APPLICATION FILED JUNE 9.1919.
Patented Feb. 24, 1920.
avweutoz UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
MARY H. V. OTWELL, 0F CALRLINVILLE, ILLINOIS.
SANITARY HAN DKERCHIEF-CONTAINER.
Application filed June 9. 1919.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, MARY H. V. OTWELL, a citizen of the United States, residing at Carlinville, in the county of Macoupin and State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Sanitary Handkerchief-Containers, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to special receptacles and more particularly to handkerchief.
containers.
The primary object of this invention resides in the provision of a handkerchief container whereby the handkerchiefs are retained in a sanitary condition before use.
A further object of this invention resides in the provision of a handkerchief container wherein the handkerchiefs are retained in separate compartments before and after use.
A still further object of this invention resides in the provision of a handkerchief container having separate compartments that are readily separable to permit the sterilization of that compartment in which the used handkerchiefs are placed.
A still further object of this invention resides in the provision of a handkerchief container consisting of compartments which are hingedly secured together in such manner that they can be separated for replenishing the supply of handkerchiefs or disposing of those that have been used.
With these and other objects in view, this invention resides in certain novel features of construction and arrangement of elements to be more fully described in the specification and pointed out in the appended claim, it being understood that the right is reserved to resort to such minor departures in the specific construction herein referred to as come within the scope of the claim.
In the accompanying drawing Figure 1 is a perspective view of the handkerchief container showing a handkerchief about to be extracted therefrom;
Fig. 2 is a similar view of the same in an inverted position;
Fig. 3 is a similar View of the same showing the compartments partly removed from one another;
Fig. 4: is a similar view of the used handkerchief compartment with its lid partly opened;
Fig. 5 is an enlarged central sectional view on the line 5-5 of Fig. 1.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Feb. 24, 1920.
Serial No. 302.759.
Referrin to the present disclosure of this invention, tie numeral 5 designates a handkerchief container which consists of a compartment 6 for the reception of unused handkerchiefs and a compartment 8 for the reception of used handkerchiefs. These compartments are connected along one edge by an interlocking hinge joint 10 which permits the compartments to be slid in opposite directions for their disengagement with one another after their fastening elements 12 and 13 have been released.
The compartment 6 has its wall 14 provided with an elongated slot 16 which is intersected by a slot 18 of much greater width in order that the tips of the thumb and forefinger can be readily inserted therein for withdrawing the top handkerchief with in the compartment through the slot 16, thus insuring the extraction of but one handkerchief at a time.
The compartment 8 has a slidable cover 20 thereon in which is provided an opening 22 for the passage of the used handkerchiefs to the interior of this compartment during the depression of the spring actuated stopper 24:.
The aforesaid stopper not only closes the opening in said cover 20, but when in projected position prevents the removal of said cover, therefore it is necessary to depress this stopper before the cover can be re moved.
WVith the aforesaid embodiment of elements, it is manifest that a handkerchief container is produced which is cheap of manufacture sanitary, and readily adaptable for the convenience of personal or public use, especially in hospitals or sanitariums.
Having thus described my invention what I claim is:
In an article of the character described comprising separate receptacles, inter-locking hinge joints securing one edge of said receptacles together, fastening means securing said receptacles against disengagement with one anothei', a slidable cover over one of said receptacles with an entrance passage therein, a stopper in said entrance passage of said slidable cover, and resilient means bearing on said stopper.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature.
MARY H. V. OTVVELL.
