In the particular QIITbOdlll'lBflt illustratcd, I show tho pump platform 3, formed by stron planks or timbers, with the vcriioal pump standard or barrel rising therefrom, with the vertical pump plunger actual ting or piston rod :20, projecting above the pump barrel,
Tim pump jack comprises a strong rigid main frame 1, inclining downwardly and laterally from the pump barrel and at its upper and formed with a rigid jaw, usually a V-jaw 1", to fit the pump barrel and adapted to he rigidly clamped thereto by an oppositc or niorablo jaw or cross head 15, and conncrling bolts and nuts 1".
'lhc uppor end of this frame, just in rear of the. jaw I, is formed with an elongated lransvorse bearino 1, receiving the crank shaft 9. of the jacli. The projecting ends of ihis shall receive the large crankgears 5. llach gear 5, is formed with a radial so" rivs of perforations 5, any one of which is formed to receive a wrist or crank pin 17. These perforations permit adjustment of tho crank pins to vary the stroke of the pump actuating rod, as will be readily unclorstood by those skilled in the art.
These crank pins are mounted in the lower ends of the upright pitman 18, which are connected at their upper ends by cross head 19, and this cross head is loosely and opcratively coupled in any suitable manner to the rod 20, as will be understood by those skilled in the art. However, I do not Wish to limit, my invention to any particular nianner'of or means for operatively coupling the pitman or, pitmen to the pump rod 20, nor to the double geared arran ement. as a single gear 5 can be utilized or driving the shaft 9, as those skilled in the art will understand. I
The, outer end of the main frame is forked or bifurcated and formed with a transverse bearing 1', receiving the intermediate shaft 10,'at its projecting ends provided with pina air of s w rdly incl rive shaft 11.
ions 6, meshing with and driving the large crank gears '5.
At its central ortion, the shaft 10, is provided with gear located in the bifurcation of the frame. This gear 7, meshes with and is drivenby the pinion 8, to drive the Intermediate shaft and the crank shaft 9. The
inion 8, is located on the center of the jack The shaft 11-, is mounted in a air of open journal boxes 16, having attac ed top caps. The inion 8, is located between these boxes. T e lower halves of the boxes are formed in the upper ends of Med parallel upwardly and formed arms 1, from the front end of the main frame and integral therewith,
and forming --part of the bifurcated front end of said frame. Both ends of the shaft 11, are extended laterally beyond the vertical planes of the large gears 5, so that either end of the shaft can be directly coupled to the motor shaft as hereinafter explained. The front end of the frame is formed with a pair of vertical arms or legs 1* depending from the front ends of the fork formed by the bifurcation and ha ving: flat vertical front faces and elongated vertical slots.
An upright supporting standard 2, is provided for the front end of the main frame. This standard has a bottom foot or base resting on and bolted or otherwise secured to the pump platform 3. The upper portion of this standard is centrally and vertically slotted to receive the gear T while the rear faces of the two uprights thus formed are fiat and vertical to receive the depending arms or legs 1 and said uprights are formed 'with vertical slots 2 to register with the slots in the legs'i 'lhelcgs If and the standard 2 are rigidly clamped together by bolts 2'2, passing through said slots. The main frame and parts cii'i'ried thereby can bis adjusted vertically approximately aline the operating shaft 11. with the main "shaft of the motor. by loosening the bolts 1 and 2 so that the clamp 1., 15, can slide vertically on the pump standard 4 and so that the depending legs 1 can slide vertically on the front supporting standard 5!. When the jack has been adjusted to the desired elevation, the bolts 1 and 2" are tightened to rigidly lock the main frame to the punip standard a and to the front supportmg standard. and thereby fixedly support ancLhold the jack in the desired position.
In the drawings, I somewhat diagrammatically illustrate an suitable motor or engine Mfor driving t e pumping, jack. 1
' usually emplpy a liquid hydrocarbon, such gasolcne,,engine for this purpose. The
motor is provided with a crank, engine, or-
. other main drive shaft 1-1, usually at both ends projecting beyond the fly wheels and power transmission pulley or pulleys commonly mounted thereon.
This motor is usually located on the pump platform 3 and is arranged beside the pumpm jack with the motor shaft 14 aproximatelyalined with the drive shaft 1 of the jack. As before described, the main frame of the jack is adjusted vertically to bring the shaft 11 to the horizontal motor shaft 1;.
The motor can be arranged on either side of the pumping jack to bring either projecting cm of the motor shaft into more or less end closeproximity with either projectin% of the shaft ll, of the pumping jack. hese' two adjacent approximately alined shaft Q ends are united to rotate together yet so as to permit longitudinal operative disconnection, by a slip coupling} consisting of a spigot member normally fixed on onesha'ft end, and a bell member normally fixed on the other shaft end, with the bell and spigot telescoping or interlocking bet ween the shaft extremities. In the embodiment illustrated,
the spigot (male) member is secured on the pro ecting end of the motor shaft 14 and consists of a strong casting or block forming a socket portion 13 having a longitudinal bore or socket of a size to more or less snugly receive said shaft end and a radial set or clamping screw 13 for rigidly clamping said member to said shaft, and also forming a reduced spigot portion 13 in outward hmg'ftudinal continuation of the socket preferably extends throughout only a portion of the length of the socket member.
The bell member consists of a strong comparatively heavy sleeve-like block or casting 'formiing' a sleeve or collar 12 l ngitudinall receiving the end of the pumping jack sln'i t 11 and adapted to be -normally clamped rigidly thereto by set screw 12" or the like.
This bell .mcmber also forms the enlarged "bell 12" in longitudinal outward continuation of the sleeve portion 12. The bore or socket of this bell. is enlarged with respcct to the bore of sleeve portion 12 which opens thcreinto so that the inner end wall or bottom of the bell is formed by a vertical annular shoulder 12 surrounding the inner end of the bore of the sleeve portion.
The born or soclict of the bell is openat its outer end. and the bell projects from the extremity of shaft 11 a distance approximately equal to the longitudinal length of the spigot plane of the 75 portion is other than circular in cross sec- 105 mwl' niately equal to the disall: ends The bore or nod to longitudinally to more or less snugly notional formation ilu" hell approxh he rrous s rtional for to provide abutting it vi Hod spigot requiring W li-l l together although lwu iludinal scparation of said an; ii VlIV-Lilltlljjltl spigot-abutoi l w hell hole are each arched gimlinallv of said more with ll approximately midfarm thereby forming v flaring; or enlarging from the center of its jun-ill ends. The motor can then he operated independently of the pumping jack.
The motor can again be coupled to the pumping jack for driving the same, by slipping the hell member on shaft 11 until it is operatively interlocked with the spigot, and then securing the hell in operative position by tightening; the set screw 12.
It will he noted that the slip coupling will not interfere with the location of a belt pullay on either end of the motor shaft. and use. of said pulley in driving a belt, even when the motor is coupled to and driving the pumping jack.
It is evident that various changes; modifi' cations, variations and departures might be resorted to without departing from the spirit and scope of my invention and hencol do not Wish to limit the invention to the exact disclosures hereof.
