To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, DAVID WV. Bowc, a citizen of the United States, residing at Detroit, in the county of Wayne and State of Michigan, have invented a new and useful Combination Rail-Shoe, of which the following is a specification.
This invention aims to provide 'novel means for holding a railway rail in place and to provide novel means whereby the rail may be held temporaril in an elevated os1- tion, before the rail is finally secure place.
Within the scope of what is claimed, a mechanic may make changes, without departing from the spirit of the invention.
In the drawings :Figure 1 shows in top plan, a device constructed in accordance with the invention; Fig; 2 is a side elevation showing one rail chair; Fig.3 1s a cross section on the line 3-3 of Fig. 2;. Fig. 4 is a crosssection showing the rail chair of Fig. 2 as it will appear after one member of the chair has been inverted; Fig. 5 is a perspective of the clamp; Fig. 6 is a perspective showing another rail chair used in combination with the chair of Fig. 2; Fig. 7 is a plan showing a third chairused with the chairs of Figs. 2 and 6.
The numeral 1 denotes a stringer which may be made of concrete. Anchor rods .2, 201 and 200 upstand from-the stringer 2. The numeral 3 marks a rail having a base flange 4. The rail 3 is supported indirectly on the stringer 1. v
Note Fig. 6. The invention includes a chair 5 having recesses 6,, in the form of notches, in its transverse edges, the chair having upstanding ribs 7 at its ends. The ribs 7 are provided with upstanding transverse projections 8 in which are located openings 9 adapted to receive the anchor rods 200. Posts 10 upstand from the ribs 7 and have downwardly and inwardly inclined inner edges 11. The construction is such thatthe members 19 and 25 may be disposed in alinement, or,
upon occasion, theauxiliarymember25 may be inverted as shown in dotted line in Fig.
2, under, which circumstances, the posts 27 engage the main member 19 tohold the auxiliary member in'an elevated position.
The invention includes clamps 31 having intermediate recesses 32 (see Fig. 5), the recesses defining end members-33 and 34,lthe member 34 having a notch or seat35. Between its ends. the clamp 31is providedwith an opening 36. The under surface of the end member 33 is inclined as shown at 37.
In practical operation, the auxiliary members 25 of the chairs 18 are inverted as shown in dotted line in Fig. 2, so that the posts 27 rest on the main member 19. The flange 3 of the rail 4 is inserted into the seats 51 of the auxiliary members 25. The rail, there fore, cannot slide transversely, and is held temporarily in an elevated position, facilitating track work of any kind. The auxiliary member 25 may be swung backwardly until it is alined with the main member 19. Then. the. inclined edges 2810f the posts 27 and the inclined edges 11 of the posts; 10 guide the rail. as it moves downwardly, so that the base flange 4 of the rail is received between the ribs 7-7, 15- 15, 21-21 and 26--26. Prior to the lowering of the rail, as
above described, shims 42 are mounted on the stringer 1, the ends of the shims being received in the recesses 6, 1A, 20 and 22. Thus, a continuous surface is presented, whereon the base flange 41- of the rail 3 rests. The notches 35 of the clamps 31 receive the projections 22 on the ribs 21 of the main member 19 of the chair 18, the inclined surfaces 37 of the clamps engaging the base flange 4 of the rail 3 (Fig. 3). Nuts 38 are threaded on the anchor rods 2 and hold the member 19 in place, the nuts being received in the recesses 32 of the clamps. 2 project through the openings 36 of the clamps 31, nuts 39 being threaded on the up.- per ends or" the rods to hold the clamps in operative position. A like clamp construction is used in connection with the chairs 5 and 12, the clamps of the chair 12 being denoted by the numeral 40 in Fig. 1 and co operating with nuts 41 on the anchor rods 201. The anchor rods 200 together with their nuts 11 hold the clamps in operative relation to the chair 5, as Fig. 1 will make manifest.
Having thus described the invention, whatis claimed is 1. In a device of the class described, a stringer; spaced chairs on the stringer and having upstanding ribs, the chairs having notches in their transverse edges; shims on the stringer and having their ends received in the notches; and a rail supported on the shims and the chairs and received between the ribs of the chairs.
2. In a device of the class described, a stringer; a rail chair thereon and having ribs each provided with a transverse projection; a rail including a base flange received betweenthe ribs; a clamp engaging the base flange of the rail and having a notch receiving the projection; and a securing device connecting the stringer and the clamp.
3. In a device of the class described, a stringer; arail chair thereon and having ribs; a rail including a base flange received The rods 7 between the ribs; means for securing the rail to the chair and the stringer; and posts constituting a part of the chair, the posts having inclined edges serving to guide the rail between the ribs.
4:- In a device of the class described, a rail chair having ribs each provided with a transverse projection; a rail including a base flange received between the ribs; a clamp engaging the base flange oi the rail and having a notch receiving the projection; means for securing the clamp to the chair; and posts constituting a part of the chair, the posts having inclined edges serving to guide. the rail between the ribs.
5. A rail chair comprising hingedly connected main and auxiliary members forming a rail support when said members are alined, the auxiliary member having upstanding rail-guiding posts, the auxiliary member being invertible to cause the posts to engage the main member, thereby to maintain the auxiliary member elevated with respect to the main member and to render the auxiliary member eflective as a temporary rail supporting means.
6. A rail chair comprising hingedly connected main and auxiliary members having upstanding ribs and provided with posts having inclined inner edges serving to guide a rail between the ribs, when said members are alined, the auxiliary member being invertible to cause the posts to engage the main member, thereby to maintain the auxiliary member elevated with respect to the main member and to render the auxiliary member effective as a temporary rail supporting means.
