To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, ALFONSO CoRTnLLA, a subject of' the King of Italy, resident of Nice, France, (and Whose post-office address is No. 172 Leyden St, East Boston, Mass.,) have invented an Improvement in Combined Sound Reproducing and Moving Picture -Machines, of which the following description, in connection with the accompanying drawings, is a specificatiomdike characters on the drawings representing like parts.
This invention relates to combined sound reproducing and moving picture machines and aimsto provide a novel combination of a sound reproducing or talking machine having a plurality of preferably. continuously operative record carrying members carrying successively operative records,
either disk or cylinder, and a moving'picturemachine whereby a plurality of records may be played without substantial interruption in synchronism with a suitable series of ictures toprovide a reproduction of any desired length within the capacity of the picture machine.

For both unlocking the record carrying member 17 from the turn-table and its shaft, and for supporting the same while in unlocked or inoperative position, I have provided the following novel construction. Just below the lower end of each shaft 9, Figs.
1, 3, is a pintle and record supporting member 22, which normally supports the .lower end of the pintle when in inoperative position with its tooth 21 raised above and out of'engagement with the crown teeth 20, as at the right hand end of Fig. 1; but which,

at the left, see Fig. 1, is dropped somewhat below the end of the pintle, permitting the latter to drop down in the shaft 9 and the tooth 21'to engage the crown teeth 20, Fig. 7, and lock the record 16 to its turn-table 1'5 and shaft 9, and to cause it to rotate'with said turn-table and shaft.

The controlling means for the shifting mechanism herein comprises bellcrank locking and unlocking levers 27, Figs. 3, 4, 6 pivoted to suitable supports 23 on the table 1, the short arm of each lever being bent or otherwise adapted to engage a catch 28, on the rear face of the lever 24 while the long arm of the lever is extended to form a cam surface 29 adapted to be engaged by a lever tripping member 30 de ending from and adapted to be actuated by the sound arm, see Fig. 2, in dotted lines, to be more fully described presently.- These levers 27 are each normally retained in looking position by means of a leaf spring 31 secured thereto and seated upon the table 1.
For depressing and locking one end of the lever 24 instantly upon the unlocking and raising of the opposite end of said lever and thus instantly shifting the records, I have invented the following novel mechanism, forming also part of the shifting lever controlling means. On the front face of the lever 24, see Figs. 3, 4, 5, near each end is secured a bracket 32 and to the brackets are pivoted rearwardly extended lever positioning members 33, 33*. These lever positioning members 33, 33 are somewhat narrower at their rear ends than at their forward 33, and acting as a stop on that side of. the
member 34 for the same.
' Between said members 33, 33, on the member 23 are pivoted two upright reversing levers 39, 39, each suitably positioned to be engaged by one of thetrip members 30, 30, immediately after the member '30 delevers 27, 27. These reversinglevers 39, 39, are each pivotally connected by a connecting rod 40 with the lever positioning member 33 or 33" at the opposite end of the lever 24, and are each normally retained in position by a spring 41, secured thereto and to the member 23 -or any convenient support. For

Obviously this operation of the talking machine may be continued without any noticeable interruption of the reproduction of the record as lon as desired, and com-, pletely overcoming the objectionable delays and interruptions hitherto occasioned by changing the records.
By my improved construction it is practicable for the first time, so far as I am aware, a whole opera, oratono, or any long musical production and the accompanying pictures at one time without inter-' ruption, the wholebeing in complete synchronism of picture chronism. This is possible because the turntables are always in synchronism with the picture machine and each turn-table is automatically and mechanically thrown {into operation by' the mechanism operating in connection turn-table. By this means dependence upon special synchronizing means governed by the motion of the picture machine, or synchronizing means separately operated, with its accompanying avoided. Where it wouldotherwise be necessary to synchroniie the movement of the record-carrying member with the picture machine after each record were laced in operation, it is, by means ofmy improved construction, necessary only to construction, it may bepossible to vary the same in manygspects within the spirit of the invention il-IldTlYGsCGP of the appended claims.

The combination with a moving pic ture taking or reproducing machine, of a sound recording or reproducing machine comprising a plurality of automatically, successively rotatable record carrying members, a common driving shaft for'the picture machine and record carrying members, and means operated by the shaft for positively throwing each of the record carrying members into and out of operation in repeated cycles.
2. In a machine of the class described the combination with a picture taking or reproducing machine, of a sound recording or reproducing machine comprising a plurality of automatically, successively operable, movable disk record carrying members,
means for effecting the successive operation of said diskrecords in repeated cycles, and a driving shaftpositively connected to both said machines whereby complete synand sound reproductions of a plurality of successively operated records is effected for an indefinite time.

The combination with a picture taking or reproducing machine, of a sound recording or reproducing machine comprising a plurality of turntables successively operating record carrying members vertically adjustable relative thereto, and inoperatively positioned relative to the turntables when in raised position, and, means including a plurality of sound boxes, needles, and records effecting automatic, successive, operative positioning of the record carrying mem bers relative to the turntables, in repeated cycles, a synchronising operative connection between said machines.

