IMPROVEMENT IN BACKERS FOR JlB-STAVS.
Specification forming part of Letters PatentNo. 132,971, dated November 12, 1872; antedated November To all whom it may concern:-
Be it known that I, THOMAS LYNCH, of Peacedale, in the county of Washington and State of Rhode Island, have invented a certain Improved Backer for the Jib -Stays of Vessels, of which the following in a specification:
This invention relates to the use of wireropes for vessels stays; and consists in putting a block of metal made in the proper shape in the recess made in the boom for the wirerope to pass through, between the rope and end of the recess, to prevent the wire-rope from cutting back and splitting the boom.
Figure 1 shows an elevation of a part of a jib-stay and boom, a portion of the boom being removed to show the position of the backer. Fig. 2 is a front viewof the backer, separate. Fig. 3 is a side view of the backer. Fig. 4 is a cross-section in direction of line .00 m, Fig. 3.
A is the outer end of a jib-boom. O is the wire-rope constituting the jib-stay. D is the backer, which is made of metal, and has a curved face in front, slightly grooved to re ceive the wire-rope or stay, its back being made square to have a good bearing on the wood at the end of the recess in which it is put. The upper end of the backer D projects back so as to form a cap, through which screws or pins are put to hold it in place. A sheave has been put in the recess to take the strain of the jib-stay, but it is objectionable for several reasons. It weakens the boom by making another hole in it; the pin of the sheave is very liable to break from the great strain thrownupon it, and to cut back andsplitthe boom, from the small hearing it has on the wood; it also allows too much freedom of mo- Witnesses:
