrugation of inverted V-shape in crossI section, as shown vin Fig. 3, I may shape it by two right angular bends as shown in Fig. 4, providing a vertical portion 4a of a height corresponding approximately to the mortar thickness, and a horizontal portion 4 adapted to abut therunder face of the next upper course of bricks or bloc-ks.
In the form shown in IFig. 5 I form the corrugation -by simply curving the upper edge upward as indicated at '5*l in fFig. 5, the curve being continued if desired to form a coil as shown.
For some joints I may omit the iat portion 3a and simply provide a horizontal portion 6b and corrugation 6a as shown in Fig. 6 and if desired I may omit both vertical and horizontal fiat portions and provide a plurality of longitudinal corrugations asy Patented Feb. 24, 1920.
indicated at 7a, Fig. 7. One edge of the sheet or insert of, Fig. 7 vmay be made to A. extend vertically downward to about the vertical face of the course of bricks as indicated at 8a, Fig. 8, or may be carried horizontally beneath the corrugated portion as indi-cated at 9, Fig, 9.
In some instances I may use an insert of plain angular form in cross section, either ofi-ight angular form with the-two portions l0L and l()b at right angles to each other, asshown in Fig. '10 or with one Portion 10a inclined at an obtuse angle to the other, as
indicated at 11, Fig. 1l.
lHaving thus described my invention, what I claim is:
In a plastic joint formasonry and the like, the combination with the upper and lower layers of bricks o-r blocks and the interposed plastic binder, of a layerof damp proof material embedded in said plastic binder, and having an off-set or corrugated portion corresponding to the thickness of the* plastic material so as to contact with the surfaces. of theadjacent bricks at top and bottom, said layer extending lengthwise for the' full length of the joint.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature.
' EMILE WEIL.
