To all 'whom t may concern:
Be it known that I, WILLIAM R. RAY, a citizen of the United States, residing in the city and county of San Francisco and State of California, have invented new and useful Improvement in Burner-Mountings, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to a burner mounting and especially to a mounting for oil burners of the centrifugal atomizing type.
, One of the objects of the present invention is to provide a simple and substantial motor driven crude oil burner of the rotary type in which the oil is ejected and atomized by the combined action of centrifugal force and an air blast, and particularly to provide means for protecting the burner against radiant and conducted heat of the furnace.
Another object of the invention is to provide a novel mounting for the burner to permit it to be readily moved to or away from the furnace opening and also to provide a substantial support for a refractory lining by which the burner is protected. said support being also movable to permit renewal of the lining or cooling of the same.
Further objects will hereinafter appear.
The invention onsists of the parts and the construction, combination and arrangement of parts as hereinafter more fully described and claimed. having reference to the accompanying drawings. in which- Figure 1 is a perspective view of a furnace front, showing the application of the invention.
Fig. 2 is a front view of the same.
Fig. 3 is a perspective view of the refractorv brick or tile support.
Referring to the drawings in detail, A indicates a rectangular-shaped plate which is constructed so that it may be readily attached to a furnace front and the like by means of bolts 2. Formed around the outer edge of the plate A are Hannes 8. 4. 5 and 6, these fianges being provided for the purpose of supporting the plate A if it is desired to build it right into the brick work of the furnace front. Formed on the outer Harige 6 are a pair of supporting lugs 7 and passing through said lugs is a pipe 8 which serves as a pintle for the burner generally indicated at B. a nozzle supporting door 9 and a tile supporting door 10. The respective doors 9 and 10 are supported by means of a pintle or pipe 8 as hinge lugs 11 and 12 are formed on the respective doors, the burner being in this instance supported in a similar manner as hinge lugs 13 are formed on the fan casing, as will hereinafter be described. The door 10 consists of a plate around which is formed channel-shaped flanges (see Fig. 3), as indicated at 14, 15 and 16. Adapted to be supported by said flanges is a tile plate 16A in which is formed a central opening 17. The tile may be constructed of any suitable refractory material or a series of bricks may be placed therein.
The hinges 11, by which the door 10 is supported. permit it to be swung outwardly with relation to the furnace plate and it is therefore possible to remove the tile 16A or the bricks contained therein, whenever desired, without destroying the burner mounting or any of the connections formed therewith. The door 9 is also free to swing about the pintle and it is provided in this instance as a support for a nozzle 18, said nozzle being so arranged that it will project through the opening 17 formed in the tile. The oil burner proper indicated at B consists of an electric motor 19, which is supported by a central Vbearing member 20 and a fan housing 21, said fan housing being supported on the pintle 8 by means of the hinge lugs 13. Formed on the inner face of the fan housing is a nozzle 22 and mounted interior of said nozzle is a centrifugal atomizer to which oil is delivered by means of a pipe 23, said pipe extending through the motor shaft as this is hollow. The oil is otherwise delivered to the pintle 8 as this is hollow and it is conveyed from the pintle to the pipe 23 by means of the pipes indicated at 24 and 25, the flow of oil being regulated by means of a valve 26.
In actual operation, with a centrifugal burner mounted as here shown, it can readily be seen that the burner may be swung to or from the furnace opening as the whole unit is supported on the pintle 8 by means of the hinge ugs 13 and that said movement ma)l take place without disturbing any of the oil delivering connections as the oil is delivered by means of a hollow pintle 8. The doors- 9 and 10 are closed when the burner is in operation and the burner is furthermore swung directly up against the door 9 when in operation, to permit the atomized oil and air discharging through the nozzle 22, to pass through the nozzle 18 and the opening 17 formed in the tile plate 16. The atomized fuel and air will then enter the furnace where combustion takes place.
By referring to Fig. 1, it will be seen that lugs 27 are formed on the forward face of the door 9. These lugs serve the function of maintaining a space between the fan casing and the door, thereby permitting air to enter between the nozzles 22 and 18; that is, the vatomized oil and air discharging through nozzle 22 produces a jet action in thenozzle 18, thereby inducing a secondary flow of air between the fan casing in the door 9 which enters an annular passage formed between the nozzles 18 and 22. This is of great importance as it not only supplies an ample quantity of ai-r to the furnace chamber but it also serves the function of cooling the burner proper, thereby preventing overheating of the nozzle 22 or burning `out of the bearings containing the fan and motor. overheating of these parts is further taken care of as the tile plate 16A shields the burner proper, both against radiant and conducted heat.
