UNITED STATES PATENT oEEroE.
OSCAR H. LAY, OF ANCT-rIQB-AGE, TERRITORY OF ALASKA.
COMBINATION-TOOL.
Application filed May To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, 'OsoAn H. LAY, a citizen of the United States of America, residing at Anchorage, Territory of Alaska, have invented certain new and useful improve ments in Combination-Tools, of which the following is a specification.
The invention has relation to tools, and aims to provide a tool adapted for a variety of work and embodying a small number of parts as compared with the range of usefulness of the tool, since it embodies elem nts whereby the tool may be used as a lace leather cutter, edging knife, rivet set rivet header, screw-driver, and punch.
The drawing illustrates a preferred embodiment of the invention. However, it is to be understood that. in adapting the same to meet different conditions, various changes in the form, proportion, and minor details of construction may be resorted to without departing from the nature of the invention as claimed hereinafter.
Referring to the drawing,
Figure 1 is a side view of a tool embodying the invention;
Fig. 2 is an edge view thereof;
Fig. 3 is a perspective view of the tool having the members spread to show more clearly the detailed construction; and
Fig. d is a perspective view of the lace cut ter and binder for holding the side members or blades against the intermediate blade or member.
Corresponding and like parts are referred to in the following description and indicated in the several views of the drawing by like reference characters.
The tool comprises a middle member or blade 1 and side members or blades 2 and 3, the several members being connected by means of a fastening 4 which consists of a bolt passing through openings in one end of the members 2 and 3 and a longitudinal slot 5 in the middle member 1. In this manner either one of the members 2 and 3 may be brought into operative position so as not to be interfered with by the. other member. The slot 5 admits of longitudinal adjustment of the member. 1 between the members 2 and 3, whereby provision is had for using the member 1 as a stop or guide in connection with either one or both of the members 2 and 3.
The member 3 has its free end reduced and stepped, as indicated at 6 to provide Specification of Letters Patent.

portions of different widths. The reduced and stepped end 6 constitutes a punch for forming openings of different sizes in leather belts and st *aps. A notch 7 is formed in an edge portion of the member 3 to re ceive a blade 8 which constitutes a cutter.
The member 2 has an end portion sharpened to produce a knife blade 9 for ed ing leather or performin any work for which a knife blade is adapted. A notch 10 is fo'med in an edge portion of the member 2 in position to register with the notch 7 and is likewise designed to receive the blade 8.
The blade 8 has two cuts or notches 11 formed in an edge thereof and extending inward in parallel relation. The cuts or notches 11 are adapted to receive the members 2 and 3 when the blade 8 is fitted in the notches or cuts 7 and 10. The blade 8 is of a length corresponding to the width of the members 2 and 3. Edge portions of the blade 8 roject beyond the outer sides of the members 2 and 3, as indicated most clearly in Fig. 2. The blade 8 acts as a binder to hold the members 2 and 3 close against the sides of the intermediate member 1. The end of the blade 8 opposite that provided with the notches or cuts 11 has an intermediate portion beveled, as indicated at 12 to provide a cutting edge which comes between the members 2 and 3 when the blade 8 is in position. The distance between the inner end of the member 1 and the cutting edge of the blade 8 determines the width of the lace when cutting a strap into strips. By adjusting the member 1 between the mem here 2 and 3 the distance between the blade 8 and the inner end of the member 1 may be varied so that laces or strips of different widths may be out as required. It will thus be understood that the member 1 acts as a gage or stop for regulating and determining the cut.
Cross-heads 13 are provided at opposite edges of the member 1 at the inner end thereof and the projecting ends are adapted to engage the edges of the members 2 and 3 and prevent movement thereof when the fastening 4 is tightened. It will thus be understood that the fastening 4 is relieved of the strain which ordinarily would be re quired to hold the blades 2 and 3 in alinement with the member 1. When it is required to throw one of the members 2 or 3 out of operative position the fastening 4 is loosened sufliciently to admit of the blade clearing the projecting ends of the cross heads 13 on the same side therewith, after which the blade is turned so as to project in the direction of the outer end of the member l. The fastening A is now retightened to hold the parts in the adjusted position. The member 1 may be adjusted to regulate the depth of action of the punch 6 or the projecting portion of the knife blade 9, as will be readily understood.
The outer end of the-member l is formed with a screw-driver point 141: and has an .opening 15 and a depression 16 contiguous to the screw-driver point. The opening 15 provides a rivet set, whereas the depression 16 is made rounding so as to act as a swage or upset for the projecting end of the rivet in a manner well understood.
The foregoing description and the drawing have reference to what may be considered the preferred or approved form of my invention. It is to be understood that I may make such changes in construction and arrangement and combination of parts, materials, dimensions, &c., as may prove expedient and fall within the scope of the appended claims.
Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to se cure by Letters Patent is 1. A tool of the character specified, com prising a middle and side members, the middle member being adjustable longitudinally, means connecting the three members,
and a blade engaging the side members and spanning the space formed between them, the distance between said blade and the in termediate member being adjustable.
2. A tool of the character specified, comprising a middle and side members, the middle member being longitudinally adj ustable and the side members having edge portions notched, and a blade having an edge portion notched to receive the side members and the latter in turn having the notches thereof receivin the blade.
3. A tool of t e character specified, com prising a middle member having a longitudinal slot and spaced lateral projections, side members placed against the middle member and between the lateral projections thereof and having edge portions notched, a fastening connecting the three members and passing through the longitudinal slot of the middle member, and a blade having an edge portion notched to receive theside members and entering the notches in the edge portions thereof, said blade having the edge portion opposite that in which the notches are formed beveled to a cutting edge which extends across the space formed between the said side members.
In testimony whereof I afiiX my signature in presence of two witnesses.
OSCAR LAY.
