FREDERICK W. SCHILLING, OF LOUISVILLE, OHIO.
BOTTLE-CLOSURE.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Jan. 13, 1920.
Application filed January 5, 1917. Serial No. 140,779.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, FREDERICK, lV. SCHIL LING, a citizen of the United States, and resident of Louisville; in the county of Stark and State of Ohio, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Bottle- Closures, of which the following is a specification.
The present invention relates to bottle closures, and, the invention has more especial reference to an improved milk bottle closure cap. I
The invention has for its principal object to provide a closure cap, which, when arranged over the mouth of a milk bottle or like receptacle, will efii'ciently close the same and will be prevented from moving laterally out of engagement with the bottle.
Another object of my invention is to provide a closure cap having resilient engaging members adapted for engaging that portion of the bottle as adjacent the mouth 'of the same, thus maintaining the cap in proper relation to the bottle at all times and yet permitting the ready removal thereof when so desired.
The improvements in the details and arrangement of parts will beapparent from an inspection of the accompanying drawings, in connection with the specific description hereinafter contained, and wherein the preferred embodiment ofthe invention-is shown for the purpose of imparting a full understanding of the same.
In the drawings:
Figure 1 is a top plan of my improved closure cap as applied to-a milk bottle;
Fig. 2 is a transverse section in elevation therethrough, and
Fig. 3 is a side elevation of the improved closure cap. I
Referring more particularly to the drawings, wherein like reference numerals refer tocorresponding parts throughout the views, the improved closure cap may be stated to embody an annular piece of material, preferably metal, indicated by the numeral 1 and having. the marginal edge thereof bent downwardly or flanged as at 2, whereby, the same will slightly overlap the beading as commonly formed upon the usual type of milk bottle, designated bythe numeral 3. Depending arcuate yieldably' engaging strips 4: and 5 are formed upon the peripheral edge of the piece or closure cap 1 and have their lower ends offset to provide finger-pieces 6, whereby, when the said members are engaged with the beading of the milk bottle 3, they may be readily moved away from the same by inserting the finger or other suitable implement under the offset portion 6 and forcing the same outwardly. It will be appreciated, that by providing the members 4 and 5, that the cap 1 will be securely maintained upon the bottle and consequently, an efiicient closure for the mouth thereof is afiorded.
To prevent any posibility of undue lateral movement of the closure cap, there is formed in the top thereof an annular depression 7, the said depression will be arranged in spaced relation from the marginal edge of the cap and parallel therewith. Sufficient space is left between the depression 7 and the marginal edge of the closure cap to allow that portion as between the same to span the neck of the bottle or that portion of the bottle as adjacent the mouth of the same. \Vhen in position over the mouth of the milk bottle, it will be noted, that the annular depression 7 engages the inner wall of the bottle neck, while the flanged portion 2 slightly overlaps the outer wall or more specifically the beading of the bottle neck. Hence, accidental displacement of the cap when the same is properly engaged with the bottle neck will be prevented.
It is to be understood, that instead of forming the annular depression 7 within the closure cap, any suitable form of shoulder or stop may be arranged upon the under face thereof, such as will properly engage the inner wall of the bottle neck and prevent undue lateral movement or shifting of the closure cap. Furthermore, any number of the yieldably engaging members 4 and 5 may be formed upon the peripheral surface of the closure cap, 'such as conditions or preference may dictate.
As hereinbefore indicated, I do not wish to be understood as confining the invention to the particular embodiment chosen for illustration herein, nor to the exact construc recess internally of said mouth, of a cap comprising a circular disk having struck therefrom concentrically of the same a hollOW rib providing spaced circular walls disposed inwardly relative to the marginal edge of the said disk, the outermost annular Wall being adapted for frictional engagement in the recess in said 'mouth, the portion of the disk concentrically of the hollow ,10 rib being flat and contacting throughout with the edge of the mouth, resilient strips formed at diameterically opposite points on the disk at the peripheral edge thereof and outwardly bowed to conform to the con- VeXed rim for engagement over the. same, and downwardly divergent tips formed on said strips to provide finger pieces.
In testimony whereof, I aflix my signature hereto.
FREDERICK W. SCHILLING.
