Description
UNITEn STATES PATENT IMPROVEMENT IN WINDOW-SCREENS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent-N0. l32,139, dated November 5, 1872.
Td all whom may concern: p
Be it known that I, WiLLIAM H. SMITH, of
- Charlestown, in the county of Middlesex and State of Massachusetts, have invented an Improved Mosquito-Frame for Vindows; and do hereby declare the same to be fully described in the following specification and represented in the accompanying drawing, in which- Figure l denotes a front elevation of my invention as applied to a window-frame. Fig. 2 is a longitudinal section of my improved mosquito-frame. A
The object of my invention is to provide a simple and eifect-ive mosquitoframe-one so constructed as-to be readily expanded or contracted in order to t window-frames of different widths, and capable of being easily applied and secured to the frame of a window or removed therefrom, as may be desirable; and my invention consists in the construction and arrangement of the several parts of the device, as hereinafter set forth and claimed.
In the said drawing, A A and B B denote the four bars constituting the frame, the abutting ends of the said bars being inserted within and maintained by four angular metallic clamps or sleeves, a a a a. Each of the top and bottom bars A and A are inserted loosely within theirsleeves, so as to permit the side bars B and B with the angular sleeves to be moved either outward or inward in order to t the sides of the Window-frame. The mechanism or device for adjusting the frame to the width of the window-opening consists of the rod C, which is disposed within and extends transversely and centrally across the' frame, and is supported in socket-plates b b affixed to the inner faces of the bars B B. The said rod carries on its respective ends a right and left male screw, which work in corresponding female screws formed in the bars B B. By rotating the said rod in the proper direction the frame may be either expanded or contracted in Width, as may be desirable. The opening in the frame may be covered with webbing or gauze afxed to the inner face of the bars in the ordinary manner.
In applying my improved device to a window-frame I first affix to each side of the said 'frame a narrow bead or strip extending the whole length of the frame, the inner vertical sides of 'the device resting against the same, and so as to be capable of being moved freely up and down so as to cover either the upper or the lower part of the window, as may be desirable.
From the above it will be seen that a device constructed in the manner as above described can be readily applied to Windows varying in width, and adjusted and held in place by simply turning the rod C in the proper direction, such bringing the vertical bars of the frame or device into cont-act With the contiguous sides of the window-frame with any desirable degree of impact.
Having described my invention, what I claim is- The improved expanding mosquitoframe for windows, composed of the four bars A A and B B', the angular metallic connections or sleeves a a a a, and the screw-rod C, the whole being constructed, arranged, and applied together in the manner and so as to operate as set forth.
WM. H. SMITH.
