To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that. I, WVAL'rnR BROWN, a citizen of the United States, residing at Racine, in the county of Racine and State of Visconsin, have invented a certain new and useful Improvement in Magneto-Machines, of which the following is a full, clear, concise, and exact description, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification.
My invention relates to an improvement in magneto electric machines, and briefly stated the objects of my invention are to produce a more serviceable and durable device of this class that may be economically manufactured.
The machine herein described is characterized by the rigid and moisture proof nature of its stator elements, as well as by the simple and extremely rigid construction of its rotor or armature.
In the accompanying drawings illustrating my. invention:
Figure 1 is a view of a rotary low tension magneto, parts of the device being shown in section and other parts in elevation to more clearly illustrate the construction;
Fig. 2 is a vertical sectional view taken on the line 22 of Fig. 1;
Fig. 3 is a horizontal sectional view on the line 33 of Fig. 1; and
Fig. 4 is a perspective view of the mag neto frame. 7
Similar characters of reference refer to taken similar parts throughout the several views.
Referring first to Fig. 1, I have illustrated a magneto frame 9, which is a die casting and so conformed a to inclose pole pieces 10, 10. It will beseen that the pole pieces and magneto frame are in effect one, for the reason that the frame is cast around and in contact with the pole pieces. The frame 9 carries an end plate 11, provided with a bearing 12 disposed centrally with respect to the end late. The frame also carries on each side t ereof a shelf 14 and side pieces 15, 15 arranged to support field magnets 16, 16, around which a metallic band 17 is disposed and secured on either side of the base 19 carried by the frame. The upper portion of the frame carries a hollow boss 21, into which is inserted a combination brush holder and conductor terminal clip, as will be presently describec. The end plate 11 has contained within it an oiling device 22, which consists of a wad of cotton material. soaked with lubricating oil, the oil being inserted into the device at 23. A ball seating against the wall surrounding the aperture 23 is ield in place by a spring, and by this means dust is prevented from entering the oiling device Carried on the opposite end of the magneto frame is an end plate 25 containing a bearing 26 and an oil ing device 27, which is the same in construction as the one just described.
Journaled in the bearings 12 and 26 is a shaft 29 of a rotor or armature structure of novel and extremely rugged construction. The shaft, which is formed in one solid piece, is tapered and threaded at one end to facilitate connection therewith of the usual driving gear. Disposed upon the shaft 29 is a coil carrying core consisting of a plurality of substantially I- sha ped laminae 30, 30. each of which comprises two segmental end portions conformed to cooperate with the concave pole faces, each of said laminae also comprising an intermediate portion connecting the said segmental end portions and integral therewith, the said intermediate portions of the lamince 30, 30 being provided with central apertures through which the one piece shaft 29 of the armature structure extends.
Disposed on each side of the segmental ends of the core laminae 30, 30 are the segmental laminae 30, 30 which cooperate with the ends of laminae 30, 30 to provide segmental armature faces of a length substantially equal to the length of the magnet pole faces. Having central apertures through which the shaft 29 extends, and embracing the armature laminae between them are lates 33 and 34, the said plates and laminae eing rigidly connected together by rivets, as most clearly illustrated in Fig. 2.
Although two coils are used in this armature, I have found it desirable to utilize but one piece of wire, for in this way it becomes unnecessary to connect two or more wires, and eliminates the possibility of a break or a poor connection, due to defective joints. It will be noted that each of the armature core laminw 30, 30 is provided with four projections 31, 31 and that inasmuch as the core laminae are disposed side by side, these projections 31, 31 constitute in effect shoulders between whichand the segmental portions of the armature laminae-arc wound the coils 82. The plate 3% functions as a collector platefor the ground connections, as will presently appear. A collector disposed adjacent to but insulatedfroni the rest of the armature is'shown at 36. This collector consists of a ring 37, around which is molded 'a' disk of insulatin material 38 which also has contained within it a metallic hub 39,
disk 38, which hol ow boss extends into an aperture carried by the plate 33. One end of the armature coil is inserted through this hollow boss and attached to the ring forn ing-a part-of the collector, as shown at ll, Fig. 3. The other end of this coil is attached to the plate 342, as shown at 42 (Fig. 3). Carried by the end plate 11 are two sockets each carrying a spring pressed brush 43, 43, engaging-the ground collector plate 34. These brushes are preferably formed of carbon, but may be of any other suitable composition. Inserted within the hollow boss 21 is a combined brush holder and conductor terminal clip 45, of the type shown and'described in my copending application Serial No. 212,580, filed January 19, 1918,
which consists of apiece of flat inetal bent 1nto tubular conformation at one end to con- 7 tain the brush of carbon 4A, and at the other 7 end to constitute a conductor terminal clip as of the type wherein a spring portion cooperates with a resistant portion to grip a conductor. The end comprising the brush holder has molded around it a sleeve of insulatingmaterial 47, so that it is impossible to insert the brush holder and terminal clip As will be seem-the nut 51 is screw-thread ed, and when adjusted the flange of the insulating sleeve is disposed between the nut and boss and securely held. 'If desired a suitable gasket may be placed between the boss and flange to insure a watertight joint.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Let ters Patent of the United States is l. A magneto comprising, in combination with a fr me, field magnets and polepieces therefor, a rotor structure consisting of a one piece shaft, a plurality of'substantially' I -shaped laminae, haying segmental ends, constituting a coil carrying core, said I shaped laminae ha ing central apertures, through which said one piece shaft extends, a plurality of segmental laminae disposed on both sides of each. end of the core formed by said .T-shaped laminae, and with the latter forming segmental armature facesof substantially the same length as the pole pieces, together with means for rigidly securin all of said laminae together.
2. A. magneto comprising a rotor structure consisting of a pair. of spaced disks having central apertures therein, a plurality of substantially I-shaped lamina constituting a coil carrying core, said coil carrying core disposed midwaybetween said dlsks, said I-shaped laminae having central apertures, a plurality of segmental laminae disposed between-said disks and the ends of said core, and with the ends of said core forming segmental armature faces, a one piece shaft eX- tending through the apertures in said disk, and through the apertures in said I-shaped laminae, and rivets rigidly securing said disks and all or" said laminae together.
