Be it known that LUTHER L. KNOX, a
State of Pennsylvania, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Furnace Pro tection. of `which the following is a full, clear, and exact description, reference being had vto the accompanying drawings, forming partl of this specification, in Which- Figure 1 is a front elevation of a furnace having my invention applied thereto. Filq. 2 is a section on the line lL-ll of Fig. 1. Fig. -3 is a section on the line llL-ll of Fig. 1. Fig. 4 is a plan View, Fig. 5 is a front elevation, and Fig. 6 is avertical section of a combined apron and air box.
In the operation ciI n rnaccs, such for instance as sheet and pair rnaces, the Workmen are required to perform certain op erationsin the Way oi manipulating metal being heated through open or partially open furnace doors. lhile performing these operations they are without adequate protection from the intense escaping through the doors.
My invention is designed to provide a Water cooled shield for furnaces of this character. and which is so constructed and arranged that it will form an eliicient means of protection for the Workmen.
My invention also provi( es safety guards or aprons for preventing injury to the Work men from the counterweights employed in the operation of the furnace doors and dempers 'and it also provides a novel `forno of air reservoir in connection with one of these aprons lor guards, whereby the workmen'can hlow air upon themselves es may be ydesired -while at work about the furnace.

The shields are supported in place in any suitable manner as by the hanger bars 16 which are secured at their upper ends tothe top frame member 17 of the furnace frame.
The shields are set outwardlyaway 'fromthe end of the furnace on the buckstays 18, as best shown in Fig. 2, so as to provide a suiiicicnt space behind the shields and bettjfeen the shields and the doors 7 for the hot air and products of combustion from the furnace to pass upwardly behind the shields. f
In this 'manner the heads and faces of the Workmen are protected.
