To all whom it may concern: r
Be it known that I, ALEXANDER H. HAND- I LAN, J12, a citizen of the United States of America, a resident of the city of St. Louis, in the State of Missouri, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Adjustable Signal-Lamp Supports, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification.
My invention relates to an adjustable support for use upon staffs of railway signaling the invention having for its object to provide a lamp support which may be adjusted in order that the beams of light may be accurately and properly dispersed in alinement with a stretch of railroad track.
Figure I is a plan or top view of my adjustable lamp support, the bottom rim of the signal lamp attached thereto being shown in cross section.
Fig. II is an elevation, partly in section, of the lamp support and the lower portion of a signal lamp mounted thereon shown fitted to a staff for supporting the holder.

Fig. IV is a perspective of the socket member of my adjustable lamp support.

My adjustable lamp support is intended to be used upon the rotatable staffs of switch stands, or upon any other upright member, whether said member is located adjacent to the ground or in an elevated position, as, for example, in a signal tower. The staff is provided with a tapering upper end to which the primary member of my adjustable lamp support is secured.
In the form of adjustable lamp supporting device shown in Figs. I to IV, inclusive, 1 designates a primary section of cylindrical form having a socket opening 2 therein, preferably of non-circular shape in cross section to fit the non-circular upper end of the staff. At the exterior of the primary section 1 are distance ribs or protuberances 3 which preferably extend vertically along the said section and, in the wall of said primary section, is a screw threaded hole 4.
section including B designates the adjustable secondary section of my lamp supporting device, this a sleeve 5 loosely surrounding the primary section 1 in contact with the protuberanoes 3 thereon, thereby providing for a limited contact between the interior of said sleeve and the cylindrical primary section to reduce the frictional engagement of said parts, in order that the secondary section may be readily turned on said primary section. Arms 6, extending laterally from the sleeve 5, terminate at their outer ends in wings 7 to which the base flange of a signal lamp C may be secured. Any suitable means for attaching the lamp to these arms, such as bolts 8, may be utilized. The sleeve 5 of the secondary section B is preferablyalso provided with wings 9 which serve to enlarge the base of the section to afi'ord a more substantial foundation for the lamp when set on the ground. In the wall of the sleeve 5 is a transverse slot 10 through which a set screw 11 extends into the screw hole 4 in the primary section 1. The head of this screw is adapted to be brought into impingement with the exterior wall of the sleeve 5 to hold said sleeve from rotation.
It will be understood that the sleeve 5 may be easily turned on the primary section 1 when no restraint is offered to restrict the turning movement, but that when the set screw 11 is adjusted inwardly to a sufficient degree to cause its head to exert a binding action against the sleeve 5, said sleeve in the lamp supported thereby will be held stationary. Therefore, when any adjustment of the lamp is necessary, it is only necessary to loosen the set screw 11 and turn the secondary section B and the lamp C as permitted by the slot 10 in the sleeve 5, and after the desired adjustment has been obtained, again tighten the set screw so that it will resume its holding influence.
In the modification shown in Figs. V to VII, inclusive, the primary section 1- is formed with a socket 2 adapted to be fitted to a staff A, and is provided at its upper end with a head 2 The lamp receiving section B comprises a head 5 seated on the head of the primary section 1 and is provided with vertical slots 10 which receive set screw l1 seated in the head of the primary section 1*. In this modified form the secondary or lamp receiving section is provided with a stem 5 adapted to enter a socket at the base of the lamp to be supported. The screws 11 serve to hold the secondary or lamp receiving section 13 from movement when said screws are tightened to impinge against the head of said section, but when the screws are loosened said section may be adjusted as permitted by the slots 10 after which the adjustment is retained by again tightening said set screws.
I claim: 7
1. A signal lamp supporting device comprising a primary section, a secondary lamp receiving section rotatably fitted to said primary section, one of said sections being provided with a slot, and a set screw'extending 7 through said slot and engaging the other section whereby the sections may be held from rotation relative to each other.
2. A signal lamp supporting device comprising a primary section, a secondary lamp receiving section rotatabl fitted to said primary section, said secon ary section being provided with a slot, and a set screw extending through said slot into engagement with said primary section whereby said secondary section may be held from rotation relative to said; primary section.
3. A signal lamp supporting device comprising a cylindrical primary section having protuberances thereon, a secondary lamp receiving section having a sleeve surrounding saidprimary section in contact with'said protuberances, and means for adjustably securing said sleeve to said primary section.
