FOLDING IBEDSIDE-GRIB.
Specification of Letters Fatent.
Patented Feb. 24, 1920.
Application filed August 1, 1919. Serial No. 314,747.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, IVAN JAKLICH, a subject of Jugofilavia, State of Croatia, having declared my intention to become a citizen of the United States of America, residing at folded up, to automatically swing under the bed where it is out of the way and partially concealed.
The object of the invention is to provide a device of this class, which is compact in form, easily made and assembled, which is satisfactory inoperation and is'not readily liable to get out of order.
The invention consists of a crib of greater normal width than the distance from the side rail of the bed to the floor, which is capable of carrying out the foregoing objects. More particularly, the invention consists inthe many features and details of construction which will be hereafter niore fully set forth in the specification and claims.
Referring to the drawings, in which simiindicate the same parts throughout the several views,
Figure 1 is a perspective view taken from the side of the bed of mechanism illustrating this invention in its preferred form in the position which the device assumes at the side of the bed, ready for use.
Fig. 2 is an end view of the mechanism of Fig. 1, to ether with the bedstead to which it is attached.
Fig. 3 is a perspective view of the bedstead and crib base platform, as shown in Figs. 1 andi2, the inclosing rail appearing in Figs. 1 and 2 being removed.
Fig. 4: is a side view of the parts of Fig. 3,'with the base'plate only of the crib folded up ready to be swung under the bed.
Fig. 5 is the same view as Fig. at, with the rail mechanism of the crib attached to the folded base plate. 1 r
Fig. 6 is an'end view of. the bed with the completely collapsed mechanism of Fig. 5 swung under it.
Fig. 7 is a sectional view on the line 7-7 of Fig. 5, but swung through an angle of 90 to the position which the completely folded device assumes on the completion of the collapsing operation and preparatory to allowing the parts to swing to the position of Fig. 6.
In the drawings, two bed legs 10 and 12, one end rail 14 and two side rails 16 and 18 are shown, this being all that is required to illustrate the application of the device of this invention to any sort of a bed. Applied along the rail 18 and parallel thereto is a horizontal supporting board or plate 20 so pivotally attached to the rail 18 by means of hooks that it swings around the rail at rightangles to it, andhaving on its underside an eyelet 24; to which is connected a retractile spring 26 whose opposite end is attached by a suitable hook 28 to the opposite bed rail 16. Pivotally mounted on the underside of this member 20 by suitable hinges 30 is one or more legs 32 connected by any suitable means, as for instance the wire rod 34:, to move in unison between the position shown in Figs. 1, 2 and 3, where these legs supportthe member 20 in horizontal position with reference to the bed, and the col lapsed position shown in Figs. 6 and 7. If the member 20 be treated as a bed seat and the parts hereafter described be omitted, the mechanism thus far described is shown, described-and claimed in my earlier patent application, Serial Number 263,075, filed November 18, 1918.
But while member 20 may do as seat for a person to sit on, it is not of sufficient width for a child to sleep on, and the problem solved by this invention is the combining with theparts previously described, such parts as will make the seat 20 into a suitable childs crib, which is collapsible and retrac able by the spring 26 under the bed.
In order to accomplish the above mentioned purpose, a supplemental board or plate 36 is pivoted to the outer edge of member 20 by some sort of suitable hinge construction, as for instance hinges 38, so positioned and arranged that when the parts are in the position of Fig. 3, member 36 can fold over onto member 20; orto describe it in another way, up against the outside of member 20 when member 20 is moved to a posi tion where it hangs down directly under the rail 18, as shown in n For purposes of description, the two members 20 and 36, heretofore described, will be referred'to together as the crib base.
The crib base members 20 and 36 are, at a convenient point, provided with interlocking latch or catch members 4042 adapted to detachably secure these members together in folded position shown in Figs. 3 to 7 inclusive. When the crib base isin eX- tended position, shown in Figs. 1 to 3-, portion 36, is supported from the floor by-suitable legs 44,1nounted on pivotal hinges 46 on the underside of base member 36. These legs 44 are adapted ,to be collapsed to the position shown in Figs. 4 to 7 inclusive when.
the entire crib mechanism is collapsed, as shown. 1
As a child cannot sleep upon the plain crib baseshown in Fig. 3 Without retaining devices, for the bed clothing at least, such retaining mechanism is provided in a collapsible crib rail composed of a side member 48 and two end members50 hinged thereto in any suitable manneras for instance the hinges 52, so as to permit the collapsing of this crib rail mechanism from the extended position of'Figs. 1 and 2 to the collapsed position of Figs. 5, 6 and 7. The end mem bers 50 are provided adj jacent to their points of hinging to the side member 48 with hooks 54 which engage suitable eyelets 56 on the crib base member 36, and at their outer or swinging free ends with hooks 58 which engage eyelets 60011 the crib base member 20. The crib rail device 4S50 is also secured inposition to the crib base member by pins 62 suitably interposed between the base member and the rail member at any points desired for satisfactory operation of the device.
In the particular construction here shown,
the crib side member 48 is made up of parallel bars, and as the spaces between certain of them happen to bridge the supporting legs 44 when in the collapsed position described, vertical connecting members 66 are provided at suitable points in the front rail member to engage these legs 44 in collapsed position and prevent their swinging out through the crib rail member 48 when the parts assume the position of Fig. 6.
The crib rail mechanism thus far described, is collapsible from the position of Figs. 1 and 2 to that of Figs. 5, 6 and 7 and is detachably securable to the folded collapsed crib base through the fact that one side of the crib side rail 48 enters and rests upon suitable hooks 70, provided for the purpose on the underside of crib base member 36, while the hooks 58, inthis collapsed positon, enter and'engage suit-able openings 7 2 in an angular plate 74 mounted upon the underside of crib'base member 36 in such a position that when the crib railsare collapsed and applied to the crib base member held :thereby the spring.
' of Figs. 1 and 2 wherein the operator places suitable bedding inside the crib rails 48-50 and the crib is ready for use for sleeping purposes. WVhen such use is no longer desired, the operator first removes the bedding, then releases hooks'54 and 58, thus releasing the crib rail mechanism, and it can be lifted. and folded up ready to be applied as shown in Figs. 5, 6 and 7. The removal of the crib rail mechanism leaves the remaining parts as shown in- Fig. 3. Theoperator now. takeshold of crib base. member 36, tilts it over on its hinges into engagement with the base member 20, and manipulates the latch member mechanism 4042 to attach these parts together. He now takes the folded crib rail mechanism, places it on the ex posed side ofcrib base member 36 over the latters folded down leg members 44, with the rail member in engagement with the hooks 70, and the books 58 entering holes 72. Theoperator now, by kicking action or otherwise, swings legs 34 up against the underside of crib base. member 20, where upon the spring 26 draws'the entire mechanism to the position shown in Fig. 6. Obviously, a' reversal of the operation ust .de-. scribed returns the parts to crib form, ready for use. V r
It should be noticed that the crib base 2036 is approximately twice the height of the distance from the railylO to the floor, and thatnotwithstanding this fact, substantially the entire crib mechanism is swung under the bed in collapsed position and in actualpractice, if a stronger spring is provided than that illustrated in the drawings, the crib mechanism can be drawn farther under the bed than is shownin Fig.6. I
