5mm n for fizirawafci fl wam . ANDREW J. MAN GIN I, OF W..-i.RR.EN, PEN N SYLVANIAQ HAND-TOOL.
Application filed August 8, 1918.
To all whom it may concern:
Be-it known that I, ANDREW J. MANGINI,
a citizen of the United Stats, residing at lVarren, in the county of Warren and State 0f Pennsylvania, have invented new and useful Improvements in Hand Tools, of which'the following is a specification.
The present invention relates to improvements in hand tools or implements, and more especially to those of the general class em bodying a handle and blades or similar operative parts adapted to be removably and interchangeably fitted to the handle. The primary object of the invention is to prowhereby the different interchangeable blades or operative parts may be easily and quickly removed from the handle and yet a firm c011- nection is provided between thehandle and the blade or operative part, the tool having preferably a holder adapted to receive the blade or equivalent part, this holder being pivotally or movably connected to the handlewhereby relative movement between the holder and the handle will automatically and forcibly eject the blade or operative part therefrom toenable another blade or other operative part to be readily substituted.
To these and other ends, the invention consists in certain improvements, and combinations and arrangements of parts, all as will be hereinafter more fully described, the novel features being pointed out particu larly in the claims at the end of the specift cation.-
In the accompanying drawing:
Figure 1 is an elevation, partly in section,
of a hand tool constructed in accordance with the present invention.
Fig. 2 is aview similar to Fig. l but show ing apart thereof in section in a plane at a right'angle to the plane of the section in Fig. 1.
to hand tools or implements of the class adapted to removably and interchangeably Specification of Letters Patent.

receive different blades or operative parts. preferred embodiment of the invention is shown in the'accompanying drawing and will be hereinafterdescribed in detail. It is to be understood, however, that the invention is not restricted to the precise construction'shown as equivalent constructions are contemplated and will be included within the scope of the claims.
The tool, as shown, comprises a handlel which mav be composedof wood or other appropriate material, a ferrule or fitting 2 mgly shaped shank 9 on the blade and the holderis also formed with a slot or kerf 10 to fit the tongue 3 attached to the handle. The blade is preferably formed on its end with a rectangular key or tang 11 which fits into the'slot'or kerf 10 of the holder when the blade isinserted into the holder, theengagement of the opposite flat sides of the key with the opposed parallel walls of the slot 10 of the holder forming a driving con nection between the holder The base of the holder against the end of the ferrule or fitting 2 and when the holder is in this position" the key 11 on the blade will be seated in the notch 4 in the tongue 3. eratively connected'to'the ferrule 2 by a 6 is adapted to abut A holder and the I blade;
The holder is oppivot pin 12 which is secured in the holder and extends through aslide 13 which is guided to reciprocate in a slot 14' formedthe tongue-3, this pin and longitudinally in slide permitting pivotal movementand the handle.
15 'is attached to through the relative longitudinal and between the blade holder Preferably, a stem or rod the slide 13 and extends with the forward wall of the ferr le andthe forward wall of the ferrule 2 and a compression spring 16' is interposed spring also serves to normally retain the the handle.
blade holder in longitudinal alinement with V In using a tool constructed as shown and described, the blade or other operative part i .lwhich it is desired'to use is inserted into the socket 8 of the holder so that'the key 11 on the inner end of the blade is seated in the notch 4L of the tongue 3 and between the walls of the slot 10 in the holder. The
blade is then operatively connected to the s rin servin to normall maintain the ing instantly removable abutting engagement of these parts. When it is desired to remove a blade for any purpose, such for example as for substitution of another blade, it is only necessary to retract the holder lon 'itudinally of the handle and then swing the holder laterally in either direction, as shown for example in Fig. 3. By so swinging'the holder and the blade therein, the key 11 on the blade is caused to engage one of the cam surfaces 5 on the forward end of the tongue 3,'and as the swinging of-the'holder and blade continues this earn 1 surface will forcibly eject the 'blade' from the holder, the longitudinal movement of the holder relatively to the handle being limited by the abutment of the slide 13 against 'the forward end of the slot 14. After the blade has beenejected the spring 16 will automatically restore the holder to its normal position in alinement with the. handle and with its rear end abutting against'the ferrule. The holder is then ready to receive another blade or operative. part.
' A hand tool embodying the present invention enables screw-driver blades, scrapers, ehisels and'other operative parts to be readily and easily interchanged with respect to ahandle common to all the'blades or'operative parts,-thus avoiding delays heretofore experienced in the useof tools of this general class, due to'the sticking of the blade in the-handle or holder, the blade or operative part, according to the present invention, be-
from the handle without the aid'of any attachment or another tool. Furthermore, the blade or operativepart is securely keyed or connected to the holder and the holder in turn is securely coupled or connected to the handle,
and hence the maximum power which can be applied to the handle will be transmitted without strainor breakage to the blade or operative part. 1 Iclaim as my invention: 1 A tool comprising 'a support, a holder having' a socket to detachably receive a holder pivotally blade, said holder being connected to the g support and tiltable' with respect thereto, 7 and means operated byrelative tilting movement between theholder and support for forcibly ejecting the blade from the holder. 7 2. Ahandtool comprising a handle,a related to the handle and adapted to interchangeably receive different blades or operative parts, and cam means operated by relative pivotal; movement between the holder and 7 blade or operative part from the holder.
3. A tool comprising a handle, movable laterally with respectto the handle and adapted to removably receive a blade or operating part, and means including a cam attached to the handle and operative upon the blade during relative lateral movement between the holder and handle for ejecting the blade'from the holder. .7 H
45Atool comprising ahandle having a handle for ejecting a a holder tongue fixedthereto and provided with a,
cam surface, and a blade holder slotted to fit said ton ue and capable of displacement i laterally thereof, the cam on said tongue bebliide from the holder.
5. A tool comprising a tongue rigidly fixed thereto and provided with a cam surface on its extremity, a blade holder slotteddiametrically to straddle said tongue, and meanspivotally connecting said holder to the handle and permitting rela tive tilting movement between such parts,
said cam on the tongue being operative on of the .ing operative on a blade in said holder durin such lateral displacement to eject the handle having a tongue,a blade holder tiltably fittedto'said tongue and having abutments adapted to cooperate with the abutments on the handle, and means pivotally connecting the holder to the handle, the cam surface on the tongue being operative on a blade in the holder during relative pivotal movement between the holder and handle to: eject such blade.
7. A tool comprising a handle provided with a ferrule havinga flat tongue projecting therefrom with an intermediate notch and diverging cam surfaces at the extremity, said tongue, being adapted to a part of a blade in the holder be seated in said notch in and a blade holder tiltable laterally on:
the tongue while the holder and handle are 7 in alinement. and one ofsaid cam'surfaces being operative on such part of the blade when the holder is tilted relatively to the handle, thereby'ejecting the blade from the handle. I 8. A tool comprising a handle provided with-a tongue pro ecting therefrom and 10 handle the tongue being operative on a blade in the holder, during such relative tilting movement, to eject the blade.
In testimony whereof I have hereunto set my hand in presence of the subscribing Witnesses.
