To all whom4 it may concern Be it known that I, CLAnaNoI-z F. Grlrf` cnms'r, a citizen o-f the United States, residing at Toledo, county of Lucas, and 5 Stat-e of 0hio .have invented certain new and Auseful Improvements in Brush Holders, of which I declare the following to a full, clear, and exact description.
This invention relates to brush holders for dynamo-electric machines and is a division of my co-pending application, Serial Number 363,127, filed March 4, 1920. It has for an object the construction of 4an improved brush holder and support therefor which shall be simple, eficient, rugged and durable, yet adapted for econogmical construction and not liable to get out of order when subjected to rough trcament.
Further objects of this invention relate construction as will hereinafter appear from the detailed description to follow. I accomplish the objects of my invention in one instance by the devices and means deit is evident that-the same may be varied widely without departing from the scope of the invention as pointed out in the appended claims. A structure constitutin may be the preferred, 1s illustrated in the `accompanying drawings forming a part hereof, in which:

Referring to the drawings, a portion of a generator of -the enclosed type is illustrated in Figs. I and II where the casing or frame 5 has secured to it an end head 6 enclosing the commutator 7 and carrying a bearing supporting member 8. The end head 6 is provided with a circular central opening through which extends a iange 9 in the bearing supporting member 8, the latter serving tocarry the ball bea-ring 10 and being mounted on the outer face of the end to economies of manufacture and details of'.

head with the flange 9 projecting into the interior thereof. Within the endchead is a brush holder ring 12 having a pairkof ears 13 at diametrically opposite points which rest against the inner face of the end head. Bolts 14 pass through slots 15 in these ears and through openings'in the end heads by means of which the brush holder rings are secured to the` end head in proper position. A central flange 16 of the brush holder ring snugly fits over and is piloted by the fiange 9 of the bearing shpport 8.
Two similar main 'brushes 20 and 2l are shown carried by and rigidl secured to the brush holder ring 12 wiiile a brush holder for an auxiliary or third brush .is carried by the ring 12 in a manner to persplit for the purpose of inserting the inner end of a spiral spring 30 whose outer end bears against the brush 31. The studs 28 extend through openings in the ring 12 l and through alining openings 1n two rln 32 and 33 of insulating material which he on opposite sides of the ring 12 and which are, made fast thereto by rivets 34. The
endsv of the studs are shown upset or rivetedI over against washers 36 `whereby the brush holder is firmly secured against the ring 12. By making the openings in the ring 12 somewhat larger than the studs 28 and larger than the corresponding openings in the insulationrings 32 and 33 and vby securing the rings together in fixed relation, the brush holder may be ade uately insulated from the ring 12 without t e use of insulating sleevesvfor the studs.
The brush holder 22 resembles brush holders 20 and 21 .but is constructed to receive a somewhat narrower brush and is also provided with a securing screw 38 for holding it in adjusted position. The studs 28 vof this brush holder extend through an arcuateslot 39 in the ring 12 and through corresponding slots in the two insulating rings 32 and 33 but the studs in this case serve only to position and guide the brush holder, the screw 38 serving to fix its posicommutator Within the limits of the slots.
A split post 40 supports a spiral springr 4L as in the previously described brush holder.
Inasmuch as the invention herein disclosed is susceptible of various other embodiments and as various changes might plate," means bey made in the embodiment set forth, it is to be understood that all matter described above or shown in the accompanying drawing is to be interpreted as illustrative only, and not in a limiting sense.
` Having thus described my invention, what I claim 'as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is:
l. In a d amo-electric machine, a, brush holder meclilalnismi comprising an annular for securing said plate to said machine, a brush holder formed with a pair of integral projections thereon e for securing said. brush holder and plate together,

3. In a dynamo-electric machine, a brush holder mechanism comprising an annular supporting plate 'having strips of insulation Y on opposite sides thereof, an integral brushholder lncluding a brush-engaging portion, a base. and a pair of studs, said plate and strips being apertured to receive 'said studs and said 'studs being riveted over against one of said strips to securelyI bind said brush holder to said plate.
