CECIL HAMELIN TAYLOR, OF DETROIT, MICHIGAN.
INTERNAL-COMBUSTION ENGINE.
Application led April 27, 1918.
To all whom t may concern Be it known that I, Gnou. HAMELIN TAY- Lon, a citizen of the United States, residing at Detroit, county of Wayne, State of Michigan, have invented a certain new and useful Improvement in Internal-Combustion Engines, and declare the following to be a full, clear, and ,exact description of the saine, such as will ena-ble others skilled in the art to which it pertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, which form a part of this specification.
My invention relates to internal combustion engines and an object of my improvements is to provide an improved arrangement of the valve-ports and passages leading thereto.
I secure this object in the device illustrated in the accompanying' drawings in Which;
Figure l is a plan view of the removable head of multi-cylinder engine.
F ig. 2 is an elevation looking from the right of Fig. l showing also a portion of the upper end of the cylinder casting.
Fig. 3 is an elevation of the part shown in Fig. l.
Fig. 4C is a plan view of the cylinder casting with the c ylinder head removed.
Fig. 5 is a sectional elevation on the broken line E-E Fig. l.
c is a cylinder casting and t is a removable cylinder head. The cylinders are cast cfa bloc and there are four cylinders contem-plated in the device shown. d is a projection from the center of the cylinder head which extends over the side of the engine and has a horizontal machined surface at its outer end to which the carbureter c (Fie: Q) is secured.
c is the intake passage which enters the cylinder head at the horizontal surface on the outer end of the projection d, rises up into the cylinder head, extends inward toward the center thereof, and branches into two forks e2 es. Each of these forks turns downward and opens4 in a passage c4 through the machined surface forming a part of the lower and engaging surface of the cylinder head.
The cylinder head is hollowed out below to form an extension of the cylinders at c and the space c5 for the inlet valve g and the exhaust valve h which are respectively actuated through valve stems g2 and h2.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Feb. 10, 1920.
Serial No. 231,156.
j j y' j are the cylinders formed in the casting a. Between the pairs of cylinders there is a downwardly extending passage f which opens upward through the machined uniting upper surface of the cylinder casting, extends horizontally in said casting and then opens upward in the intake port f2 to the space e5 in the cylinder head. f3 is a port opening from the space e5 to the eX- haust discharge passage f4.
When the cylinder head Z) is placed upon the casting a the opening e4 from the passages @2 and ci register with the passages ,f f in the casting a thus forming a continuous intake port through the passage e, the forks e2 c3, the passage f, the port f2 and into the space c5 which communicates with the cylinder j around the wall of the part c4 of the intake passage.
By reference to Fig. 5 it will be seen that the intake passage, or the branches c2 c3 thereof, pass over the cylinders and are separated therefrom by a common wall which forms the lower wall of said passage.
vWhat l claim is:
l. In an internal combustion engine, the combination of a cylinder casting having a passage opening downward therein and turning and again opening upward, a cylinder head having an intake passage therein opening downward through its lower surface and adapted to register and forni a continuous passage with the downwardly opening passage in said casting, said casting having a cylinder formed therein, said head being provided with a concavity opening upward from its lower surface adapted to communicate with said cylinder and with the upward opening from the passage in said casting, andan inlet valve controlling the opening from the passage in said casting.
2. ln an internal combustion engine, the combination of a cylinder casting having a passage opening downward therein and turning and again opening upward, a cylinder head having an intake passage therein opening downward through its lower surface and adapted to register and form a continuous passage with the downward opening passage. in said casting', said casiting having a cylinder formed therein, said head being provided with a concavity opening upward from its lower surface adapted to communicate with said cylinder and with the upward opening from the passage ...awwwamwwlll in said casting, and an inlet valve controlling the opening from Vthe passage in said casting, a second passage in said casting opening downward from the concavity in the cylinder head and outward to forni an exhaust passage, and an eXhaust valve controlling said second passage.
3. In an internal combustion engine, a cylinder casting having cylinders therein, a separable head from said cylinder, said cylinder casting having an upper joining surface and said cylinder head having a lower joining surface, a passage in said cylinder head opening downward through the joining surface thereon, a passage in said casting opening downward from the joining surface thereon and forming a continuation of the passage in the cylinder head, the passage in' said casting opening upward, means for connecting the upward opening portion of the passage in the casting with the cylinder, and a valve controlling'the upwardly opening passage in said casting.
4. In an internal' combustion engine, a cylinder casting having cylinders therein, a separable head from said cylinder, said cylinder casting having an upper joining surface and said cylinder head having a lower joining surface, a passage in said cylinder head opening downward through said joining surface thereon, a passage in said casting opening downward from the joining surface thereon and forming a continuation of the passage in the cylinder head, the passage in said casting opening upward, means for connecting the upward opening portion of the passage in the casting with the cylinder, and a valve controlling the upwardly opening passage in said casting, said means consisting in a cavity having a portion of its wall in common with the intake passage.
5. In an internal combustion engine, the combination of a cylinder casting having a passage opening downward therein and turning and again opening upward, a cylinder head having an intake passage therein communicating with the passage in said cylinder casting to forni a continuous passage therewith, said casting having a cylinder formed therein, the passage in said casting communicating with said cylinder, and an inlet valve coi'itrolling the opening from the passage in said casting to said cylinder.
In testimony whereof I sign this specification.
