JOSEPH LESSLER, OF BUFFALO, NEW YORK.
IMPROVEMENT IN OIL-TANKS.
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, JOSEPH LEssLER, ofBuffalo, in the county of Erie and in the State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Oil-Tank; and do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawing and to the letters of reference marked thereon making a part of this specification.
My invention relates particularly to tanks for containing oil, but is equally applicable to tanks or other vessels for containing any kind of liquid; and the nature of my invention consists in covering the seams, bolts, rivets, &c., by a movable or stationary covering, made of'metal or other suitable material, and placed on-the inside of the tank over such seams, rivets, or bolts, and filled with packing to prevent leakage of the tank or vessel through My invention also consists in a gutter-shaped rim at the lower end or bottom of the tank, for the purpose of conducting any oil that may possibly percolate through the scams or sides of the tank, by means of said gutter or rim, through a tube to a smaller tank or vessel, and thus save waste.
In order to enable others skilled in the art to which my invention appertains to make and use the same, I will now proceed to describe its construction and operation, referring to the annexed drawing, in which- Figure 1 is a perspective view of my tank. Fig. 2 is a longitudinal section of the lower part thereof; and Fig. 3 is a horizontal section of a portion thereof.
A represents a tank of any suitable dimensions, made of plates of sheet metal in the usual manner, the seams being made with bolts, rivets, or other convenient means. The seams are covered on the inside by a covering, B, made of metal or other suitable material, in semi-tubular or other convenient shape. The covering B may be either permanently attached to the tank over the seams, bolts,
rivets, 800., by means of solder, bolts, or rivets, or it may be movable, and sliding in grooves or guides a a, attached to the tank on each side of the seam, as shown in the drawing. The covering B is then to be filled with flaxseed, saw-dust, cotton, wool, or any other suitable substance, or water may be used, thereby preventing leakage of the tank or vessel through said seams, bolts, rivets, &c. The filling or paekingO within the covering B may consist of any kind of material, liquids, seeds, textile fabrics, or minerals. At the lower end or bottom of the tank Ais a guttershaped rim, D, with a pipe, E, leading downward to another tank or vessel, so that any oil that may possibly percolate through the sides or seams of the tank will be collected in said gutter or rim and conducted through the pipe E into the tank or vessel below. The tank A may be provided witha bottom, or the tank may be set up, without a bottom, on clay or wood and filled with about one foot of water. The covering B, with packing O, as well as the rim D, are applicable to any other tanks or vessels for containing other liquids as well as for oil-tanks.
Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
1. A covering, B, made either movable or stationary, filled with packing G, and covering the seams, rivets, bolts, &c., of a tank or other vessel, substantially as and for the purposes herein set forth.
2. A guttershaped rim D, attached to or formed around the lower end of a tank or other vessel, A, substantially as and for the purposes herein set forth.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing I have hereunto set my hand and seal this-23d day of September, 1872.
JOSEPH LESSLER. [L. s]
