To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that 1, JAMES P.. OBRYAN,
a British subject, residing; atv Hog Island,
in the coi'inty of Philadelphia. and State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful. Improvements in Hoisting, Devices, of whichthe. following: is a specific-ation, reference-being had to-thei accompany ingsdrawings.

The, invention further aims to provide-a revoluble member for the-cable comprising a pulley casting-carryingthe cable grips, so that they will automaticallygrip' and release'the: cable, in combination with a ring plate secured to oneface of the pulley casting, so asto-cooperate withrthe; grips, to retain thescable on the revoluble'mem'ber, said" ring; plate having the marginal-edge of itsopenings" provided with teeth, so that they will be engaged-by the internal'reduction gearing, in order to cperatethe revoliible' member, said. internal reduction gearing being manually manipulated.
While the design and construction at pres entillustrated: and. set forth is deemed preferable, it is obvious that as a result of a reduction of the invention to a more practical form for commercial purposes, the invention may be susceptible to changes, and the right to these changes is claimed, provided they are comprehended within the scope of what is claimed.
The invention comprises further features and combination of parts, as will be hereinatter set forth, shown in the drawings" and claimed.

Fig. 5 is a sectional view on line 5'5 Referring more especially to the drawings, 1 designates a casing, which may be any suitable shape or configuration, preterably as'shown, though not necessarily, and may be constructed of any suitable material, such as cast metal or the like. Mounted concentrically in the casii'ig is a shaft 2 having a crank 8, and rotatable with the shaft is a gear 4. Loosely mounted on the shaft is a revoluble cable engaging member 5 and which comprises a pulley casting 6, provided with a single marginal flange 7, and the ring plate 8. This'ring plate lias'a lateral flange 9, which telescopes OVGIlZllG pulley casting, as shown, in order to overlie the same, there being suitable screws or other means 10, for securingthe ring'plate to the pulley casting. The single flange 7' is so shaped on its inner portion, as to provide a fulcruming bearing for the cable grips 11; These. cable grips may be any suitable shape or configuration, preferably as shown, though not necessarily, and are provided with curved crotches or portions 12, to engagethe fulcruming bearing on the single flange, whereby the cable grips may rock into and out of gripping engagement with the cable. In fact, certain arms ofthe grips or elements 11 engage recesses 0r cavities 13 on the inner face of the ring plate, not only to hold the grips in place, but also to hold them from creeping annularly 011 the pulley casting. In fact, the recessses or cavities are formed in the flange 9 of the ring plate. It will be seen that the grips or elements 11 are capable of being actuated by the cable, to retain the cable in position between the grips and the inner face of the ring plate. The other arms of the cable grips, when the first mentioned arms engage the recessses or cavities l3, partially overlie and grip the cable. The cable when allowed to feed upon and from the revoluble member engages the inner curved portions of the arms, which engage the recessses 13, so as to cause the other arms of the grips to partially overlie so as to prevent the.

The gripping devices are so mounted, that the greater the load on the cable, the greater the clamping and gripping action of the overlying arms of the grips on the cable. The marginal edge of the opening of the ring plate is provided with gear teeth 15. Mounted upon the shaft 2 is an elongated plate 16, in the ends of which pins 17 are journaled, and mounted upon the pins 17 are gears 18 and 19, which mesh with the internal teeth of the ring plate 8. It will be observed that when the crank is turned, motion will be imparted to the shaft 2, rotating the gear 4:, which in turn meshes with the gears 18 and 19, imparting motion thereto, and which in turn imparts motion to the ring plate, and the pulley casting. Since the grips are actuated toward and in gripping engagement with the cable, due to the load on one end of the cable, the cable will move with the revoluble member, without slipping and thereby raise the load on the end of the cable. One end of the casing is provided with a suitable clevis hook 20, which is connected to a lug of the casing by the pin 21, whereby the hoisting device may be suspended from any suitable supporting means such as a block and tackle, orfrom a-stationary support (not shown). The casing has a marginal flange, which is engaged by a side plate 22, which is secured in place by means of suitable screws or the like 23. A certain portion of the casing structure shown in Figs. 1, 2 and 3 is provided with guide passages 24 and 25, and a portion ofthe marginal flange is provided with openings 26, through which and through the passages both portions of the cable pass. By means of these openings and passages both portions of the cable are guided with relation to the casing and revoluble member, so
. that the cable will readily feed on and leave the revoluble member.
In Figs. 1 and 5 instead of the passages 24- and 25 and the opening 26, the outlet end of the casing for both portions of the cable is provided with guide pulleys 27, which are mounted upon the pins 28, so as to guide the cable on and from the revoluble gripping member in the casing.
Also movable with the pin 2 is a disk 29 having ratchet teeth 30, which are engaged by a spring tensioned dog 31, so as to hold the shaft or pin 2 and the crank in different positions, and also to prevent retrogression of the revoluble gripping member in the casting. It has been found that a hoisting device of this particular kind 7 may be used for hoisting very heavy, loads, say for instance, one or more tons, and at the same time requiring but little power on the crank, for it is obvious that the crank may be operated manually, though not necessarily, for it is obvious that any other suitable mechanical operating means may be connected to the pin or shaft 2.
The invention having been set forth, what is claimed as new and useful is:
1. In a hoisting device, the combination with a casing, of a revoluble element journaled therein, said element comprising a pulley casting having an annular fulcruming bearing, a ring plate internally toothed and secured to one face of the pulley casting provided with a portion overlying the pulley casting, said portion having cavities or recesses, a plurality of cable actuated grips fulcrumed upon the bearing and having portions to enter the cavities or recesses of the overlying part of the ring plate to grip the cable against the ring plate, and means engaging the teeth of the ring plate for operating the element.
2. In a cable hoist, the combination with a casing, of a revoluble element journaled therein, said element comprising a pulley casting having a marginal fulcruming bearlng, a plurality of grips engaging said bearing and being tilted on the bearing by the cable, due to the load on one end of the cable, a ring plate secured to one face of the pulley casting and having a portion opposed relatively to the grips, whereby the 110 cable maybe gripped between said portion and the grips, and means having gear connections with the ring plate.
3. In a cable hoist, the combination with a casing, of a revoluble element journaled 115 therein, said element comprising a pulley casting havin a marginal fulcruming bearing, a plurality of grips engaging said bearing and being .tilted'on the bearing by the cable, due to the load on one end of the 120 cable, a ring plate secured to' one face of the pulley casting and having a portion opposed relatively to the grips, whereby the cable may be gripped between said portion and the grips, and internal reduction 125 gearing means having gear connections with the ring plate for operating the revoluble element, and means for preventing retrogression of the element.
