Description

Patented J an. 20, 1920.
FIG. 5
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
ROBERT J. MGKAY, OF PITTSBURGH, PENNSYLVANIA.
STAYBOLT.
Application filed May 5, 1915.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, ROBERT J. MGKAY, a citizen of the United States, and resident of Pittsburgh, in the county of Allegheny and State of Pennsylvania, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Staybolts; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description thereof.
My invention relates to stay-bolts.
The invention has relation more particularly to stay-bolts for uniting boiler plates such as the outside shell and fire-box shell of locomotives, and to the type illustrated and described in Letters Patent of the United States No. 792,863, June 20, 1905, to George S. Thompson, the distinctive features of such stay-bolts being that the eye-head and eye-bolt are interlinked by their eye-loops so as to give the necessary amount of play, while, at the same time, independent rotary movement of the parts is prevented.
My invention consists, generally stated, in an eye-head having an eye or loop and a shank with a loop engaging the loop of the eye-head, said shank having a longitudinal recess or depression formed therein to reoeive a tongue, which forms an extension of the eye-loop of said shank and which tongue engages said depression and is welded therein to the body of the shank. My invention further comprises the forming of a projection on the eye-head to engage the loop of the shank to prevent longitudinal movement of one of the eye-heads with reference to said shank but without interfering with the flexibility of the connection.
In the accompanying drawing, Figure 1 is a view. of my improved stay-bolt partly broken away; Fig. 2 is a partial longitudinal section of the same; Fig. 3 is a view showing the parts in interlocked position before the tongue has been welded to the shank; Figs. 4 and 5 are cross-sections on the lines 4.4 and 55, respectively.
The numeral 2 designates the eye-head which has the tapering threaded portion 8, the eye-loop at and the seat or recess 5 for the insertion of a suitable tool for screwing the stay-bolt in position. This eye-head 2 Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Jan. 20, 1920.
Serial No. 26,129.
is preferably formed of steel of suitable carbon and may be a drop forging.
The shank 6 has the longitudinal recess or depression 7 formed therein, and said shank is formed with the eye-loop 8, said eye-loop having the tongue or extension 9 by means of which the eye-loop is passed through the eye-loop 4L of the eye-head 2, as indicated in Fig. 3. With the parts in this position, the tongue or extension 9 is bent down and forced into the depression 7, and either by electric-welding or any other suitable manner of welding the tongue 9 is connected to the shank so as to form practically an integral structure.
In this manner, the interlocking connection is made between the eye-head and the shank so as to give the required flexibility, but in order to guard against longitudinal movement of the eye-head with reference to the shank, we provide the projection or bearing point 10 on the eye-head, which engages the eye-loop 8 of the shank. This projection 10 may be formed after the parts have been united, by a suitable punch applied to the inside of the recess 5 and by a blow administered by a hammer or other tool the metal at the center of the eye-head is projected to form the projection 10. This projection, while preventing the longitudinal movement of the parts with reference to each other, does not in any way interfere with the flexibility of the connection; and the metal of the eye-head being in a sense hardened, the
projection 10 will stand the wear occasioned by its movement on the loop of the shank, the shank itself being made of a softer metal.
What I claim is:
A stay-bolt comprising an eye-head and a shank having inter-locking loops, and a projection on said eye-head projecting into the loop portion of said eye-head and engaging the looped end of said shank.
In testimony whereof, I, the said ROBERT J. MoKAY, have hereunto set my hand.
ROBERT J. MoKAY.
