r Specification of Letters Patent. Patented Feb, 24, 192( lipplioati on filed May 1, 1919. Seria1No. 294.009.
To all whom it may concern: V
Be it known that I, Lamont VJ. Char MAN, a citizen of the United States, residing at Indianapolis, in the county of Marion and State of Indiana, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Fasteners for Shipping-Crates; and I'do hereby declare the following to description ofthe invention, such as will en,- able others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
This inventionrelates to new and useful improvements in fasteners for shipping crates of the collapsible or knock-down type and has for one of its objects the provision of means for detachably securing the sides and ends of the crate together and which will firmly hold the walls of the crate against movement in relation to each other.
Another object of this invention is the provision of means whereby the cover of the crate can be fastened in place Whenthe sides and end walls are'fastened together.
A further object of this invention is the n-ovisionof a fastener for shipping crates of the above stated character, which shall be simple, durable and efficient, and which may be manufactured and sold at a comparatively low cost.
With these and other objects in view as will become more apparent as the description proceeds, the invention consists in certain novel features of construction, combi nation and arrangement of parts as will be hereinafter more claimed. 7
For a complete understanding of my invention, reference is to be had to the following description and accompanyingdrawing, in which 2- I I Figure 1 is a transverse sectional view'of a shlpping crate illustrating the side and end walls thereof fastened together with my improved fastener.
Fig. 2 is a plan view of the fastener.
Referring in elected to show only one end of a collapsible crate having my invention applied thereto and it will be understood that a similar fastener will be provided at the other end of the crate.
The numeral 1 indicates the end wall of the crate having abutting the edges thereof side Walls 2. Positioned upon the ends and be aifull, 'clean'and exact lever 4 arrives in looking position,
"passes into apertures causing fully described and detail to the drawing, I have side wallsis a cover 3. A- lever 4 is pivoted to the end wall 1 as illustrated at 5 and has connected thereto by pivots, rods 6.
Therods 6 are disposed upon opposite sides ofthe pivot 5 and extend in opposite directions. The rods 6 haveitheir ends bent (to form hooks 7 The free ends of the hooks 7 are bent rearwardly and extend parallel with the rods as 6 are slidably supported by brackets 9 secured to the end wall 1 adjacent each edge thereof and one bracket being disposed in a plane slightly above theother so as to correspond with the pivotal connections of the rods to the lever. The sidewalls 2 are provided with slots 10 which receive the hooks 7 and a portion of the rods 6 to permit the ends 8 to extend beyond the side walls during the movement-of the lever 4 and as the the rods and'the extension 8 6 drop downwardly 11 formed in the side illustrated at 8. The rods walls and disposed slightly below-the slots 1.0, thereby firmlylocking the side Walls to the end wall.
By swingingthe lever 4 laterally on its pivot the hooks 7 will be moved out of en-' 11. lVhen the gagement with the apertures hooks are inthis position, the lever 4 is swung in a reverse direction or to a locking position again which retracts the hooks them to pass through the slots 10 freeing the side walls from theend walls.
The cover 3 .is provided with a slot 13 adapted to receive the upper end of the lever 4 when said lever is in a locking position, and the upper end of the lever is provided with an opening 14 for the purpose of receiving a padlock or like fastener whereby the entire device is locked in assembled position.
While I have shown and described the referred embodiment of my invention, it will be understood that minor changes in construction, combination, and arrangement of parts'may be made without departing from the spirit and scope of the invention as claimed. x
. Having thus describedmy invention, what I claim is 1. A fastener for crates including. side and end walls, a lever pivoted to the end Wall, rods pivoted to said lever, and extending in opposite directions, hooks formed on the ends of said rods, said sidewalls having slots to receive the hooks and a portion of the rod, said side walls having openings disposed ina plane below the slots to receive the ends of the hooks when the lever is swung into locking position. V 2. A fastener for crates lnc-luding side "and end walls, a lever pivoted to theiend wall, rods pivotally connected to said lever and extending in opposite directions and one rod being disposed in a plane above the "and said openings adapted to receive the ends of the hooks when into'locking position. o V
3. A fastener for crates including side and end walls and a cover havin' a slot, a lever pivoted to the end walls, fastening means connected to said leverand adapted to secure the side walls to theendvWalls, said. lever extending through the slot of the cover when in looking position and provided the lever is swung with an opening to receive an auxiliary fas- V tening means. 7
