To all whom z tmay concern Be it known that'I, REED ADAMS, a citizen of the United States, residing-at Lapeer,
. following to be a full, clear, and exactde-f county of Lapeer, State of Michigan, have invented a certain new and useful Improvement in Printing-Presses, and declare the scription of the same, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which 1t per tains to make and use the same, reference being bad to the 'accompanyin drawings, which form a part of this speci cation.
This invention relates to printing presses, and has for its object a special control for regulating the operation of small presses. This control comprises a treadle-operated clutch and brake, and the use of a supplemental treadle at the side of the machine so that an operator who is changing the type form at the side is not required to have an assistant when automatic feeders are employed.

It is the object of this invention to stop and start the press very quickly and to eliminate the movement of the press parts by momentum after the power has been disconnected. This press is designed for work which requires frequent change of some of the printing matter, as changing the addresses in a stock letter, and consequently it is desirable to stop and start'the press as quickly as possible so as to lose'no time.
To this end I employ a driving shaft o provided with the balance wheel I) and having the male clutch part c splined thereon.

This driven gear is fast to a shaft h which has on its opposite end a braking drum i. A treadle j is pivoted to the base of the machine and provided with a pedal is in front of the machine. The bent link Z connects with the pivoted bell crank lever mwhich has a pair of forks n on its endengaging the pins 0 on opposite sides of the end of the shifting sleeve 79. This shifting sleevehas at the opposite end, a shifting fork-q which engages the annular race 1' of the male clutch part. The brake drum i is encompassed by a braking strap t fastened to one end of the lever M which is pivoted to the front of the frame. Consequently when the right hand end of this lever is up, the left hand end is down, and the braking strap is pulled. I

It is evidentthat the press only operates when the pedal is depressed, which serves to release the brake strap t and engage the clutch parts, thereby throwing on the power. Immediately when the treadle is released, the spring 8 pulls it back to place, applies the brake strap 2? and disengages the clutch parts, thereby disengaging the power and avoiding continuance of the movement of the press parts by momentum.
At the bottom of the press on the legs I journal a cross shaft w, which at the left hand end of the press is provided with a treadle w.
