Specification of Letters Patent.

Application filed October 18, 1919. Serial No. 331,560.

To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that 1, WILLIAM D. STANI- FER, a citizen of the United States, residing at Chickasha, in the county of Grady and State of Oklahoma, have invented a new and useful Gin-Saw Cleaner, Tooth Straightener and Sharpener, of which the following is a specification.

This invention relates to gin saw cleaning devices, and it is the primary object of the invention to provide a device of this character, having means to permit an unlimited adjustment of the cleaning element, with relation to the body or frame of the device supporting the same, to adapt the cleaner to gin saws wherein the distance between the saws thereof varies.

With the foregoing and other objects in view which will appear as the description proceeds, the invention resides in the combi-. nation and arrangement of parts and in the details of construction hereinafter described and claimed, it being understood that changes in the precise embodiment of the invention herein disclosed, may be made within the scope of what is claimed, without departing from the spirit of the invention.

Referring to the drawing Figure 1 illustrates a plan view of a gin saw cleaning device constructed in accordance with the present invention, the cover being shown as partly broken away.

Fig. 2 is a longitudinal sectional view taken on line 22 of Fig. 1.

Fig. 3 illustrates a side elevational View of the frame with the cover removed, the cleaning elements thereof being shown in their normal position, prior to adjustment and Fig. 4 illustrates a sectional view taken on line 44 of Fig. 3.

Referring to the drawing in detail, the reference character 5 indicates the body of the frame, which i formed of metal, or other suitable material, and is provided with an upwardly extending flange 6, provided on two sides thereof, to form a housing for the cleaning elements, to be hereinafter more fully described.

The flanges 6, forming a part of the housing, are provided with shoulders 7, which are spaced from the bottom or body of the frame, a distance equal to the height of the respective cleaning elements, to receive and support the cover of the frame, which cover includes the relatively flat member 8, provided with a handle 9, which forms the handle for the tool, to provide means for operating the same.

This cover 8, i provided with openings 10, formed in the side faces thereof, which openings 10, register with openings 11, also provided in the flanges 6, to receive threaded means, not shown, by which the cover is secured to the frame. I

A circular rod 12, is disposed between the sidewalls of the frame, the ends thereof being secured to the side walls to prevent displacement of the rod, and support the same in suitable spaced relation with the rear wall, or flange of the frame. The cleaning elements, include opposed leg portions 14, which are curved intermediate their lengths, as at 15, the outer or free ends thereof lying in close engagement with each other, as at 16, the extreme ends 17 extending outwardly from each other, to provide a guide, for guiding the device over the saws, to be cleaned.

As shown, each of the cleaning elements includes a relatively long leg portion, and a leg portion secured, or carried thereby, as indicated at 18, the extreme inner end of the relatively long leg portion of each cleaning element, being provided with an aperture 19, accommodating the rod 12. These cleaning elements are disposed within the frame between the flanges thereof, and are arranged therein whereby the curved portions 15 thereof, contact with each other, whereby movement of one cleaning element produces a relative movement of the remaining cleaning element, and tends to compress the curved portions 15 of the cleaning elements to lend resiliency thereto.

20, and 21, the openings 20 being threaded and adapted to receive the threaded adjusting screws 22, which bear against the outer cleaning elements, intermediate their lengths, for forcing the outer or free ends thereof, toward each other, the opposite openings 21, being also screw threaded to receive the threaded adjusting screws 23, which have engagement with the outer cleaning elements adjacent the inner ends thereof, whereby movement of the adjusting screws 23, causes an adj ustment of the inner ends of all of the cleaning elements within the frame.

adjacent cleaning elements, are .the coil springs 24, which force the inner ends of the cleaning elements apart, and it will thus be seen that movement of the adjusting screws 23, moves the inner ends of the cleaning elements, against the tension of the coil springs 2-1, which coil springs restrict the lateral movement, of the inner ends of the cleaning elements.

If it becomes necessary to clean the teeth of a gin saw, wherein any number of the saws thereof, are spaced a greater or less distance apart, than the remaining saws thereby, it is only necessary to adjust the inner ends of the'cleaning element, a proper distance, to hold the inner end stationary.

It follows that an adjustment of the members 22, now regulates the distance that the outer ends of the cleaning elements shall be moved, so that the same will properly engage, and operate over the saws under operation:

Having thus described the invention, what is claimed is 1. In a gin saw, cleaning device, a frame including a body portion, upwardly extending flanges formed on the body portion, a rod disposed within the frame, a plurality of cleaning elements supported on the rod, resilient means between the cleaning elements, for restricting lateral movement thereof with relation to the frame, threaded adjusting means operating through the side flanges of the frame and engaging the inner ends of the cleaning elements for adjusting the same, and threaded adjusting members extending through the side flanges of the ing element produces a relative-movement 1 of the remaining cleaning elements, means eXtendmg-through the side walls ofthe casing and contacting with the lower extremities of predetermined cleaning elements for adjusting theupper portions of the cleaning elem ent.

3. In a gin saw cleaning device, a frame,

curved portions of the cleaning' elements contactingwith each other, adjustable means passing through the side Wallsof the frame and contacting with the outer cleaning elements adjacent the curved portions thereof for adjusting the cleaning elements within the frame and adjustingmeans disposed adjacent the inner endsof the-cleaning elements for adjusting the inner ends of the cleaning elements withinthe frame.
