Be it known that I, FRANK L. Mac- DONAGH, a citizen of the United States, residing in the city of Chic-ago, county of Cook, and State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Filing Systems, of which the following is a sp ecificati on.

This invention relates to improvements in filing systems and refers more particularly to visible systems of the overlapping type.

Among the salient objects of the invention are to provide a construction in which a plurality of holders are adapted to support one or more cards or slips, detachably mounted in the frame to provide a construction in which the holders may be inserted in the frame either by interlocking them before such insertion or by setting them in the frame individually; to provide a construction in which the holders may be formed if desired of paper, metal or other light material; to provide a construction in which the identifying data in each holder is exposed to view; to provide a construction of such a character that the cards when seated in the holders have their upper edges exposed to view and in general to provide an improved construction of the character referred to.

Referring to the drawings, 1 designates as a whole-the frame comprising a flat central web portion 2 having at its opposite edges marginal members 3 and 4 respectively. These marginal members are suitably secured to the central web portion and each is provided with an inwardly facing channel 5, terminating in beads 6, one of which serves to support a pintle rod 7.

Describing now the holders which form the salient features of the invention, these holders may be formed of any suitable material. In the construction shown in the drawings, they are made of paper. They, however, may be made of suitable fabric or may be made of light metal, celluloid r other flexible material. Each of these holders comprises a generally V-shaped portion consisting of a back 10, a front face 11, the latter terminating in a down turned flap 12. It will be noted that the back portion projects above the folded edge 13. The upper edge of the front face 11 and the flap 12 together form a hook shaped portion. When the holders are in assembled position, the hook shaped portion extends over the upper edge of the back portion of the holder just beneath, the folded edge 13 positioning the holder. The holders may be assembled in the manner shown in the drawing either before they are inserted in the ychannel frame member or they may be inwardly inserted in the channel frame member. In either case, the sides of the holders are slipped under the flanges of the channel and thus hold securely in position in the frame. The cards are detachably seated in the holders, the arrangement being such that the upper edges of the cards are exposed. The holders are adapted to receive the cards 14 as shown in the drawings. The upper edges of the cards are always exposed to view.

The invention is not limited to the details ofconstruction shown, except as specified in the appended claim.

I claim as my invention:

In a filing system, the combination with a channeled frame member, of a plurality of holders mounted therein and adapted to receive cards whereby the latter have their upper edges successivelv exposed in overlapping relation, each holder comprising a face portion and a back portion, the back portion being of greater height than the face portion, a flat portion extending downwardly from the upper edge of the face portion and substantially parallel with saidY face portion, and adapted to hook over the back portion of the adjacent holder.
