The pulley 7c is constructed as a fly wheel. Further fiy-wheels is, 70 can be provided at any other convenient parts of the driving mechanism, for example on the shaft-h, or on the motor shaft, as indicated in, dotted lines in'Fig. 2.
Of essential importance in this construc* tion is the arrangement of the driving organs including the motor and the fly-wheels inside the machine. By this arrangement space is saved and much greater security is obtained in operation; further, disturbances,
which would be caused by foreign bodies falling into the gear, are avoided.
In order to obtain still greater safety a breaking piece is arranged between a driving and a driven part of the gear, which piece breaks when the machine is subjected to too great a strain, and thus the machine is caused tov stop. For this purpose an arm 25 is keyed to the driving shaft on. The spurwheel a is not fastened on the driving shaft m direct, but by means of a pin 25' secured to the arm t. As soon as the stress on the machine exceeds a certain amount the pin 2? is clipped, and the machine comes to rest.
Further, in the driving mechanism a coupling is provided, which can be easily put in and out of action, for the purpose of stopping the machine without the usual brake device. This coupling, which is clearly shown in Figs. 4c and 5, consists of thfriction disk mv keyed on the driving shaft in, and of av coupling disk is adapted tomove longitudinally on the shaft m and partly on the hub of the friction disk m, said' disk 70 being driven by the belt Z, and adapted to be moved. longitudinally through the .i'nstru- I mentality of the lever m a To operate the coupling it is preferable to use the link-gearing shown in Figs. 6, 7

This takes place when'the knee joint M is somewhat below a line connecting the centers a Vanda, and, in this position, the arm u, owing to the reaction of the coupling, is pressed against the stop u. The coupling is accordingly put into action and'the lever a is held in position.
If, on arranging a lever u on each side of the 'machine, the two levers cannot be keyed on a common shaft (for example owing to insufficient space) the coupling cannot be put out of operation on one side alone, because the knee joint on the opposite side would not be opened. By providing a second lever uf and rod a it is rendered possible to put the coupling in and out of operation on both sides of the machine, without any special fastening being necessary, because, on actuating one of the levers a, both knee joints a are pushed through the middle position by the rods 71/ and lever MP.
A further important feature of the invention is the arrangement-of a mechanical device for adjusting themachine to various printing speeds. As will be seen from Fig. 2 the device is combined with the machine in such a manner that the machine is not enlarged in any way. The belt 9 running over the cones e, f can be moved longitudinally of said cones by the screw spindle o and fork a by means of a hand wheel 1 the speed of the machine beingthus altered.
Because the lowest speed attainable with the cones is still too high to enable work to be done on the cylinder, for example to wash or cover said cylinder and to effect adjustmentsrof'the mechanism, I provide a special device for obtaining a slow mechanlcal forward motion. The -dev1ce consists of two friction'disks w and w which are keyed on a spindle w journaled in the lever 20 By. moving thelever'w which can be done by means of the lever arm w, rod 'w bell crank lever w andpedal .w, the friction wheel u: can be brought into contact with the hub to of the driving wheel is. At the same time the "disk w presses against the friction disk '21:", so that the quick rotation vof the driving wheel k .is converted into a slow rotation of the disk w" on the shaft m,v and the machine is accordingly driven very slowly.

In order to put the spur-wheel 02 out of engagement with the toothed crown m when the gear proper is put-intoaction, which is doneby moving the fly wheel k' longitudinally of shaft m, a roll 00 is provided on a lever 00 which bears against said fly-wheel and is moved when the clutch is put into operation by moving, the fly-wheel toward the friction disk m". As a consequencethe spindle m and the lever 03 secured to said spindle are turned somewhat, and the rod m ,attached to the lever m "is pulled back against the tension .of the spring a, so that the spur-wheel m is released and is moved longitudinally by the spring 00 until it does not engage wiiththe toothed crown 00 The mechanical driving ofrthe machine accordingly then takes place, without the hand -gear being influenced. If after putting .the mechanical driving out of action it is desired to put the hand gear into operation, it is only necessary to push vin the shaft 00 against the tension of the spring as, and thus to bring the spur-wheel a into engagement with-the toothed crown m whereupon the spring m causes the pin a to rise and keep the spur-wheel m in its working position, so, that the machinecan be driven by handagain.

A printing machine comprising in combination a reciprocating form, a coopera ing impression cylinder, and actuating means for said form and cylinder all in the outline of the machine frame, said means including a shaft, a fly wheel loose upon said shaft and provided with a clutch element, a second clutch element adapted to rotate said shaft, means to bring the clutch element of said fly wheel into engagement with said second clutch element, a motor adapted to drive said fly wheel, and a fly wheel on the shaft of said motor substantially as set forth.

A printing machine comprising in combination, a reciprocating form, a cooperating impression cylinder, and actuating means for said form and cylinder including a shaft, a rotatable element loose upon the shaft and movable longitudinally thereon, a clutch element keyed to the shaft, means for imparting a different speed of rotation to the rotatable element, and a system of knee or double jointed levers for moving the rotatable element toward said clutch element and locking the same in the adjusted position.

A printing machine comprising in combination, a reciprocating form, a cooperating cylinder, and actuating means for said form and cylinder including a shaft, a fly wheel loose upon said shaft and provided with a clutch element, a second clutch ele ment adapted to rotate with said shaft, means for imparting different speeds of rotation to said shaft, and means for bringing the clutch element of said fly wheel into engagement with the second clutch element, substantially as set forth.
7 A printing machine comprising in combination, a reciprocatin form, a coiiperating impression cylin er, and actuating means for said form and cylinder including a shaft, a fly wheel loose upon said shaft and provided with a clutch element, a second clutch element adapted to rotate with said shaft, means to bring the clutch element of said fly wheel into engagement with said second clutch element, a motor adapted to drive said fly wheel, and a hand operated device for driving said fly wheel, substantially as set forth.

A printing machine comprising in combination, a reciprocating form, a coiiperating impression cylinder, and actuating means for said form and cylinder including a shaft, a fly wheel loose upon said shaft and provided with a clutch element, a second clutch element adapted to rotate with said shaft, means to bring the clutch element of said fly wheel into engagement with said second clutch element, a motor adapted to drive said fly wheel, a hand operated device for driving said fly wheel, and means for putting said hand operated driving device out of gear, when the motor is driving said fly wheel, substantially as set forth.
