To all whom it may concern: Be it known that I, SWAN NELSON, citizen of Canada, residing at Winnifred, in the Province of Alberta, Canada, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Pumps, of which the following is a speclfication, reference being had to the accompanying drawings. I 1
This invention relates to certain'improvements in pumps, and has relation more particularly to a device of this general character of a rotary type and it'is an object of the invention to provide a pump having novel andimprovedmeans whereby the same may be operated with convenience and facility and whereby a continuous stream of operation of the rotor. v 4
It is also an' object of the invention to provide a novel and improved device of this general character including a casing adapted to be submerged and inwhich the rotor 1s positioned and wherein theside walls of the casing below the rotor are provided w1th induction openings.
A further object of the invention is to provide .a novel'and improved device of this general character -wherein the caslng 1n which the rotor is positioned is provided with means whereby the fluid entering within the casing is held against circularor rotary movement within the casing under the influence of the rotor and whereby the lifting of the'fiuid is materially facilitated.
An additional object of the invention is to provide a novel and improved device of this general character including a 'casmg adapted for submergence and provided with induction openings and wherein means are provided to prevent entrance of sand, gravel or the like into the casing through the 1nduction openings.

As disclosed in'the accompanying drawings 1 denotes a head adapted to be suitably supported above or over the top of the well and extending upwardly from said head is a housing 2 preferably in the form of a 1 truncated cone. At diametrically disposed points the upper end portion of the housing 2 1s cut away as indicated at 3 so that no obstruction will be offered to the driving gear 4 which partially extends within the housing 2. The upper marginal portions of the housing 1 between the openings 3 and at opposite sides thereof have secured thereto the plates 5. Fixed or otherwise supported by the plates .5 are the bearings 6 with which the shaft 7 is rotatably engaged. The gear 4 is fixed'to thisshaft 7 One end portion of the shaft 7 extends beyond the housing 2 and fixed to the extended portion of the shaft is the pulley 8 which maybe employedshould it be desired to rotate the shaft by power. The pulley 8 also serves as a balance wheel when the shaft 7 is rotated manually through the medium of a crank 9 or the like. ,As herein disclosed the inner end portion of the crank isvfixed to the shaft 7 outwardly of'the pulley 8 and an intermediate portion of the crank is secured to the peripheral portion of the pulley by a pin 10 or its equivalent.

The shaft '14 below the pinion 15 is provided with an outstanding annular flange 16 contacting with the upper end of the sleeve 12 whereby an effective Support for the u(pper end portion of the shaft 14 is obtaine The flange 16 is provided with an oil opening 17 discharging between the periphery of the shaft 14 and the sleeve 12, so that the mountlng of the upper end portion of the shaft may be readily lubricated. Extending with n the housing 3 above but in close proxim ty to the plate or partition 11 is an oiling vent or tube 18 havlng 1ts inner end portion continued at its bottom by an extension trough terminating above an substantially in contact with the flange 16 so that the oil delivered into the tube 18 through the outer end thereof will e received upon the fiange 16 and passed downwardly through the oil openings 17 for a purpose which is believed to be clearly apparent to those sk lled in the art to which my present invention appertains.
Suitably secured at its upper end portion to the under face of the plate or partition 11 and concentric to the depending or lower end portion of the sleeve 12 is a tube or pipe 19 of a length required by the necessity of practice, or of a length to extend below the water level within a well or other source of liquid supply. Extending laterally from the 19 within the housing 3 and disposed on a downward incline is a discharging spout 20. The spout 20 terminates the housing -3 and coacting with the outer orv discharging end of the spout 20 is a flat valve or gate 21 which normally overlies and closes the discharge end of the spout 20 so that the ingress therein of foreign matter is substantially eliminated. The fiat valve or gate assumes its normal or closed position by gravity but is readily raised or moved intoopen osition under the influence of the stream discharging through the spout 20.
