ADJUSTABLE DIVISOR.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Feb. 24, 1920;
Application filed June 16, 1919. Serial No. 304,544.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, ARTHUR P. AGKER- irAN, a citizen of the United States of Amerioa, residing at Great Barrington, countyof Berkshire, State of Massachusetts, have mvented certain new and useful Improvements in Adjustable Divisors, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to apparatus used by draftsmen for dividing a line or distance into a number of equal parts. The best .form of apparatus embodying my invention at present known to me is illustrated in the accompanying two sheets of drawings in which:

Fig. 5 is a cross section on line 55 or Fig. 3.
Throughout the drawings like reference characters indicate like parts. 21, 1s a $018- sor-like structure having the set screw 22, as a pivot. 23, 23, etc., are a series of pencil-like strips or-pointer fingers located on the under surface of a set of lazytong-like linkage and connected to that structure by means of slots 33, and perforations which engage with extension pivot pins 36, of the lazy'tong-like linkage. 24, 24, are similar pointer strips or fingers located on the up per surface ofthe lazy tong-like lmkage and connected thereto by slots 33, engaging extension pivot pins 34, of the lazy tongs.
The lazy tong-like structure is composed of the upper members 25, and the lower members 26,-which are jointed together by pins 34, and 36,'each member 25, having four points of pivotal connect1on to members 26, and vice versa, whereby there'is formed what I will call a double set of lazy tong-like linkage. That is to say, one which has two complete series of pivot points running lengthwise of the set.
27, 27, are carrier bars connected to the lazy tong-like linkage at separate points and in line with certain of the pointer strips, the connection being such as to permit the opening and closing of the lazy tong-like linkage. These carrier bars have their outer ends bent upwardly from the plane of the lower surface of the lazy tong-like linkage,
as shown at 28, in Fig. 2, and these extensions may be connected by hinges 29, 29, whose axes are in a plane parallel to the plane of the lazy tong-like linkage, to short links 39, 39, which are pivoted to the free ends of the scissor-like structure 21, at 38, 38. The effect of this construction is to give the scissor-like structure a universal joint connection with the lazy tong-like linkage so that the lazy tongs and the scissor-like handle may open and close freely, even though the lazy tong-like linkage lies in one plane, such as the plane of the paper on which they rest, and the scissor-like structure lies in another plane so as to permit the same to extend upward away from the plane oi the paper to allow the operator to conveniently grasp the same. A strip in the center of each carrier bar section 28, is bent upward forming a lug 37, and similar lugs are formed on links 39, 39. These lugs prevent the scissor-like structure 21, from resting on the pointers when folded completely over.
It is evident from the foregoing description that when. the operator opens and closes the scissor-like structure 21, the linkage structure will open and close at the same rate, and the pointer strips 23, 24, will be moved toward and from one another equal distances and will always remain parallel one to another. In order to insure that the points of these pencil-like strips or pointers shall always be in the same line, I employ a series of short guide links 30, 30, one end of each of which is pivoted to the end of one of the set of pointer strips 24, by pivot pin 31, while the other end is pivoted to one of the linkage members 25, 25, by a pin 35. The pin 35 is located half way between the adjacent pivot pins 34, and 36, of the lazy tonglike linkage and the length of the guide link 30, between centers of pins 31 and 35, is equal to the distance between the centers of the pins 36 and 35. As the lazy tong-like linkage open and close this guide link 30, will cause each pointer strip to slide along its slotted connections with the pivots 34, 34, of the lazy tong-like linkage so as to be always in the same position relative to the adjacent pointer strips 23, 23. Consequently the pointer ends of all the pointer strips 23, and 24, will be in the same plane, and if the pointed ends of one set of strips, as 24, are bent downward, as shown in Fig. 2. all the points of all the pointer strips will always be in one and the same straight line point of; the drawing.

To facilitate this the pointerswill be numbered be ginning with 0 on the leftiand reaching20, on the right as shown. In. like manner the apparatus could ,be usedfor other purposes.

Among the advantages of my invention are .the following: It may be cheaply made out ofstamped metal parts. It can be operated with one hand conveniently, while the draftsman canhold his Pencil inthe other hand for-making the necessary markings. Byhav-ing the twosets of pointers in .diiferent ,places, .double the usual number of of lazy tong-like. linkage.
Various changes could be made in: the details ofconstruetion here illustrated and described Without departing from the .substance of my invention so longjas the general principles of operation and construction above. set forth are retained.

to a member of one ofthelseriesof pointer strips and-at the .other'to the linkage, whereby. on" the opening or closing :ofthe-linkage the. pointer strips may slide along their-slotted connections with the linkage underi the control of: their pivotal connections therewvith and with the guidelinks, so that the extremities of the pointers are always held pivot pin of the set located near the other edge of the linkage, a second series of pointer strips having slotted connections with the pivot pins of the set located along the said other edge of the linkage andwith the corresponding pivot pins of the set located near the first mentioned edge of the linkage, and a plurality of short guide links each of which is pivoted at one end to a member of the second set of pointer strips and at the other to an element of the linkage, whereby on the opening or closing of the linkage the pointer strips have their pivotal connections held in line, while their slotted connections to the linkage permit the necessary relative movements of the various elements thereof.

A combination such as set forth in claim 9, in which all members of one series of pointer'strips are located on one surface of the lazy tong like linkage set and all members of the other series are located on the other surface and the projecting ends of one series of pointers are bent into line with those of the other series.
11. A combination such as set forth in claim 1, in which the members of the scissors-like structures are provided with hinges permitting it to be folded over on the linkage, and with cooperating spacing lugs adapted to prevent the scissors touching the linkage when so folded over.
