FLY-KILLER.
Specification cf Letters Patent.
Patented Feb. 17, 1920.
Application led January 25, 1919. Serial No. 272,984.
Be it known that I, Memos Z; vVoHL- HUTER, a citizen of the United States, residing at Chicago, in the county of Cook and State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Fly-Killers, Ofwhich the following is a specification.
The invention has reference to fly-killers, and the general object thereof is to provide a device which is extremely simple in construction and at the same time is of maximum durability.
A further and more specific object of the invention is to provide an improved method of mounting the flexible member of the device so that it will not, under severe usage, pull away from its support.
The objects of the invention thus generally stated, together with other and ancillary advantages, are attained by the construction and arrangement illustrated in the accompanying drawings, wherein Figure 1 is a side elevation of a ily-killer embodying the features of my invention. F ig. 2 is a fragmentary sectional view, on an enlarged scale, taken on line 2-2 of Fig. 1. Fig. 3 is a similar view taken on line 3 3 of Fig. 1. Fig. 4 is a fragmentary view of the lower portion of the wire screen comprising the flexible member of the device. Fig. 5 is a plan view of the blank from which is formed the means for clamping the Hexible member and handle together.
In the drawings 6 is a wire screen suitably shaped and bound at its top and side edges, in the usual manner, to form the flexible member of the device. 7 indicates generally the handle to which the flexible member is fastened by means of a clamping member 8.
As shown in Fig. 4, the wire screen 6 is shaped at its lower edge to form a pair of anchoring tongues 9. In Order to provide means to which these tongues may be fastened the handle has a pair of divergent arms 10 each comprising a laterally extending portion 10a, around which the tongues 1 may be looped, and a longitudinally extending portion 10b extending upwardly from the portion 10a along the side edges of the screen 1. i
The clamping member 8, for fastening the ilexible member of the device to the handle, is preferably formed from an integral piece of sheet metal 11 (Fig. 5), doubled upon itself to'form two opposite' side plates-11n and 11b and shaped at its lower folded edge as at 12 so as to clamp the tongues9 of the screen firmly around the transversely extending portion 10PM of the arms 10. The platella of the clamping member is made of a length substantially equal to the width of the flexible member while the plate 11b is made somewhat longer to form end portions 13 which may be bent around the longitudinal arm portions 10b and lapped over the ends of the plate 11a. Said portions 13, when bent around the arm portions 10b, are also shaped, as at llt, to clamp the side edges of the flexible member snugly against said arm portions 10b.
In order to receive the arms 10, the blank sheet of metal l1 is provided along the line of its fold with a slot 15, and portions are cut away as at 16, at opposite ends of the sheet, so that when folded, -sharp corners are eliminated. It will be understood that the shaping of the plates 11a and 11b around the arm portions 10a and 10b, as at 12 and 14, respectively, is accomplished by compressing the plates by means of a suitable tool.
It will be apparent that I have provided a fly-killer of a very advantageous and practical character. Not only is the construction extremely simple so that the cost of manufacture is reduced to a minimum, but the method of mounting the flexible member is such as to positively prevent it from working loose from its support thus rendering the device very efficient and durable.
I claim as my invention:
1. A ily-killer having, in combination, a fiexible member, a handle having a pair of arms each comprising a transversely extending portion and a longitudinally extending portion, and a clamping device formed from a single piece of metal folded upon itself and shaped so as to secure the lower end of said flexible member to said handle with the lower edge of said member clamped around the transversely extending portions of the arms and the side edges of the member engaging the longitudinally extending portions of the arms, said device having an opening in its folded edge for receiving the arms of the handle.
2. A fly-killer having, in combination, a flexible member having a pair of tongues at its lower end, a handle having a pair of arms each comprising aV transversely extending portion and a longitudinally extending portion, and a clamping device comprising a pair of plates compressed so as to clamp the lower end of the iexible Vmember to said arms with the tongues of said member bent around the transversely extending portions of the arms and the side edges of the mem- `ber engaging'the longitudinally extending portions of the arms.
3. Vlin a y-killer, a flexible member, a handle having a transversely extending portion and a longitudinally extending portion, and a metallic device shaped to clamp the lower end` of said'fiexible member to said handle with the lower edge of saidA member engaging the transversely extending portion of the handle and the side edges of the member engaging thev longitudinally extending portion of the handle.
handle, a flexible striking member having at its lower edge a pair of tongues adapted toV be bent around said arms, and a clamping device inthe form of a single sheet of metal slotted to receive the handle and bent to form clamping plates on opposite sides of the'i'lexible member, the said plates being bent at their opposite side Vedges into overlapping relation and clamped together. c
In testimony whereof I have hereunto set my hand.,V n MARIUS Z. WOHLHUTER,
