Description

UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
GEORGE E. FREY, OF STEUBENVILLE, OHIO, ASSIGNOR OF ONE-HALF TO B. E. SNIDER, OF MINGO JUNCTION, OHIO;
RAIL-CHAIR.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented J an. 27, 1920.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, GEORGE E. FRET, a citizen of the United States of America, and resident of Steubenville, county of J efi'erson, and State of Ohio, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Rail- Chairs, of whichthe following is a specification.
This invention relates broadly to rail chairs, and more particularly to a combined rail chair and clamp; and it has for its pri 'mary object to provide, in association with With these andother important objects in view, the invention resides in the features of construction, arrangement of parts and combinations of elements which will hereinafter be exemplified, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, in which- Figure 1 is a top plan view of the invention with a rail mounted in place thereon;
- Fig. 2 is a sectional elevation of the same, the section being taken on line 2-2, Fig. 1;
Fig. 3 is a transverse section on line 3-3, Fig. 1;
Fig. 1 is an enlarged perspective view of the rail chair;
Fig. 5 is'a similar view of the rail clamp; and- Fig. 6 is a similar view of the filler memher. p 4
Referring to said drawings, in which like designating characters distinguish like parts throughout the several vie'ws- 1 indicates a metallic crosstie which is of open trough shape, preferably approximately rectangular in cross section. Mounted upon said crosstie is a rail chair which comprises a fiathorizontal seat 2 with opposite integral vertically disposed supporting members or legs 3 which lie closely against the inner surfaces of the upright side walls of the crosstie being attached to said side walls by means of bolts or rivets 4, and which preferably have their lower edges resting upon the base of said crosstie. Also formed integral with the seat 2 at each of the opposite sides thereof are two upright guard flanges 5 which are located in alinement and which have their adjacent ends spaced apart, as shown.
'Located intermediate the alined guard flanges 5 at each of the opposite sides of, and preferably in the same plane with, the seat 2 is a laterally extending wing 6 having therein an aperture 7 of suitable shape and dimensions. Said apertures are designed for the reception of the arms 9 of a rail clamp which consists of a horizontal bar 8 terminated at opposite ends by said arms 9. Said clamp, which is initially of approximately U-shape, is designed to be elevated beneath therail chair, with its arms 9 rising vertically through the apertures 7 in the wings 6,
until the bar 8 rests firmly against the under side of the seat 2, whereupon said arms are bent inward into overlying clamping relation to opposite sides of the base of a rail 10 resting upon said seat.
The opposite guard flanges 5 of the rail chair arespaced apart a suitable distance in excess of the width of the base of the rail 10 which is to be mounted upon said chair, such distance being approximately one-half inch. The rail chairs are relatively mounted so that, when new track rails are being placed, the proper track gage will be provided for by mounting the outer edges of the rail bases in closely abutting relation to the adjacent guard flanges. There will, therefore, remain an open'space, approximately one-half inch in width as aforesaid,'between the inner edge'of the base of the rail andthe adjacent guard flanges. To provide for the filling of this open space, 1 seat upon the chair, prior to mounting the rail thereon, a filler member ll'which comprises a bar 11 having a thickness approximately the width of said space,
a length in excess of that of the rail chair,
bar 11 at each of its opposite ends is an angular foot piece 11" adapted to closely underlie the base of the rail 10. As is obvious, said bar 11 serves to maintain the rail in fixed position with the outer edge of its base abutting the outer flanges of the chair.
When the inner faces of the heads of the rails 10 have become worn the wheels passing thereover to the extent that readjustment of the track gage becomes necessary, the rails may be removed from the chair and the filler member shifted from the position above described to a similar p sition against the flanges at the outer edge of the chair; \vherei'iponthe rail may the: mounted upon the chair between said filler member and those flanges located at the inner edge of the chair, in which position said rail Will be located nearerthe opposite'tra'ck rail-s by a distance equal to the thicknessof the bar 11 of the filler member.
A notch 12 of suitable depth is provided in the bar'll of the filler member 11 for the reception of the adjacent arm 9 of the rail clamp when" said arm is bent over into clamping relation to the rail.
1. A rail chair'andclamp comprising a flat seat for a rail base, saidseathaving means whereby it i may be attac'hed to a trough-shaped crosstie; an integral wing extending laterally from each lateral edge 'of said seat, each of said wings having an'opening therein; and a bar disposed in underlying relation to said'seat'and' having terminals turned upward and inward into clamping relation to' the opposite 'sides'oii the'base of a rail mounted onsaid'seat,s aid terminals being received in the openings in saidwings.
2. A combined rail chair "and r'ailclamp comprising a fiat seat for the reception of a rail base, integral down-turned supports at the ends of said seat for attachment to a crosstie, integral laterally extending wings at th'e'sidesof said seat, said "wings having openings therein, and'abardispos'ed in underlying relation to said seat and having terminals bent into overlying" clamping relation 'to opposite sides of the base'ofa rail mounted-onsaid seat, said terminals being disposed'in said wing openings.
3&Acombinediail chair and rail'clamp, comprising flat seat for the "reception 'of a rail, base, integral'down-turnedt supports a he n s'o s id seat T ttachln' nt te'a erosstie, integral laterally extending wings at the sides ofsaid'seat, said wings having openings therein,"a bar disposed inunderlying relation to said seat and having terminas bent into overlying clamping-relation tofopposit'e" sides oft'he base 'of'a' rail mounted on sa d Sea s d terminal being dispo ed n aid "Wing penih'gsr-"guards te med on oppbsite sid s i -sai att c id df sai'dwings; the'opposite' guards being spaced apart a dis'tancein excess of the width of the rail; base which is to rest upon by the flanges of said seat, and a filler member adapted for mounting upon said seat on either side of the rail between the guards and the rail base whereby the rail is held in a position wherein the opposite edge of its baseismaintained in abutting relation to the adjacent guards.
