COMBINED MOP ANDy SCRUEBER.
phis, in the county of lShelby and State of Tennessee, have invented anew and useful YCombined Mop and Scrubber, of which the following is a specification.
This invention has referenceto combined mops and scrubbers, Vand its object 1s to provide an implement capable of being used as a Inop or asa scrubber for cleaning surfaces where both devices may be needed,
*without the necessityfof employing separate implementslfor thepurpose.
In accordance with the invention there is provided a handle of suitable length, the
handle being hollow`- and-arranged for the reception of a hose by ymeansof which water may be directedthrough the handle. A head, which may be formed Lof pipe, is furnished atthe appropriate end of the handle, and this pipe is cut away on one side to receive a portion of yanotherhead which may be made fast to or removed from the firstnamed head andv is designed to carry the fabric portion of a mop with the threads, constituting the mop, in part seated in the cutaway portion of the irst-named head.v
Vconnection with the mop alone in case the scrubbing brush is removed from the firstnamedhead.
The invention will be bestV understood from a considerationv of the following detailed description taken in connection with the accompanying drawing forming part of this specification, with the understanding, however, that the-invention is vnot confined to any strict conformity with the showing ofthe drawing, but may be changedv and modified so long as such changes and modifications mark no material departure from the salient features of the invention as eX- pressed in the appended claims.
In the drawing Figure 1 is a plan view of the head end of the combined mop and scrubber, but omitting the fabric portion ofthe mop in order to display parts of the structure which would otherwise be hidden.
i Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Feb. 24, 1920.
Application led .Tune 20, 1919. Serial No. 305,488.
Fig. 2 isa section on the line 2-2 of Fig. 1.
Fig. 8 is a `section-onthe line 3-3 of eferring'to the drawing, there is shown 'a head 1 which may be formed of pipe shaped into a generally rectangular structure including side bars 2, 3, and end bars 4, 5. Connected to the mid portion of the side bar 2 is a pipe extension 6 properly shaped and proportioned to constitute a Vhandle and this pipe may terminate in or include a valve 7 beyond which the pipe 6 may be rcontinued in the form of a hose 8, whereby water may be directed through the valve 7 and pipe 6 into the head 1, the hose S being of course connected to some-suitable source of water under pressure.V
Along the side 2 the head 1 is provided with perforations 9 which may slant toward the other side of the head so as to direct small streams of water away from the side 2 and from the plane of the head 1. The side 3 has a cutaway portion 10 along the greater part of its length and facing the side 2.
There is also provided a scrubbing brush 11 havingV a b ristle carrying block or board l2 as is customary. The board 12 is grooved, as shown at 13, to seat the end bars 4L, 5 to some extent, and extending lengthwise of the board about midway of its width are grooves 14C designed to each receive an extension 15 of a clip 16, the other end of the clip having notches 17 to underride the heads of screws L18 carried by the board 12. The extensions l'are so related to the board that, when seated in the grooves 14, turn-buttons 19 `carried by the boa-rd 12 may be moved into holding relation to the extensions 15, therelby clamping the clips 16 onto the end members 4c and thus irmly securing the scrubbing brush tothe head 1. The structure is such, however, that the scrubbing brush may be readily detached when desired by turning the buttons 19 from engaging relation to the extensions 15 and withdrawing the clips 16.
Midway of the side 2 of the head 1 there is provided an upstandingear 2O for receiving va threaded stem 21 projecting from one side of a frame 22 having an end bar 23 arranged to seat in the cutaway portion or opening 10 of the Side bar 3. The bar 23 is designed to engage a mop fabric 24C and hold it by its intermediate portion seated in the bar 3, the bar 23 forcing the fabric into the interior of the bar 3 through the cutaway portion 10. The fabric is forced into the bar 3 with any desired degree of Y` the bar 3 and is long enough to reach a surface upon which the bristles of the brush ,11
rest.
y ward and against the brush when thelatter is in place, or toward the mop when the brush is removed. The -water will alsoy flow along the end bars l and 5 and to and vthrough the opening' or cutaway portion l0 of the side bar 3, it being assumed that the perforations 9 are relatively small so that allv the water reaching the side bar 2 does not escape through the perforations 9.
VThere-are conditions where a floor or other surface has dirt thereon so tenacious to the floor as to require the action of the'brush l1.A There are other conditions where the dirt' does not cling to the floor and ,hence maybe readily acted upon'bythe mop fabric'24. Again, the conditions` may be such as to permit the use of both the scrubber and the mop, the scrubbing loosening the dirt and theY mop gathering it.
What is claimed is l. A combined mop and scrubber, comprising a hollow handle and a head carried by and communicating therewith and composed of hollow side and end bars, one of the side bars having perforations directed toward the other side 'bar and the second Y side bar being longitudinally cut away toward the perforated bar, a scrubbing brush and means for fastening` it to the end bars of the head, and a clamp frame carried by the head and adapted to enter the cutaway side bar to secure a mop fabric in said cutaway portion.
2*. A. mop, comprising ahead-with a handle, lsaid head being composed of side and end bars and both the head and handle be- Y Ving formed of pipe, one of the side bars having perforations directed towardA the other side bar 'and the latter being cut away The scrubbing brush may be used alone on the side towardthe first side bar, and means for securing a mop fabric in the cutaway portion.
3. A mop, comprising a head with a han# dle, `said head being composed of side and end bars and both the Vhead and handle being formed ofv pipe, one of the side bars v having perforations directed `toward the u, other side bar and the latter being cut away on the sideto'ward Vthe'first side bar, said head being alsoy providedwith (al clamp frame for` ak mop fabric, said clamp frame being 'carried' by thefhead land cooperating with the cut-away sidebar' to hold the mop in saidcutaway portion.
4. combined mop and scrubber, comprising a head formed .of pipe and composed of side and end bars, a handle. fast to the head midway of the length of one of the side bars and also` composed of pipe, the side bar connected tofthehandle being perfo'- rated on the side toward the other' side bar and the second-named side bar being; cut away lengthwise on the sidevtoward the first-named side bar, a scrubbing brush having means for securing it to the end bars of the head, and aclamp framefor the mop carried bythe head and ,lcoperatingwith the second-named side bar togclamp a mop fabric in the cutaway.` portion thereof;
5. Ina combined mop .and scrubber, a
hollow'vhandle, a head on Ythe handle. of
substantially .rectangular shape andV ,com-` prising side'andend bars. of pipe, and a brush adapted for attachment :to thehead, and removable clips carried by .thev brush with .one endof each clip countersunk into the vbrush and the latter being provided with a turn-button for each clip, the head being constructed to direct water onto the brush.
-6. In a combinedmop and scrubber, a
ksubstantially rectangular'head with vmeans for directing water thereinto, saidhead -having one side bar cut away toward the other side bar, a clamp frame carried by Vthat side of the head remote from the cut-awayside bar and, adapted to engage in "the latter, whereby to clamp a mop ,fabric against the cut-away side bar with thefabric entering said side bar, and/means for holding a b-rush to the head.
In testimony, that I claim theforegoing as my own, I-have heretoV aiiiXed Vmy signature.` A g u A S. ALBIN. vWitnesses: u u Y i WM. RAY TooMBs, l ALBERT MAYOR.