The fan casing may be locked with relation to the door 9 by means of a swivel catch 30. The door and the fan casing may therefore be opened or closed in unison or independently of each other. The door 10 is normally maintained in a closed condition by means of a swivel latch 31 as it is not necessary to open the door 10 except when it is desired to rapidly cool the furnace' or to renew'the tiles 16 or the brick lining contained therein.
From the foregoing description it should be obvious that a simple, substantial and desirable mounting has been provided for an oil burner of the type here shown. First, because it is possible to protect the burner against radiant and conducted heat of the furnace by means of the refractory lining provided. Secondly, it becomes possible to induce a secondary supply of air which not only assists combustion within the furnace but further, serves the function of cooling the burner. Third, it is possible to swing the burner away from the furnace opening or to swing any of the doors shown, about the pintle without disturbing the connections by which the oil is delivered.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent is- 1. A burner mounting comprising a furnace front plate, a door hingedly secured to said plate having a central opening formed therein, a burner also supported on the same hinge mounting adapted to be swung to or from the central opening in the door, and
. means on the interior side of the door for supporting a refractory lining.
2. A burner mounting comprising a furnaceqfront plate, a doorl hingedly secured to said plate having a central opening formed therein, a burner also supported on the same hinge mounting adapted to be swung to 'or from the central opening in the door, a channel-shaped flange formed on the inner side of the door and a refractory lining supported in said flange.
3. A burner mounting comprising a furnace frontplate, a door hingedly secured to said plate having a central opening formed therein, a burner also supported on the same hinge mounting adapted to be swung to or from the central. opening in the door, a channel-shaped flange formed on the inner side of the door, on the sides and on the bottom, and a refractory tile member supported by and removable with relation to said channel-shaped flanges.

A burner mounting comprising a furnace front plate, a pair of supporting lugs formed on one side of said plate, a hollow pint-le member extending through and secured in said lugs, a door hingedly mounted on said pintle having a central opening formed therein, a burner also supported on the pintle and adapted to be swung to or away from the opening in the door, a channel-'shaped flange formed on the sides and on the bottom of the door and on the inner side thereof, and a refractory tile member supported by and removable with relation to said channel-shaped flanges.
5. A burner mounting comprising'v a furnace front plate, a pair of supporting lugs formed on one side of said plate, a hollow pintle member extending through and secured in said lugs, a door hingedly mounted on said pintle having a central opening formed therein, a burnern also supported on the pintle and adapted to be swung to or away from the opening in the door, a channel-shaped flange formed on the sides and onv the bottom of the door and onv the inner side thereof, a refractory tile member supported by and removable with relation to said channel-shaped flanges, a second door hingedly mounted on a pintle member, said door being interposed between the first named door and the burner, a nozzle member on said door projecting through the central opening in the first named door, means for maintaining a spacing between the burner and the secondnamed door, and means for securing the burner withV relation to the second named door.
6. A burner mounting comprising a furnace front plate, a pair of supporting lugs formed on one side of said plate, a hollow pintle member extending through and'secured in` said lugs, a door hingedly mounted on said pintle havinga central opening formed therein, al burner also supported on the pintle and adapted to be swung to or away from the opening in the door, a channel-shaped flange formed on the sides and on the bottom of the door and on the inner side thereof, a refractory tile member supported by and removable with relation to said channel-shaped flanges, a second door hingedly mounted on a pintle member, said door being interposed between the irst named door and the burner, a nozzle member on said door projecting through the central opening in the irst named door, means Jfor maintaining a spacing between the burner and the second named door, means for securing the burner with relation to the second named door, and a nozzle on the burner projecting into the nozzle formed on the second named door, said nozzle burner being of smaller diameter than the rst named nozzle to form an annular air admitting passage between the two nozzles.
7. A burner mounting comprising a furnace front plate, a pair of supporting lugs formed on one side of said plate, a hollow pintle member extending through and secured in said lugs, a door hingedly mounted on said pintle having a central opening formed therein, a burner also supported on the pintle and adapted to be swung to or away from the opening in the door, a channel-shaped iange formed on the sides and on the bottom of the door and on the inner side thereof, a refractory tile member supported by and removable with relation to said channel-shaped anges, a second door hingedly mounted on a pintle member, said door being interposed between the first named door and the burner, a nozzle member on said door projecting through the central opening in the first named door, means for maintaining a spacing between the burner and the second named door, means for securing the burner with relation to the second named door, a nozzle on the burner projecting into the nozzle formed on the second named door, said nozzle burner being of smaller diameter than the first named nozzle to form an annular air admitting passage between the two nozzles, and an oil delivering connection formed between the pintle and the burner.
