Description

A. WIGHT.
Improvement in Street-Car Axle-Boxes.
N0. 133,073. Patented Nov.12,1872.
INVENTUH.
ANDREW 'WIGHT, OF ST. LOUIS, MISSOURI.
IMPRQVEMENT IN STREET-CAR AXLE-BOXES.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 133,073, dated November 12, 1872.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, ANDREW WIGHT, of
the city and county of St. Louis, and State of Missouri, have invented a certain Improvement in AXlG-BOX6S of Street-Cars, of which the following is a specification:
My invention consists in forming the case of the axle-box with a chamber that contains a dust-shield capable of moving vertically and horizontally with the axle. The shield is made preferably of wood, and is made to closely fit the axle so asto prevent the entrance of dust into the case.
In the drawing, Figure 1 is a perspective view, showing the dust-shield and face-plate detached; and Fig. 2 is a longitudinal section, showing the parts in proper position.
A is the box-case, having a groove, B, on each side to receive the guide-ribs of the pedestal. An the inner end of the case is a chamber, 0, formed to receive a shield, D, preferably of wood, and having a circular orifice, E,
closely fitting the axle F. G is a face-plate, by which the shield is held in place, the said plate having a beveled edge, f, fitting tightly against the shoulder a of the case so as to exclude dust. The shield D is free to move in all directions (but not to rotate) in the chamber O, and accommodates its position to the axle at all times, forming a secure protection to the case A from the entrance of dust. The plate G is secured byscreW-bolts g.
I claim as my invention-- In a street-car axle-box, the movable shield D having free play in the dust-chamber, and closely fitting on the axle-spindle, in combination with the chamber 0 and face-plate G having free play on the axle, and provided with a beveled edge, f, fitting tightly against the shoulders a of the case, all arranged, constructed, and operated as set forth.
Witnesses ANDREW WIGHT.
