FOLDABLE BED.
Specification of Letters Patent. l Patented Jan. 2?, 1920.
Application led April 24, 1919. Serial No. 292,279. l
be foldable into a very small package when disassembled.
Another 'object of the invention is to dispense with braces as tar as possible, thereby eliminating expense in construction and labor in setting up and dismounting the bed.
This bed is especially adapted for the use ofcampers, since its parts are so arranged that the transverse rail is the longest part when the bed is dis-assembled.
Other objects of the invention will appear as the description proceeds.
An embodiment of the invention is shown in the accompanying drawing in which the same reference numeral is applied to the sameportion throughout, but I yam aware that there may be n iodilications thereof.
vFigure .1 is a perspective view of the complete bed.
Fig. Q isa perspective view of the bed in process of being lset up. A
Fig. '3 is an enlarged detail inperspective of one of the rail joints.
Fig. 11 is an enlarged perspective view of one of the corners of the bed frame, and
Fig. 5 is a side elevation of one of the rails as it appears when folded up.
The bed has four legs 1 to 1i inclusive each of which has a projecting rivet' 5 which is intended to pass through a hole in one end of the end rails 6 and 7, each rail being connected to two legs. The entire frame of the bed is made of angle steel and the springs 8, 9 are connected to the other leg of the angles 6 and 7 from that in which the holes just mentioned are formed. vThe springs are connectedtogether by means of any suitable fabric 10 which forms the surface 'for the support of the mattress.
Each leg has a small angle steel block 11 riveted thereto which forms an abutment to hold the legs in a fixed position when the bed has been set up and which abntments are pulled intov contact with the side rails by the pressure oit the springs.
The legs are pivotally connected to the endsof the side rails 12 to 15 inclusive at points justbelow the abutments 11 and the sides 12, 13 and 14, 15 are hinged together at their ends opposite to the legs.
In order to prevent the side members from bending laterally when the bed is set up, each side member has a short angle 16 secured thereto to form a channel tor the members 12, 15 to move in and to stiien the ends of the rails 13,- 14.
In order to dispense with the necessity of side braces, the tops of the legs are cut away to leave a flange 'as shown at 18 which will abut against the ends of the end rails 6 and 7 and when the legs are spread apart slightly more at the Ybottom than the top.
In setting up the bed, the 'traine is `turned upside down as shown in Fig.-2; vThe end rails are then connected. with the legs. One person holds one end of the bed down and another pushes the other end of the bed whereupon they will hold the rails in the proper position and the frame may be turned over for use.
Having thus. described my. invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United States is as follows, express reservation being made of permissible moditications.
1. A. folding bed trame comprising in combination a pair of 'oldable side rails hinged together at their centers, a leg pivotallv connected. with each end of each pair of fldable side rails the leg having an abutment to prevent it from turning in one direction and which bears upon the top of the side rails, end rails connected with the tops ofthe legs and which rails Contact at their ene Wit i a projecting lug on the upper en de of ihe egs, und a, bed fabric connecting the end rails.
2. A folding bed frame comprising u pair.
of fldable side rails, legs connected te the I ends of the foldabieA side rails each leg havdirection, end rails adapted to be detuchably connected to the upper ends of the legs und which end rails receive the thrust of a lug carried by Suid legs, und u spring fabric connecting the end rais together.
In .testimony whereof I have hereunto Set my hund this 16th day oi April A. D. 1919.
