Description

WITNESS:
July 7, 1925'.
bIlT Al" W. H. WYATT i RAIL CHAIR AND CLAMP Filed Aug. 11. 1924 Patented July 7,
UNITED` STATE-s PATENT oFFlc.
WILLIAM H. WYATT, OF ST. LOUIS, MISSOURI.
RAIL CHAIR ANDl CLAMP.
Application filed August 1,1, 1924. Serial No. .731,411.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, VILLIAM H. WYATT, a citizen of the United States, residing at St. Louis and State of Missouri, have in nature of the invention is better understood,
the improvement resides in the construction, combination and operative association of elementsv such as is ldisclosed by the drawing which accompanies and -which forms part of this application.
In the drawing Figure l is a. perspective view of the rail fastener.
Figure 2 is an approximately central transverse vsectional view therethrough, the rail being in section.
My improvement is designed to be arranged on as many ties l for rails 2 as may be found desirable or essential inpholding the rails properly spaced and for preventing the vertical, lateral or tilting movement of the rails and also to prevent the undue creeping of the rails toward or away from each other. y
,The improvement contemplates the employment of a base plate 3 arranged longitudinally of the tie l and secured thereto by spikes 4l. The base plate 3, at a suitable dista-nce inward from its ends is formed with side flanges 5 that embrace the sides of the tie l. These flanges 5, adjacent to their ends, are notched, and through these notches there are passed securing means 6 that enter the tie.
Integrally formed vwith the base 3 andi with the side Vflanges 5 there are outstanding longitudinally disposed thickened portions or enlargements 7 each of whi-ch having its end formed with an inwardly directed angularly disposed flange 8 'respectively, whose ends are in contacting engagement with the opposite sides of the web of underlying the 'head ofthe rail. Between base flanges ofthe rail 2.
' vided with theV rail 2 and whose lower edges are in l engagement with the angular upper faces and rounded ends of the base flanges of the said rail 2. i
Integrally formed on the base 3, between the outer flanges 8, there is a brace `lug 9,
disposed atan angle to overlie the base flange of the rail, its inner face contacting with the web of the railand its upper. edge the flanges and the lug, thebase 3 is provided with openings through which are passed spikes l0 vthat enter the ties 1 and that have their heads engaging with the The efficiency of the improvement as well as the advantages thereof will, it is thought, Y be apparent fromthe foregoing to those skilled in the art to whichsuch inventions relate. Y f Having described the invention, I claim l.. .Arrailroad fastener.including a base plate designed to be arranged onand spiked?. f l
-toa tie and to support a rail thereon, said g". l
base plate having flanged sides also secured to the sides ofthe tie, inwardly directed rail engaging flanges on the sides of the base, a' brace lug between the flanges on the outer side of the rail and on which the head of the rail rests, and spikes passing through Athe hase between .thev flanges and lug and engaging with the base flanges o-f the rail.
In combination with a railway. rail and a supporting tie therefor, of a rail fastener, comprising a base plate spikedr te the tie and on which the rail rests, said base plate, in- I ward of its ends, having depending side flanges arranged against the sides of the -tie and notched for the reception of securing means, each of said flangesbeing thickened outwardly at the center thereof and :pro-
angular4 l.inwardly directed flanges to overlie the base flange ofa vrail and to Contact with the web thereof, a brace lug lformedgon the base plateV between :the
members passing throughy the base between the flanges and brace lug andhaving their heads overlying vand contacting with the'. base flange of the rails. i l i In tesimony whereof I afix'my signature.
V- -WILLVIAM 'H. WYATT..
oo. the same having its inner and lower wall outer rail engagingl flanges and .on which the head of the raily rests, and headed
