IMPROVEMENT IN SCREW-FERRULES FOR BROOMS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 132,817, dated November 5, 1872.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, Mosns W. BILLING- HAM, of Amsterdam, in the county of Montgomery and State of New York, have invented a new and valuable Improvement in Screw- Ferrules for Brooms; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the construction and operation of the same, reference being had to the annexed drawing making a part of this specification and to the letters and figures of reference marked thereon.
Figure l of the drawing is a representation of a sectional view of a broom with ferrule removed. Fig. 2 is a side elevation of my ferrule. Fig. 3 is a sectional view, showing inside of the same. I
My invention has relation to the manufacture of brooms; and consists in providing a ferrule constructed with a screw-thread on its inner side and adapted to clasp over and screw into the butts of the broom-straw upon the handle and hold the same securely, thereby dispensing with the wires and tacks upon the butts of the straw, usually employed in such manufacture.
A of the drawing represents my ferrule. It is usually constructed of tin or zinc, but brass, sheet-iron, or other suitable metal may also be used in the manufacture thereof. The inner side of this ferrule is constructed with a screwthread, as shown, and its outer surface either corrugated as the drawing represents, orit may to the handle the lower layers are cut olf or otherwise arranged so as to make the butts.
assume a wedge-like or conical form, the smallest end being uppermost upon the handle. Over this smallest end or butt-s of the straw I place the ferrule, and, by turning it around a suflicient number of times, clasp and hold the straw securely in place. The screw upon the ferrule cuts a corresponding thread in the moist butts of the straw, and thereby, without the usual wires, twine, or tacks, holds the straw firmly and permanently in the desired position.
I sometimes form a screw-thread on the butts 0f the straw by using a proper die for that purpose while the straw is green or moist. In such case the ferrule can be applied at any time, and even after the straw becomes hardened by drying.
I am aware that screw-clamps have been used in the manufacture of painters brushes in conjunction with screw-plates; I do not, therefore, claim the use thereof in such manufacture; but
I claim as my invention- The screw-ferrule A, constructed and adapted for use in the manufacture of brooms, substantially as specified.
In testimony that I claim the above I have hereunto subscribed my name in the presence of two witnesses.
MOSES W. DILLINGHAM.
