Description

G. E. NELSON.
PORTABLE PLATFORM.
APPLICATION FILED JAN. 29, 1919,
INVENTOR BY v GUST E. NELSON, OF KINGSBURG, CALIFORNIA.
PORTABLE PLATFORM.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Feb. 17, 1920.
Application filed January 29, 1919. Serial No. 273,728.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, Gosr E. NELsoN, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of the town of Kingsburg, in the county of Fresno and State of California, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Port-able Platforms, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to a portable plat form which is intended more especially for use in orchards for the purpose of pruning the trees and picking the fruits therefrom,
the object being to have a platform which can readily be transported from. one tree. to another in'an orchard, and easily ad justed so that the platform will extend entirely around the tree, and in pruning the tree or in gathering the fruit therefrom the branches of the tree on all sides are equally and readily accessible. I accomplish these and other objects hereinafter set fort-h by means of the device hereinafter described and illustrated in the accompanying drawing which is hereby made a part of this specification, and in which drawing Figure 1 is a perspective view of the platform when encircling a tree; Fig. 2 is a side view of the device when folded up ready for transportation; Fig. 3 is a detail view of the combination horizontal swivel and vertical hinge fastening the cross supports to the top of the truck.
In said drawing I have shown an ordinary two-wheeled truck having a main body B, supported on two legs C and D at one end, and standards E and F at the other end which carry an axle G and wheels H and I. K is a tongue extending from the axle G between legs (l and D to which it is rigidly attached by means of a cross piece which also acts as a brace for legs G and D. L and M are cross supports which are hinged to blocks L and Iv These hinges permit vertical movement. The blocks L and M are each attached by a round bolt L and M to the main body B so the blocks and the cross supports L and M can have a horizontal movement with the bolts L and M as the swivels or centers. P and R are vertical supports or legs hinged to cross supports L and M at the ends opposite the swivels L and M These vertical supports are approximately C and D and are intended to hold up the cross supports L and M. The blocks L of the same height as the legs and L are of such size that .the cross supports L and M are held far enough above the main body B that the legs P and R can be folded between the cross supports and the main body. 0 is an ordinary plank which can be held at one end by means of a swivel bolt 0 In transporting this plat form the plank O can be turned on swivel 0 so it is in the same vertical plane with cross support L, the legs P and R can be swung under the cross supports L and M which supports can be turned on swivels L and M so they are parallel with the body 13, thus placing the whole of the platform in a,compact and convenient form for transporting. This platform can then be easily wheeled to a tree which it is desired to prune or from which fruit is to be gathered, and by adjusting the platform as shown in Fig. 1 an. operator can walk entirely around the tree on the elevated platform to perform such work.
I claim as new and ask for Letters Patent upon 1. In a portable platform, the combination of a main platform supported on wheels, cross supports attached by means of swivel hinges at each end of the main platform, vertical supports at the outer end of said cross supports, and an auxiliary movable platform attached by means of a swivel bolt to one of said cross supports and long enough to extend to the other cross support substantially as described and for the purposes set forth.
2. In a portable rectangular platform, the combination of a main portion of said platform supported on a carriage, cross supports, each of said cross supports being hinged to a block to permit said cross s11 ports to have a vertical adjustment, one of said blocks being attached to each end of the main portion of the platform by means of a swivel bolt so that it will permit the cross supports to have a rotary horizon tal movement, means for supporting the outside ends of the cross supports and an auxiliary portion of the platform hinged by a swivel bolt to one of said cross supports and of such length that it can reach to the other, substantially as described.