C denotes a cylindrical casing having its upper portion 22 preferably in the form of a truncated cone andin communication with said upper portion or top at its axial center is the lower end portion of the tube or pipe 19. The tube or pipe 19 and the upper portion or top 22 of the casing C are suitablv secured or anchored one to the other.
The bottom 23 of the casing C at its axial center is provided with upstanding hollow sleeve 24 in which extends the lower end portion of the shaft 14 and the bottom end of said shaft contacts with an antifriction whereby the shaft 14 is member 25, preferably spherical, and which is positioned within the sleeve 24 and resting directly upon the bottom 23. As is clearl disclosed in the accompanyingldrawings t e shaft 24 extends axially of t e tube or pipe 19 and easing C. At fpredetermined points longitudinally thereo the tube or pipe 19 is intersected by the spider 26 or the like and which serves as an additional support for the shaft 14 and articularly to maintain the same in proper a inement.
Fixed to the shaft 14 andat a distance above the bottom 23 of the casing C is a rotor R of a radius to substantially entirely intersect the casing C. The rotor R is substantially horizontally disposed and includes a hub plate 27 having its peripheral portion defined by a depending annular flange 28. Extending outwardly from the hub disk 27 and the flange 28 are the blades 29 having their outer edges or extremities suitably engaged with their inner walls' of an annular member 30. The hand or pitch of the blades 29 is such to cause Water or other liquid entering within the casing C to be lifted or elevated through the tube or pipe 19 and discharged through the spout 20. It will also. be understood that the size of the stream discharged will depend upon the rate or speed of rotation of the rotor R.
The side wall of thecasing C belowthe rotor R is provided with a plurality of entrance or induction openings 31, equidistantly spaced and preferably four in number. As herein disclosed the openings 31 are rectangular in form and the corresponding vertical margin of each of the openings 31 is defined by an inwardly directed and substantially radially disposed plate or baflie 32 bridging the space between the side walls of the casing and the sleeve 24. These plates or baffles 32 serve to hold the liquid entering the casing 3 against rotary or circular movement so that the functioning of the rotor R is materially facilitated.
In practice the casing C is entirely submerged and is generally positioned in close proximity to the well bottom or other source of water supply and for this reason it is essential that effective means be employed to prevent ingress Within the casing C of sand, gravel, or the like. For-this reason I emp y ings '31 a shield S which is substantially U-shaped in cross section and decreasing in depth throughout its entire length and from the top thereof. The shield S is of a length in excess of the height of the. opening 31 with which it coacts'and is also of a greater width. The side marginal portions of the shield S are provided with the outstanding marginal flanges 33 which contact throughout their length with the outer face of the side walls of the casing C and are also engaged within the holding clips 34 in connection with each of the opena thought to be obvious that a pump con carried by the casing C5 The lowermar 'ginal ortion of the shield S also contacts with t e outer face of the side wall of the casin G. The lower mar 'nal portion of the s ield S is also engage with a clip which further assists in maintaining the shield S in o erative position. In view 0? he foregoing and as illustrated in the accompanying drawings 'it- -is to be noted that the upper ,endportion of each ofthe shields S is open sothat the liquid before entering, within the casing C through the-openings 31, must pass downwardly of the shield and by which arrangementthe possibility of sand, gravel, or the like entering within the casing 'O is sub-' stantially entirely eliminated.
Inclosing the portions of the driving gear 4 is a gear casing 36 of any desired configurationand which'is suitably anchored or secured to the upper end' portion of the housing 3.
From the foregoing description, it is structed in accordance with my invention is particularly-well adapted for use b reason of the convenience and facility wit which it may be assembled and operated and it will also" be obvious that my invention is susceptibleof some change and modification Without departing from the principles and spirit thereof and for this reason I do not wish to be understood aslimiting'jmyself to the precise arrangement and formation of the several parts herein shown in carrying out my invention in practice except as herelnafter claimed.
