GARETT H. WHITAKEE, OF PITTSFIELD, MASSACHUSETTS, ASSIGNOR TO HIMSELF AND JACOB STEWART, OF SAME PLAGE. I
IMPROVEMENT IN INSOLES FOR BOOTS AND SHOES.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 3132,@Sl, dated November 5, 1872.
To all whom it may concern:
Beit known that I, GARETT H. WHITAKER, of Pittsfield, in the county of Berkshire and State of Massachusetts, have invented a new and Improved Insole for Boots and Shoes, of which the following is a speciiication:
This invention relates to a newr insole for boots and shoes, with the object of keeping the feet warm by its use and of curing and preventing chilblains and other unpleasant and injurious diseases caused by cold feet. The invention consists in making the sole of three thicknesses of material, of which the lower is rubber cloth, the middle, palm-leaf steeped in sulphur solution, and the upper,.carpet.
The use of the palm leatl constitutes the chief feature of the invention. It makes the sole durable and flexible, and is, by its connection with the sulphur, intended to prevent disease and to cure it if contracted.
In the accompanying drawing, Figure lis a top View in section of my improved insole, showing the three thicknesses A, B, and C of material. Fig. 2 is a longitudinal section of the same.
Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts.
' The lower thickness A of rubber cloth is cut to the form of the sole. Upon it is placed the palm-leaf B, cut to similar-form and previous- 1y steeped in the sulphur solution. Finally, the carpet C, or equivalent soft fabric, is put on top, and all three thicknesses are stitched together at the edges and in the middle, without requiring any binding.
A toe-cap of sheepskin may be applied to the end of the sole, for use in very rough weather.
Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent- An insole having rubber bottom A, palmleaf B next thereto, and fabric C arranged on top, as and for the purpose described.
GARETT H. WHITAKER.