The combination with a picture takin or reproducin machine, of a sound recor 1 ing or repro ucing machine comprising a plurality of simultaneously opera'tlng record carrying members, shafts therefor, successivel operative record carrying pintles for holding the records 1n inoperatlve position; a plurality of sound arms, means for holding the pintles in operative engagement with the simultaneously'operating carrying members; record shifting means inclu mg a driving shaft connecting the talking and pic ture machines, and a record shifting lever having pintle supports and leverpositioning members thereon; controlling means including reversing levers for the positioning leshaft connecting the picture and sound reproducing machines, a record shifting lever having pintle supports and lever positioning members thereon, and catches on the positioning members; and controlling means including reversing levers connecting the po-. sitioning members, lever tripping members on the sound arms to actuate the reversing levers, and locking levers actuated by the trippin members.
17 The combination with a picture taking or reproducin machine, of a sound recording or repro ucing machine comprising a plurality of simultaneously operative record carrying members, shafts therefor, successivel operative record carrying pintles for holding the records in inoperative position, means for holding the pintles in operative engagement with. the successively operable carrying members, and a plurality of sound arms; record shifting means including a driving shaft connecting the talking and picture machines, a record shifting lever having pintle supports and lever positioning members thereon; and catches on the positioning members; and controlling means including reversing levers connected with the positioning members, lever tripping members on the sound arms, lockin levers for the shifting lever actuated by t e tripping members prior to actuation 'of revers-- ing levers, and lever shifting disks 'on the drivin shaft to actuate the shifting lever. 18. 7 he combination'with a picture taking or reproducing machine, of a sound recording or reproducing machine comprising a plurality of simultaneously operative record carrying members, hollow. shafts therefor, record carrying pintles on the shafts for holding the records in inoperatiye position, means for lockin the records to the pintles, means for hol ing the pintles in operative engagement with the simultaneously operative record carrying members; a plurality of sound arms, record shifting means including a driving shaft having lever shifting disks, the shaft connecting the talking and picture machines, a record shifting lever having pintle supporting means and lever positioning means thereon including catches engaged by the lever shifting disks and springs for the catches; and controlling means including reversing levers, lever tripping members therefor and records carriedby said members in repeated cycles, and synchronizing connections between said moving picture machine and said sound reproducing mechanism.

In a machine of the class described, the combination of a moving picture taking or reproducingmachine, a sound recording or reproducing mechanism comprising a plurality of simultaneously operable recordcarrying members, means for effecting automatically the successive operation of the records carried by said members in repeated cycles, and gear connection between said movingv picture machine and said sound reproducing mechanism effecting synchronism.

In a machine of the class described, the combinationof a moving picture taking or reproducing machine, a sound recording or reproducing mechanism comprising aplurality of simultaneously operable recordcarrying members, means for effecting automatically the successive operation of the records carried by said members in repeated cycles, and a common driving shaft geared .to both said moving picture machine and said sound reproducing mechanism thereby producing synohronism thereof.

In a: machine of the class described, the combination of a moving picture taking or reproducing machine, sound recording or reproducing mechanism comprising a plurality of record-carrying members, means for successively separating the operative connections between said members and the corresponding records, and for successively restoring said --operative connections and syn chronizing connections between said moving picture machine and said sound reproducing mechanism; I

In a machine of the class described, the combination of a moving picture taking or reproducing machine, a sound recording or reproducing mechanism comprlsmg a plurality of record carrying members, means for successively separating the operative connections between said membersand the corresponding records, and for successively restoring said operative connection, means for effecting said separation and restoration in successive cycles, and synchronizing connections between said moving picture machine and said sound reproducing mechanlsm,
24. In a machine of the class described,
the combination of a moving picture taking or reproducing machine, .a sound recording or reproduclng mechanism, comp-rising a plurality of record-carrying members, means for s uccessively lifting the records from the carrying members, means for successively depressing records 1nto operative relatlon to ing and depressing in successive cycles, and synchronlzmg connections between said moving picture machine and said sound reroducin mechanism.
25. The combination with a: picture taking or reproducing machine, of a sound record- 'ing or reproducing machine comprising simultaneously moving record carrying gmembers, balanced successively operating record carrying members operated'thereby,
means for automatically locking the latter members alternately tothe former members, laterally movable soundarms, upwardly moving record shifting mechanism operated thereby to raise the successively operable carrying members from the simultaneously movable members including a shifting lever, positioning members thereon, a shaft having catch carrying disks thereon, to engage said positioning members and controlling means including reversing levers operated by the sound arms to control the action of the disks said members, means for effecting said liftupon the catches, said shaft having a synchroniking operative connection with said machines.

The combination of amoving picture taking or producing machine with a sound recording or reproducing machine having a plurality of record carrying members, means for holding a record in inoperative relation thereto, automatic means acting successively to effect operative relation between a record and a carrying-member in repeated cycles, and a synchronizing operative connection between said machines.

The combination of a moving picture 4 taking or producin machine with a sound recording or repro ucmg machlne having-a plurality of record carrying members, auto- -matic means for successively throwing a record into operative relation thereto in repeated cycles, and a synchronized operative connection, between said machines.

The combination with a motion picture taking or producing machine of a sound recording or reproducing machine com rising a plurality of record carrying members, means for inoperatively positioninga record relative thereto, automatic means for successively looking a record in operative rela v tion to a carrying member in repeated cycles,
and a synchronizing operative connection between said machines."

The combination with a motion picture taking or producing machine of a sound recording or reproducing machine comprising simultaneously operative carrying members 15, shafts 9 therefor, record carrying pintles 17 therein for'carrying the records in inoperative position, record locking 11 connecting said machines and having the disks 42' thereon, record shifting lever 24:
with the pintles supports 22, lever positioning members 33-433, and catches 34 thereon adapted to be engaged by the lever shifting'disks 42; and controlling means in'cluding reversing lever 39, connected with the positioning members 33-33, lever tripping members 30 on the sound arms, locking levers 29 for the shifting levers actuated by the tripping members prior to' the actuation of the reversing levers. v
