To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, EUGENE HENRY BLON- BEAU, a citizen of the United States, residing at Marquette, in the county of Marquette and State of Michigan, have invented new and useful Improvements in Horseshoes, of which the following is a specification.

This invention has reference to an improved construction of horseshoes and is designed to provide means whereby a shoe may be attached to a horse without the employment of the usual securing means, so that the said shoe may be readily removed when desired.

It is a further object of the invention to produce a horseshoe which may be applied to horses having different sized hoofs and readily secured thereon so that the same may be removed when desired.

It is a still further object of the invention to produce a device of this character that shall be of a comparatively simple construction, cheaply manufactured, easily applied, rigidly retained in position, and readily assembled when desired.

Other objects and advantages will present themselves as the nature of the invention is better understood, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, in which:

Figure 1 is a perspective view illustrating the application of the improvement;

Fig. 2 is a top plan view showing the hinged sides swung to their open position;

Fig. 3 is a rear elevation, the sides being closed and connected;

Fig. f is a sectional view approximately on the line 4-4 of Fig. 3;

Fig. 5 is a sectional view approximately on the line 55 of Fig. 4; and

Fig. 6 is a sectional view approximately on the line 6-6 of Fig. 3.

The improvement contemplates the employment of a base 5 which is of a shape similar to that of an ordinary horseshoe,

and which, in reality, may comprise such an ordinary horseshoe, when the device is not cast or molded. The base, at the toe and heel portions thereof may be provided with the usual depending toe blocks and heel blocks, but in lieu thereof the toe and heel portions of the base may be provided with sharpened calks.

On the base 5, at the toe portion thereof, and extending a suitable distance along the sides of the said base is molded, cast or secured a toe portion in the nature of a boot 6. The boot 6 is preferably, but not necessarily, constructed of metal and to the vertical ends thereof are hingedly connected,

lugs 10 adapted to be received in an orifice 11 in the side portions of the base inward of the heel ends thereof. The flanges of the curved sides are designed to overlie and rest on the side members of the base, when the sides are folded together. One of the curved side plates has secured thereon a buckle 12, the other side platehaving secured thereon a strap 13 designed to engage with the buckle to adjustably connect the free ends of the side plates. The side plates also have secured thereon angularly arranged straps 14, one of sald straps beingprovided with a buckle 15 and the other strap having perforations to receive the tongue of the buckle. These straps are adapted to be arranged at opposite angles around the hoof of the animal, as clearly illustrated in Fig. 1 of the draw- 1ngs, and be connected when so arranged, whereby to force and hold the bottom or inflanged portions of the bottom of the improvement against the horses hoof.

It is believed, from the foregoing description, when taken in connection with the drawings, that the simplicity and advantages of the improvement will be apparent without further detailed description.

Having thus described the invention, what is claimed as new, is:

In a removable horseshoe, a horseshoe proper having orifices in the side portions thereof; a boot, including a toe portion and side portions which are hingedly secured to the ends of the toe portion, said boot having its lower edge flanged inwardly and the flange of the toe portion overlying and secured to the toe portion of the horseshoe, the flanges of the side portions of the shoe having depending spring lugs passing therethrough which are designed to enter the orifices of the shoe when the side portions of the boot are swung thereover, and securing means for said side portions of the boot.
